I'm considering using homoeopathy for DD's Molluscum Contagiosum. I am very skeptical but at that point where I'm ready to try something new.

Anyway, I was googling some homoeopaths and I'm curious about something.

A couple of people have background info and state that they trained as 'a nurse/midwife/pharmacist' which to me is reassuring.

None of the relevant registers have their name on it though. Should they still be able to use the letters after their name if they aren't actually a member of the Nursing & Midwifery Council etc?

I may just be over cautious, but using a protected title should only be allowed if they're actually registered shouldn't it?

If you are a homoeopath please tell me to go for it, and that it will work!

Or it could have been the ice.

I have used it on bruise after bruise on my son. Right after he's bruised. Hours after he's bruised. Doesn't matter. Never makes a lick of difference in his bruises.

Of course, he's also so pale as to nearly be transparent, so maybe bruises just show up on him more!

arnica doesn't stand up well in trials

Bigkids - only one of those studies appears to be relevant - and that's comparing 'arnica gel' to 'pain gel' whatever either of them are. Many of them appear to be looking at the homeopathic options (which I am certainly not suggesting)

I can't explain the blackness (bruising) on the one part of my son's bruise that didn't get the arnica cream unless the cream worked.

Rescue remedy has a bit of brandy in it, it's probably that. :o

and the top one, which showed less swelling.

I don't understand what you are saying about that bruise, really. The bruise is from the blood leaking from the burst vessel under the skin. Are you saying where you applied the cream formed some sort of barrier that prevented the blood going into that bit of skin? And the blood collected in the part you had not applied the cream to.

or that the arnica healed the burst vessels?

I suspect it was the ice. Ice quickly on an injury will reduce bruising ad swelling as it causes the blood vessels to shrink, so less blood leaks out in the first place

seeker · 27/07/2012 18:07

Mistlethrush- so you are saying that the arnica penetrated the skin and healed the damaged blood vessels that cause bruising? But only in the specific area where the cream was applied? You're not really saying that, are you? You're saying that the ice reduced the bruising and swelling. Please tell me that's what you a saying!

Tee2072 · 27/07/2012 18:15

Yes, that's what all arnica users claim. Hmm

DowagersHump · 27/07/2012 18:17

Oh dear, I've always thought it was quite good on bruises :o

seeker · 27/07/2012 18:25

A good rub can also ease the pain of a bruise.......

There is actual arnica in arnica cream. It is not homeopathy. So not surprising that it would work.

Sugar tablets called 'Arnica' are homeopathy. You know, the ones you are told to take before a cesarean and all that.

BigFatCushion · 28/07/2012 07:52

I think the part that has killed homeopathy for me is the thought that if water did indeed have a memory, then as others have said, it'd already be done. No water would be pure. We'd all be drinking poison ivy, cider apple and dog wee every time we had a drink anyway.

Nobody's miracle woo-cure anecdotes are ever for anything like broken bones or appendicitis, are they? Despite the miraculous magical nature of woobollocks, it can't actually reattach a severed limb. Though ,funnily enough, proper medicine sometimes can do that.
