Should I take Ds to a&e?

He has been complaining of stomach pains and is lying in bed a bit shivery.

He says he's not cold. His temp is a bit warm but not sky high. He doesn't want the toilet an he doesn't feel sick.

However, he does have ASD and putsan awful lot of non food stuff into his mouth. Last week I caught him licking the soles of his shoes.

I have only this morning discovered that the paint around the door has been nibbled off with paint flakes all over the floor.

What do you think? He is able to talk. Not sleepy. Just miserable and asking me what does he need to get better. I gave him some Calpol. He is 5.

Phone NHS direct?

StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 16:37

They'll say go to A&E. They always say that.

Anyone?

I can't go to A&E for the sake of it. It's my due date. I'm contracting and Ds will want carrying. I'll also have 3yr old in tow!

Have you got a neighbour or someone that can go with you?
If you are in labour you shouldn't be on your own

StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 16:51

I've been in labour on and off for days. I just moved here a few weeks ago so don't know anyone. 2 hours drive from the county I left. Not that I can drive.....

Ds seems to be asleep now. Dd too. Probably that's why I'm contracting.

Is he drinking enough? I'd say if he's hydrated and responsive (sorry, I don't know how ASD would affect this) then I'd probably say keep an eye on him and hold off on A&E for a bit.

Who is with you? What are your plans for labour etc?

StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 16:54

I tried to get some water down him. He had a bit.

On my own. DH at work (1.5 hours away if public transport not affected by celebrations). Doula 2 streets away.

rubyslippers · 04/06/2012 16:55

Call your doula - does she drive?

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 04/06/2012 16:56

Do you have a local out of hours service, that might be easier as they should give you an appointment or potentially come out to you. Does your ds have a high pain threshold? My dd who has asd does so I tend to take her very seriously when she complains of pain.

Hope he is better soon and you as well Sad

StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 16:58

No. She cycles. But I can't afford her for things other than birth. Obviously a life-death situation woukd be different, but a 5yr old with poorly tum!?

I just don't know nough to know how urgent it is.

AmberLeaf · 04/06/2012 16:59

This may sound silly, is there any chance he might be copying your contraction pains?

StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 16:59

Tbh, I don't know as new to the area.

However, will NHS Direct know possibly?

OP posts:
StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 17:00

Doesn't sound silly Amber, but I'm fairly certain he doesn't know about my pains.

Sometimes if you phone a local doctors surgery they automatically divert your call to OOH

StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 17:03

Yes, Ds has a high pain threshold usually.

In the past I've taken him to the GP for something niggling me and been told that h is very poorly Hmm

rubyslippers · 04/06/2012 17:03

I was just thinking she could be an extra pair of hands if you had a pre natal arrangement with her

Northernlurker · 04/06/2012 17:04

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand why you're asking about A&E? What would you expect A&E to be able to do? You can't say that he has ingested something and he isn't drastically unwell. Let him sleep and see how he is when he wakes. I don't see why A&E is required now?

AmberLeaf · 04/06/2012 17:06

Always on a bank holiday eh!

I know my son with ASD would have to be in real pain to complain about it I think I'd get him seen, maybe call OOHs and explain your current labour status and ask for a home visit?

dangerousliaison · 04/06/2012 17:07

i would leave him as he is just now to be honest. He may vomit or have diareah later on, my dd does this with a bug but tends not to vomit untill next day or much later. if he is the same when dh gets home or unwell in the night or morning reasses the situation and take him to GP. But he does not sound ill enough for you to be overly woprried from what you describe.

StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 17:07

Thanks Northern.

I suppose it is because I don't actually KNOW if he is drastically unwell. He can't communicate much and for HIM, he is very poorly.

But I woukd be able to talk to my dd (3) and woukd be unlikely to take her in for imitation symptoms.

He does appear to have eaten a lot of paint though and there are teeth marks all around the door.

I'd just keep an eye for now - seems like you have enough on your plate!

StarlightMaJesty · 04/06/2012 17:13

Thanks dangerous.

I think I'll wait it out and call OzoH if my concerns increase.

How is he Starlight?
