9 mo has had awful nappy rash following a virus 4 weeks ago that resulted in a (we we think temporary lactose intolerance)...sorry if tmi but stools have gone from water to 'mushy' and he has been on the LF formula for a week now. The nappy rash at its worst was weeping and bleeding, we suspected fungal infection so the gp prescribes 'nystaform' which eased the worst but it was still periodically red and angry after a week. She then gave us clotrimazole (x3 daily) and eumovate (x2 daily). It looked brilliant at weekend but today we have gone backwards and its very sore and red again. (He is teething btw) I'm at a loss and hate seeing my baby like this. So what now? Food eliminate? Different cream? One of the 'cures' I see online....HEEEELP!

Don't know if you've tried it but a friend swears by Metanium. You can get it in the supermarket/chemist. It's bright yellow and stains everything it touches so be careful.

DS never really had nappy rash badly but at its worst this cleared it after a couple of applications. Realise your DS is very sore but didn't want to leave you unanswered. Hope this will bump for more experienced suggestions.

RandomMess · 19/12/2011 21:17

"Sprilon" spray it's designed for bedsores, very thin protective layer which hellps the skin still breath.

Worked after all other failed.

About £8 a tin but we got it on pescription.

ledkr · 19/12/2011 21:18

Try stopping using baby wipes and use water, also i like vaseline to keep the rash protected from the pooh/wee. Also how about the nappies? DD gets sore with huggies,i find asdas own keep her very comfy.

FriedSprout · 19/12/2011 21:18

I swear by Metanium too. You need to put it on very thinly so you can see the texture of the skin through it IYSWIM. Doughnutty is right it stains everything, forever!

thisisyesterday · 19/12/2011 21:18

the best we found was zinc and castor oil.

anything with too many other ingredients (particularly perfumes) really irritated ds1's skin

use it as a barrier too though, put it on at every change, clean nappies v. frequently and also plenty of nappy-off time (for as long as you can bear!)

scentednappyhag · 19/12/2011 21:20

A layer of Vaseline coated with a liberal splodge of palmers bottom butter has done the trick for DD Smile hope you find something that works for you soon!

Tonksforthememories · 19/12/2011 21:24

Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter. About £2.50 a tub and has been fabulous for DS's angry/allergic bum. Metanium was fantastic but also dries the skin out which for DS caused its own set of problems. We also used Huggies Naturals nappies as DS was allergic to whatever they used on the lining in several other brands.

Air time is a great healer too, just use plenty of towels on the carpet!

DarrellRivers · 19/12/2011 21:24

metanium

signet2012 · 19/12/2011 21:25

Zinc and caster or apparently egg whites!

Rikalaily · 19/12/2011 21:30

If it is thrush you need to keep using the cream for a good week after the skin is completely healed or it can come back. If it's not thrush, Metanium and Bepanthen are brilliant, plus lots of bare bum time.

ginmakesitallok · 19/12/2011 21:32

Best cream we ever found is Conotrane - used for preventing bed sores, and is a miracle cream.

mousysantamouse · 19/12/2011 21:44

dd unfortunately has that a lot.

  • no wipes, they sting horribly, just a flannel with warm water or chamomile tea to clean
  • add a bit of chamomile and or fennel tea to the bathwater
  • nappy change as soon as soiled or wet
  • as much nappy free time as possible
  • a little bit of oil at each nappy change
  • metanium at night (really good stuff, but stains and smells)
bootus · 19/12/2011 21:53

Thankyou so much for your responses. Havent been using wipes since it started, just water/cotton wool and bare bum when possible! Sadly metanium hasnt done the trick either. I will keep using the thrush treatment and ask the dr abou the other mentioned lotions and potions. I have heard of chamomile so I might give that a go. DS1 never suffered with it so I've never had to deal with it previously. Once again thanks.

I used sudocrem at every change and mine never got it. Not sure if it's the done thing nowadays though.

LivingDead · 20/12/2011 03:04

I was going to say metanium, which was miracle cream for us, but see that you have already tried that. I wouldn't recommend waitrose baby butter, it's really heavy and gave mine spots yeuch.

I think it is unusual now frigid, I do remember my sister using talc and/or sudocrem a lot though, maybe the nappies have gotten better, ds2 never gets nappy rash unless he has a stealth poo which goes unnoticed for quite awhile.

Molybdenum · 20/12/2011 03:09

Try Weleda Calendula Nappy cream. It contains zinc, calendula, chamomile and is free from petrochemicals and known irritants.
I'd also suggest going down the food intolerance route. Try cutting out dairy and gluten for four weeks.
Are you already giving her probiotics? If not them get onto them ASAP. A good one is Higher Nature Probio Easy powder - a quarter of a teaspoon in her bottle each day.

howcomes · 20/12/2011 03:26

A friend of mine recommends dissolving a couple of spoons of bicarb of soda into some warm water and sitting baby in it, it's something to do with ph levels. She swears it was the most effective cure for her dd's nappy rash.

IceColdBitchy · 20/12/2011 04:08

Dsis used to get nappy rash from too much fruit intake - particulary oranges. Might be worth considering if you are weaning.

Ds on the other hand developed weaping bleeding nappy rash that funcidal cream, and none of the other creams would deal with. it was only when he got diagnosised with psorisis on his knees and elbows that it was realised that this was the rash in his groin area. It is effectively controlled with hydrocortison cream and whilst he has flare ups they never get to the same state or last long. Just mentioning it as another train of thought if the nothing works result happens, I wish we had figured this out earlier as ds had to suffer months of this before we found the solution.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

miluna · 20/12/2011 05:19

OP If the rash started after a virus and you can't get rid of it by all the usual means then I suggest a course of Lactobacillus acidophilus, available from all good health shops and some chemists and IceColdBitchy, just be aware that hydrocortisone cream thins the skin

miluna · 20/12/2011 05:28

PS - make sure you get the one for babies

Methe · 20/12/2011 05:30

Both of mine have had bad nappy rash when teething, I think it's quite common. The only thing that's ever made a difference is nappy free time. Metanium can work well too but I recon getting a bit of air to it is the key.

MadameCastafiore · 20/12/2011 06:03

Make sure you aren't feeding him weetabix - used to take the skin off of DS's bottom when it came out the other end - lives on the stuff now and doesn't seem to affect him anymore!

PUMBA · 20/12/2011 10:16

i work in a NICU we use cavilon spray to protect the skin and keep going with the anti thrush cream as it is hard to get rid of and you need to keep it up for a good few days after the rash has gone, hope that helps

IceColdBitchy · 20/12/2011 13:03

miluna - thanks for the reminder ds hasn't had a flare up for two years. Wouldn't have even thought about this thread if it wasn't for the recent flare up. The flare ups are control through other means these days. prevention rather then cure iyswim. And also being caught before they get bad helps prevent long treatment. Unfortunately psorisis on your bits is (ds reliably informs me) really horrid. Where as knees and elbows just a minor annoyance - if you can find it under all of the cuts bumps and bruises. naturalbaby · 20/12/2011 13:12

i've got the after effects of too much weetabix last week (red, broken skin)
big brother used to flare up from tomatoes.

thrush cream was the only thing that cleared up serious infected/open skin so if that's not working then i wouldn't have thought any of the other creams will clear it up. calendula and chamomile have worked really well on my babies skin though, but you need to heal the broken skin first.

the pre/probiotics sound like a good idea.
sudocrem needs to be rubbed in to heal the skin - i pat it gently with a finger tip cause rubbing raw skin isn't nice but it's the only way to really get it to heal the skin.
