6 yo dd feeling dizzy at bedtime - any ideas?

My normally healthy 6yo dd has recently started complaining of feeling dizzy when she goes to bed. Tonight she got very upset and described it as feeling like her 'brain was spinning round her head'.

She is absolutely fine during the day and has gone to sleep ok now, but am a bit concerned as to what could be causing her to feel like this. Will try the gp's tomorrow, but has anyone had experience of this? Thanks.

Anyone?

Problem with sinuses which drain into ear and affect the equilibrian when she's laid down?

But I'm no expert

uphillbothways · 05/01/2012 22:05

Could be low blood sugar?

The spinning feeling sounds like what you feel before you faint. Try head between the knees or lying down with legs elevated if she feels it again.

Doctors is a good idea if there's no clear reason for why it's happening. Best of luck, hope it gets sorted soon :)

If the dizziness is triggered by lying down it sounds like it may be an inner ear problem.
Worth checking with the GP

Thanks all - will definitely try and get her in to the doctors tomorrow.

So she's been checked up at the docs and he can't find anything obvious. No ear problems, chest and throat all clear, stomach fine and no eye concerns.

Will have a think about the blood sugar comment uphillbothways and maybe give her a snack after tea closer to bedtime to see if that helps tonight.

Any other ideas greatly appreciated...? Grin

Hmm. Is she battling a cold or anything? That can make you get a sort of "cloudy" disorientating headache which you don't notice when you're up and about and doing stuff, but then it gets to you when you're lying down with nothing to occupy yourself with. Probably related to sinuses but also just because you're feeling rotten.

Also make sure she's not dehydrated, though obviously not too much liquid close to bedtime or she'll be running to the loo all night!

detoxdiva · 06/01/2012 16:39

Thanks for that - I do battle to get get to drink through the day although she loves her milk at bedtime. Have given her a snack on the way home from school today and a glass of water when we got in. She's now watching a film and has just complained of the dizziness again. I really don't know what to think. Will keep a diary I think over the next week or so and maybe revisit the docs if things don't improve.

I can get a sudden wave of dizziness when I'm very tired - over the years I've learnt that its my signal to go to bed!Could it be as simple as that?(given that the dr has checked her)

I reckon a diary and repeat visit to dr's can't hurt though if it carries on.

My daughter has the same symptoms so I googled it and came across your thread. Is your daughter better now-I hope :) did you find out what was wrong?

Lorrainesap · 12/12/2018 02:37

My 6 year old daughter is going through the exact same thing! Been going on for about 9 months! We’ve gone to the doc about it on several occasions but no answers. What did you all find out? Any tips you’ve learned will be helpful!

JessStrike · 17/12/2019 21:00

@ Lorrainesap: Hi, Did you ever find out what is going on with your daughter and does it still occur? My Daughter is experiencing same thing and has for over a year now. Would love to discuss your outcome. Thank you!

Keri40 · 08/03/2020 18:53

@JessStrike

I would be willing to chat about it. I just received a report from Boston Medical, as my daughter has been experiencing the same issues without any positive testing.... let me know!

Lycemail · 13/03/2020 16:01

Hi,
Anyone any updates on what the solution was?
Thanks

Realitea · 14/03/2020 12:34

If it’s only at night I wouldn’t think it could be an inner ear problem.
Low blood pressure could be causing it, it can drop a lot after a hot bath.
Or blood sugar
Or just tiredness... I get dizzy when I’m tired

Breanna555 · 16/05/2020 05:16

Hi
My daughter is having the same problems. She is 9 years old. I'm wondering if it isn't physical could it be mental ? Like anxiety? I'm making an appointment in the morning to see a doctor. She's only had this happen a few times. However, those few times have scared me. Hope you all have found answers or it went away.

Lively00 · 30/09/2020 16:57

My son 9yrs old has been complaining of dizziness even when laying down, nausea.
Took him to the doc and they ran blood tests-nothing. I thought maybe gluten allergy but the symptoms happen even after no gluten. Has anyone had any luck on their end???

CMD23 · 30/10/2020 05:51

My daughter's going through the same. She says it feels like the room is shaking and it's sometimes while watching tv and sometimes at bed or both. Any answers please. I'm worried.

jessstan1 · 30/10/2020 06:56

It does sound like tiredness and possibly low blood sugar. It's a good idea to give her a snack before bed. Does she eat a good dinner with you earlier on?

I'm sure she'll be fine and she is obviously growing. Let us know how she gets on.

CMD23 · 30/10/2020 13:51

Thank you! I was thinking possibly tiredness. She's saying when I ask her she's not very sleepy but obviously in the evening and at night she is. She's done it once or twice during the morning so I'm not sure about that. She gets plenty of sleep, but I homeschool so we're on a looser schedule and my kids bedtimes have always been later than most other kids, but they also sleep later in the morning. I'm gonna try to keep them on a more tight sleep schedule and see if it makes a difference.

CMD23 · 30/10/2020 13:53

Also she snacked last night right before bed but it was only pretzels. The other times I can't recall if she had eaten around the time it happened.

jessstan1 · 30/10/2020 16:38

I used to eat cereal or toast with marmalade or marmite before bed, with some milk.

Hokulani · 05/01/2021 03:24

Hi! My son has daily dizzy spells lasting a few seconds when watching tv and going to bed. We are doing an EEG soon, but I was wondering what the outcome was for your child.

Kazme · 20/02/2021 10:38

Have you heard back the result?

Hokulani · 20/02/2021 21:07

Yes. My son had an EEG and an MRI. The EEG was abnormal for Benign Epilepsy of Childhood with central temporal spikes, but he does not have seizures. Our neurologist said that some children have this abnormal EEG but don’t have seizures. The MRI was normal thank God. They don’t know what is causing the dizziness and our neurologist said that it’s not caused by seizures. My son also has had two occasions of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome. He has seen things bigger, smaller, and farther away than they actually are. This happened a year ago and again six months ago. I’m thinking maybe he’s experiencing a migraine variant bc migraines run in our family. I’m so relieved, though, that there is nothing seriously wrong. He’s also had his eyes checked and everything was fine.
