Lulumama · 16/11/2011 17:12

DS has a lump in his neck, Doctor has referred for an ultrasound but fairly sure it is a thyroglossal cyst. it seems surgery is usually recommended due to tendency for infection

anyone with any experience of these cysts and the surgery?

thank you

bump. got so much sympathy as my DD is in hospital at the moment.
surgery is not too bad for that - one of my brothers mates and he recovered within six weeks.

Hi! My dd had a thyroglossal cyst removed at the age of 5. I had noticed it when she was loooking up at something and I could see the bump in her neck, like an adam's apple. Took her to the GP who referred her to a specialist.

The op took about 2.5 hours (longest hours of my life, as they had said it would only be an hour or so) but they got it all out. Operating is recommended as these cysts can grow and get tangled up in blood vessels etc in the neck, and removal gets harder as the child gets older apparently.

DD was fine after the anasthetic, stayed in hosp overnight, and was off school for a week afterwards to avoid any bumps in the playground to her sore neck. The worst bit for her was having the drip taken out of her neck the day after the op - she screamed blue murder at the thought of it but the reality wasn't as bad as she had feared!

Her recovery was swift; she had some discomfort, not pain, for a few days. Now, 3 years later, her scar is still visible but it's a nice neat thin line.

Good luck with your son's op! Ask if you think of anything else :)
hth!

thank you groovyrach and cocktail queen for sharing your stories ! very helpful, indeed. The scan date is 5th December, so not too long to wait at all. It seems as though surgery is a given for this condition..? I shall update as and when and thank you again for sharing Smile

Hi Lulu,

A bit of a cautionary tale for you, my 4 year old developed a lump tucked right under his chin just under 2 weeks ago, his GP thought it was a thyroglossal duct cyst. We have BUPA cover so we saw the first ENT consultant within 2 days who was very concerned (he'd developed a 2nd lump by then), 2 days later he saw a specialist ENT surgeon (on the Friday), who immediately sent him for tests and operated on the Monday. He actually had a horrible infection called Atypical Mycobacterium Cervical Adenitis, nasty, nasty, fairly major op (three hours) and 6 months of antibiotics. The cautionary part of the tale is this - if his lump is getting bigger or indeed if he develops any others, if it looks at all pink or red or any colour change whatsoever you need to move quicker than 5th December. If it is a thyroglossal duct cyst then you are fine but just be mindful it might be other things that originally present like that. FYI my little boys lumps were huge (around 3cm each), he looked like the elephant man and they grew really quickly. Any more questions just shout.

Lulumama · 21/11/2011 12:15

gosh, that must have been terrifying, I hope your little boy is recovering fully .

DS only noticed the lump a few days ago and we took him straight to the docs. she did not seem overly concerned. we do have BUPA but as the scan is within a couple of weeks and no new lumps forming , it's not getting bigger and he's not in pain or struggling with it, i think we'll wait for the NHS scan.

I shall certainly be keeping a very close eye on things, and thank you for sharing,it's always best to know every scenario

Also i just realised your little boys 12, statistically thats probably a little too old for the infection my little man had, of course he's also old enough to communicate with you which helps a lot! Fingers crossed it's all straightforward for you.

Lulumama · 21/11/2011 17:09

thank you , I am amazed that nothing has shown up this far.

GroovyRach · 21/11/2011 20:50

Mine wasent so much a lump, but more a dent in my neck, like it was being pinched from the inside.

I don't know if surgery is a must, but I hated the way my neck looked with it. Always felt when I spoke to people, they looked at it rather than me. I do have a scar and to be honest it's never completely faded and still can flare up quite red at times but I much prefer that than to the 'dent'!

Lulumama · 04/12/2011 10:19

so the scan is tomorrow, which we are all glad about as DS has said it has been uncomfortable on a few occasions, so hopefully tomorrow we will find out of sure what this is and where to go from there

thank you again for the support
