Anyones dc had this awful, lingering cough that keeps making them be sick ??

Dd (12) had it first, and it lasted about 2 weeks and then ds (9) started with a very very croupy cough. After about a week the cough turned more chesty and i took him to the gp. They checked his chest and said it was clear, but because he was struggling they gave him an inhaler.

A week on, and his cough is still here, and he is coughing up so much phlegm that it gets stuck in his throat and he really struggles to breathe. Then he vomits up all of whatever he ate last.

He's just eaten his dinner, had a coughing fit, really panicked because he felt he couldn't breathe and all of his dinner has come back up Sad

His seems to be lasting longer than dd's and I was wondering iof anyone else has had this ??

Yes, DS (3.5) has had it for 2 weeks now. He has a tendency to throw up when he gets a bad cough anyway, but this virus has been particularly bad for it. Now DD (6 months) has it too.

Don't know what it is, but it's nasty and very tenacious.

LineRunner · 01/02/2012 19:41

Yes, DS had it before Xmas.

GP recommended two weeks on an inhaler (the blue one) to restore his airways to normal, and it worked a treat.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 01/02/2012 21:00

Thank you both. I was starting to think there was something seriously wrong with him, so i'm relieved to hear some other children have had it too.

He has been using the blue inhaler for a week now, so hopefully in might start to clear soon.

Could it be Whooping Cough?

LineRunner · 02/02/2012 21:00

Any improvement today, OP?

My DS had to use his inhaler this morning, but was fine this evening even after sport and a cold walk home. He's tucked up under a duvet now!

If it is whooping cough- and you don't necessarily "whoop", it can go on for ages. You don'tnwant to know this, but the Chinese call it The Hundred Day cough.

The only thing that eased it when we had it was sipping iced water, or sucking ice cubes. It goes away in the end, I promise.

There is a cough going around it is pretty bad and my GP has said expect it to last 6-8 weeks, My DC seem to have it easy and recovered pretty quickly I and DD1 are week 3 in and still vomiting with the cough it is mainly phlegm. I have taken to drinking hot red lemonade first thing in the morning as it makes me vomit up what is in my stomach, Gaviscon helps and taking an antihistamine to prevent the nasal drip as well as the inhaler, avoid dairy if possible.
If I were you I would check with the GP if any of the above could be used on your DC -The red lemonade would works if he feels queasy and needs/will vomit DD gets relief with this and the antihistamine might keep his stomach clear

TheOriginalNutcracker · 03/02/2012 09:39

I never even thought of whooping cough. Will have a look at the link in a mo, but i don't think it is that. I had it as a child, so will check with my mum too.

The cough isn't really any better yet but I have managed to get him to control his breathing a bit more. He tends to start coughing and then hold his breathe to stop the cough, which just makes it worse. I have said if iu need to cough then cough, and then breathe slowly in and out. So far this has worked in terms of stopping the vomitting. His inhaler is helping too.

Yep dd has this right now.

seeker · 03/02/2012 09:54

we diagnosed ourselves using this website

oenophilia · 03/02/2012 10:14

ha! I have had this recently - coughing until I was sick, unable to breathe properly and it suddenly improved after a friend suggested taking Manuka honey. I've either been eating it off a spoon or stirring it into hot water in a mug. I know it's really expensive & I don't normally give any credence to this sort of thing, but it definitely worked for me. There was an article in yesterday's Telegraph about it working on wound management as well - haven't had to try that yet!

TheOriginalNutcracker · 03/02/2012 14:54

Shock the video on that website of the 6yr old coughing is ds exactly ! The coughing, the red in the face, the sound when he tried to breathe.

Do I have to take him to the gp or is it likely to clear on it's own ??

Ds has had a cough for the last 3 and a bit weeks, no other symptoms though. Went to the pharmacist after 2 weeks then the GP after 3 weeks. Listened to his chest, said he "heard something" on one side so gave antibiotics. Ever since then he's gone downhill! Temperature, off school, headache, no food etc. Confused

seeker · 03/02/2012 15:02

We didn't bother with the doctor- the website said that that there's no effective treatment- you just have to wait til it goes away. Which it did- eventually. Dd is still called "the strawberry" sometimes- she's got loads of freckles and when she went red in the face the resemblance was irresistible!

If yours is littler though, I would go to the gp and see what he says. I'm not sure we were right not to- but we're not very doctor oriented people.

Remember the iced water. Ice lollies helped too.

dikkertjedap · 03/02/2012 17:12

If your GP suspects whooping cough, (s)he has to notify the Health Protection Agency as they measure the prevalence of whooping cough. Nothing can be done, but it can be very very dangerous in under six month olds. So stay away from very little ones. There seems to be a lot of whooping cough around. Don't know why, maybe less people vaccinate their children? Also, the protection given by the vaccine wears off over time and is almost non-existent for teenagers (and anyone older). You can get a booster though but need to have it privately as it is not available on the NHS.

angelinterceptor · 03/02/2012 17:18

My DS has had this from Boxing Day. Eventually saw the GP about 10 days ago and he said nothing he can do about it.

DS is 12 and gets really distressed with it. It's worse in the mornings and evenings but seems to clear up during the day at school.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 03/02/2012 17:43

Thank's all. D is 9 and we don't know anyone with a baby so I don't think i will go to the gp unless it gets worse.

He is absolutly fine between coughing fits, but gets very distressed when it does start up. I spoke to my mum and she said it does sound like when I had, but I was only 1 so it was more dangerous.

Can adults get whooping cough?

seeker · 03/02/2012 18:15

Dp and I did. So did dd, who was 10. Ds didn't- he was 5 and therefore nearer to his vaccinations.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 03/02/2012 18:52

I think ds may have caught it off dd2, but i didn't realise that this is what it was when she had it.

I now have an annoying tickly cough Hmm fingers crossed it is not that.

OP posts:
FullBeam · 03/02/2012 19:10

My dd also has a horrible cough but I thought she had been vaccinated against whooping cough. Do you know if you can still catch it if you have had the vaccine?
