9 mo has had awful nappy rash following a virus 4 weeks ago that resulted in a (we we think temporary lactose intolerance)...sorry if tmi but stools have gone from water to 'mushy' and he has been on the LF formula for a week now. The nappy rash at its worst was weeping and bleeding, we suspected fungal infection so the gp prescribes 'nystaform' which eased the worst but it was still periodically red and angry after a week. She then gave us clotrimazole (x3 daily) and eumovate (x2 daily). It looked brilliant at weekend but today we have gone backwards and its very sore and red again. (He is teething btw) I'm at a loss and hate seeing my baby like this. So what now? Food eliminate? Different cream? One of the 'cures' I see online....HEEEELP!

Egg white.

I had to take dd2 the ooh dr last night as she was screaming in pain with her latest nappy rash. I've tried everything on this thread and nothing works for her.

I have just picked up a prescription for some antibiotic cream and some conotrane.

Chemist did suggest some laundry crystals, not in water just sprinkled on and left with no nappy on for a while. I didn't want to look stupid so didn't ask wtf laundry crystals are Blush

My ds2's nappy rash only cleared up when I completely cut dairy out of his diet and mine. It wasn't severe until I tried him on cow's milk, whereupon his bum was cracked and bleeding within hours. I am lactose intolerant, and assumed he was, too. He seemed OK with small amounts of low-lactose foods, such as yogurt and hard cheese, but always had nappy rash. It was only when I realised that he was milk-protein intolerant that his nappy rash cleared up completely.

Perhaps your ds is milk protein intolerant? Have you tried a non-dairy formula?

Babay Barrier cream from Neals Yard. Expensive, but only thing that worked on DS's bright red, bumpy and bleeding bum during teething. Claered it in a coupl eof days. Sudacrem has always made it worse, so possible that some of thie things that you are trying might be making it bad again?

Can get from boots, waitrose or online

Eggwhite really works, it worked on ds2 when he was 2 weeks old and had had nappy rash for ten days Sad

Stuff the creams and ointments, egg white forms like an artificial skin to allow the skin underneath to granulate.

You can literally see it happening. Clean with water, bit of salt in the water maybe, and cotton wool, DRY the same way or allow to air, then apply neat egg white with fingers.

Let it dry and it will do the business. This was what worked on a small area that was raw, bleeding, would not heal. It's just like that spray you get to cover wounds that forms an artificial skin surface. But more natural.

God, I hope she didn't mean soda crystals Shock They could give her serious burns, they are very caustic.

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 20/12/2011 14:46

You're thinking of caustic soda, etJeviens. Washing soda is not caustic, and is even used in some food preparation. Pickles, I think, and also it's part of what makes sherbet fizz. I don't know whether I'd put it on the skin neat, though. I'd research that , first. But in solution seems a good idea - it's a water-softener, so might well be soothing for the skin.

I'm going to buy some, myself. Thanks for the reminder on this thread! I have painfully dry, cracking, bleeding, skin in winter, and I had forgotten that a soak in softened water soothes it.

Don't suppose you live near the ocean? Sea water cleared up DDs rash when NOTHING else would.

bootus · 20/12/2011 16:25

thanks again for all your responses. Cant believe how many helpful suggestions there are. Sadly not near the ocean but I will have a look at the things you have all used.

Thanks Prettycandles.

Have you tried diprobase? You can buy a big pot in the chemists for about a tenner I think. My mum uses it on her hands all winter instead of soap, it's the only thing she finds any good.

Her hands used to be dreadful. They are much better now. And you can get it on prescription.

etJeviensEntretesReindeers · 20/12/2011 16:27

Sorry Bootus, crossed posts. I would hold off on any more chemicals or potions andjust go with conservative management, ie the egg white.

See how you go.

Sossiges · 20/12/2011 16:32

100% pure aloe vera gel or as pure as you can find worked for my dd when Metanium/Sudocrem didn't. It's also very soothing.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 20/12/2011 16:45

What sort of nappies are you using? Clotramizol? Anti fungal cream works on DD but I have to use it for a long time. Using reusables has helped a lot but she is still very prone to a sore bum at the slightest sniffle or bit of teething. Oh lots and lots of nappy free time!
