Thursday tea time ds starts with d&v. Not sick very often but each one is a complete emptying of the stomach.

Wakes up at 3am on Friday crying., has vommited in his sleep and seems very unwell.

I rang nhs direct who advised to continue with normal feeds and not withhold at all regardless of vomiting. Gave him his.usual 7 ounces and within 10 minutes it all came up projectile.

Friday morning he is weak but ok. Doesn't cry for food at all so give him usual 7 ounces at about 10am. Again it all comes up within 10 minutes. He then goes floppy, mottled hands and feet, drifting in and out so an ambulance is called. His nn measures at 2.2 so he is treated for that and we're discharged from the ward at tea time.

Saturday he improves. Very lethargic and grouchy but keeping down sips of dioralyte and the occasional teaspoon of banana.

Sunday he won't touch food, very reluctant with dioralyte. Alternates between screaming in pain and sleeping all morning. Got emergency ooh gp app. She agrees he's not right regardless of normal temp and asks ward to see us again.

They say he is fine, it's all normal, he will be up and down, keep doing what we're doing.

This morning not crying so much but has vomited what little dioralyte he's had and is still very listless and pale.

Is this really all normal? It just seems like he's going backwards not forwards. As I said, any advice gratefully received.

Sorry for typos, on phone.

His bm was 2.2. They gave hypostop which worked fine. Yesterday it was 3.1 which I think is too low as did ooh gp but ward doctor said it's fine

that sounds awful - I'd be worried about dehydration and would not at all be happy about the paleness & listlessness. The not crying isn't necessarily a good sign either - he might just be running out of energy altogether. I don't think it would be pfb at all to get him seen again - did the ward give you 24 hr access or something like that?

MyDogShitsShoes · 02/04/2012 11:01

Thank you! Yes they did give us their number both times but when we went back yesterday they were very kind but it just felt like they were humouring me iyswim.

She said it's normal to go up and down and to have pain on and off. She also said the mottling was nothing to worry about as long as it just comes and goes.

I don't know I just don't think it's normal to be getting worse again. He hadn't vomited since Friday but now it's started again.

Don't worry about what you think they might think of you - any doctor worth their salt should be happy to check your little one over. 7 months is so small still and things can change quickly, and nearly 5 days without much fluid intake is a very long time.. he might be needing some IV fluids if he can't keep it down in his tummy. I'd phone and go back... good luck and hope he picks up soon

Thank you. Just given him an ounce of dioralyte so will see what happens with that.

If he brings it up i'm going to call.

honestly if your worried go back, ds1 had d and v at 16 weeks, i was told to syringe 5mls of dirolyte into his mouth every 5 minutes of so, had same advice when he was older too. trust your instincts, they are very rarely wrong.

oricella · 02/04/2012 18:38

How is your wee one doing now? Hope all's well

MyDogShitsShoes · 02/04/2012 23:27

Hi. Ended up ringing the ward, luckily the nurse agreed with me and told us to come in.

His blood sugar had gone down to 2 but the doctor still tried to send us home. Luckily I said I still wasn't happy so they let us stay for a couple of hours to monitor his intake as he projectile vomited everything again an hour later.

Got to stay overnight but he's managing a few ml's every 10 mins now so finger's crossed we're on the right track.

Thank you x

thanks for updating - glad he was kept in, must be good for peace of mind. Hope he'll be better soon

MyDogShitsShoes · 03/04/2012 08:47

Sadly after staying up all night to syringe feed him every 10 minutes he's still exactly the same.

Waiting for the doctor now.

Bless him, not that it makes the whole thing any better but you were right to insist on staying. hope he picks up soon, babies bounce back surprisingly quickly once they get over it. hope someone is looking after you too.

MyDogShitsShoes · 03/04/2012 11:19

Saw a lovely doctor today, totally agreed with everything I said!

Decided we're going to try banana instead of milk and re-assess at 3. Really hoping we can avoid a drip

o good - at least sounds like you've found the right doctor now; not so good he's still not getting better, but he's in the right place now... As dribbleface said, do get someone to look after you too a bit - make sure you get some sleep; do try and get of the ward for a little while to clear your head and have the troops bring you something nice to eat

PoptartPoptart · 03/04/2012 13:16

I had a very similar experience with DS when he was 14 months. In the end they put him on a drip for 24 hours to rehydrate him properly and to give his stomach a rest. I know the thought of a drip is a bit scary, but it really helped him get better. Hope your LO recovers soon

duchesse · 03/04/2012 13:19

Any baby under 12 mo with D&V should be seen by a doctor, as many times as it takes to get them well again. If he seems listless and potentially dehydrated (sunken fontanelle? not peeing much?) he should definitely be seen.

No idea why that posted again Blush

He's kept the banana down but still very tired and listless. His bm is still 2 and his temp has dropped to 35.4.

Reviewing again later on.

I am so sorry you are still going through this. Your poor ds. I hope you managed to get some sleep last night. Let us know how things go.

wigglesrock · 03/04/2012 14:46

Hope he's soon on the mend, my dd2 when she was about 13 months had a very similar sounding thing. Tbh the GP sent me down to childrens A&E right away where she was put on a drip (at the time the best thing for her), we were kept in overnight and she was much better the next day, but the drip being kept in for the guts of 24 hours really made the difference.

MyDogShitsShoes · 03/04/2012 15:04

Thank you.

It's so horrible seeing him like this, he's just so weak. Put him in the cot for a proper sleep as he's been syringe fed every 10 mins for 24 hours and he's just lying there silent with his eyes wide open.

OP posts:
oricella · 05/04/2012 20:29

hey, how's he doing now? Hope things have improved since the last update

MyDogShitsShoes · 05/04/2012 23:25

He's home!

Lovely doctor's banana idea worked! Slowly but surely he started picking up.

He's still very weak and has lost a shed-load of weight (luckily he was a chunky.monkey to start with) but definitely going in the right direction now. He's taking a couple of teaspoons of mashed banana every half hour plus sips of water.

Doesn't seem like much for a blw baby who usually has 3 decent meals a day plus 4 full bottles but it's a start!

Bloody hell it was scary for a while there!

Thank you so much for asking, it's really thoughtful of you Thanks
