Ds has banged his elbow, what to do?

Sounds a bit pathetic actually, but I don't know whether to leave it or not. He fell quite hard and grazed it on Tuesday, cried a bit then was fine. Friday at his grandmas he fell again on the same elbow. He came home from grandmas yesterday, didn't tell me he had fallen again, and then this morning played football and fell again on it. He came home from footie and asked for a plaster, there is a small weepy looking graze that has had the scab off obv this morning, and then a big puffy circle around the graze. Bending and straightening ok, but very sore to touch the red puffy bit and it's hot.
Honestly my gut says its infected, which is causing the swelling and redness/heat and the pain. The actual graze is a pissy little thing that's barely worthy of a plaster.
Do I go to gp in the morning or minor injuries unit? Def not a&e that would be sledgehammer to crack a nut!

warm salt water to draw out any poison, if its not better by morning, then the GP IF it it starting to creep up veins.

I've got an iodine dressing on it at the moment, Im assuming it won't drop off before the morning

Could also be inflammation? Try a cold patch on it and raise it a bit? Do the infection thing as well and if no better by tomorrow, I would go to the docs

If it was me I'ld take him to nearest pharmacy for advice.

nokidshere · 29/07/2012 18:17

if its hot and red around the wound then you need to seek medical advice!

Trouble is I don't know if the swelling is just because he banged it this morning or because it's infected. It's just a very odd place to swell tbh. At first I wondered if he had cracked a bone or something but he's using it ok.

How old is DS? I ask only as iodine dressings not suitable for under 2's.

KissMyEmbroideryHoop · 29/07/2012 18:40

You need to go to out of hours. My DD had a similar thiing and I left it...it went SO bad and was far wrse than it need to have been. Hers was on her hand. It wasreally sore in the end an she had to have antibiotics.

He's 7 and I use the iodine stuff all the time as both kids have complete hysterics if I have to clean cuts and grazes, with the iodine I can get away with a cursory swipe with an antiseptic wipe and smuggle the iodine thing under a normal plaster.
Do you think it needs out of hours gp? I was planning to wait until morning!
