shes was sick at 5pm earlier, then again, then more but just bile which is now green. I know we all bring it up after being sick but this is a odd colour. still bringing it up at 12.15am :(

I wouldn't have worried only I googled!!!!

never crossed my mind the things I read!

my biggest worry is dehydration, I tried to get her to have some sips of water but thats has come back up...green . she hasnt had a wee for a long time

how would I know if she is dehydrated? or do we just go to bed and stop being ott with worry?

thanks

Sounds awful, I'd be worried too. Why don't you call NHS Direct and see what they think?

google is a dangerous thing

how old is DD?

signs of dhydration are different in babies to children but usually 7 hours of sickness is not enough to dehydrate a child but if you are concerned then I agree with swampster about contacting NHS direct

dramatrauma · 31/10/2011 00:48

Yes, she could be dehydrated. Ring NHS direct. And give water. Can she keep it down?

anniebear · 31/10/2011 01:11

yes, I thought 7 hours of sickness was not enough to dehydrate them either . Just she hasnt been for a wee for, well I cant remember

She has learning difficulties so its hard to know how she feels. She has literally been sleeping since she was first sick at 5pm, I shake her a little and can get a nod out of her, but she is so sleepy, but...it is 1am!!!!!!!

its so hard to know when its the middle of the night

gave her a few sips of water before, but ten mins later she brough some green watery bile up. She hasnt had a drink since maybe 4pm

thank you x

she is 10. I suppose having Hydrocephalus doesnt help, its all to do with the fluid around her brain, so she is actually meant to drink more fluids anyway

Lol if I tell NHS that they may have an ambulance at the door !!!(again!!)

Its more likely she has a bug, has been sick , is very sleepy due to being unwell and it being the middle of the night, but....cant help but worry

sorry, was just thinking -does she have a shunt?

anniebear · 31/10/2011 01:16

she was sick a few weeks ago, we had her to A&e then as she was so sleepy we were worried about her shunt blocking (to do with Hydrocephalus) she was ok. But she was only sick 3 times then that was it and although sleepy she drank and had something to eat

OP posts:
anniebear · 31/10/2011 01:17

yes, she has a shunt.

if it were that I would imagine she would maybe carry on being sick, but I dont know as its never blocked up to now

I used to look after a little boy with a shunt -hadn't registered when I first read your post, sorry

I know if he had sickness without a temp that you would associate with a bug, they would be off to A&E so I understand why you are concerned, especially if she can't tell you if she has a headache etc

but there are alot of sickness bugs flying around at the moment

anniebear · 31/10/2011 01:27

yes, its very hard

thank you

hope she is feeling better soon, and you manage to get some sleep

kipperandtiger · 31/10/2011 01:36

Is she keeping any water or fluids down at all?

kipperandtiger · 31/10/2011 01:46

I'd call a doctor rather than NHS Direct, who don't have much specialist knowledge of children with shunts and learning difficulties. If you are worried it would be quite reasonable to bring her to hospital - are you near one with a children's A&E? (which tends not to be busy at this time). Parents are often best judge of their own children. How many times has she vomited in the last 24 hours? - if it's only 3 times and she's sleeping peacefully now it could wait till 7am, but try to bring her in before 8am (which is usually shift change period and may take a little longer - but not that much - to get some help.) If she is sick again, or has been sick more than 5 times, I'd bring her in.

anniebear · 31/10/2011 01:53

she had a few sips of water about an hour ago but then brought up green watery bile not too long after. She last brought up green bile around half an hour ago.

Dont know how much she has been sick, was sick i would say 3 times then retched and brought up bile a further maybe 5/6 times

Hasnt had a wee since maybe 6/7pm

she is flat out on the sofa! Can't believe I am awake!!

kipperandtiger · 31/10/2011 02:16

I'd probably bring her to hospital, either now or at 7am, whichever is easiest for you. They do examine lots of children who are asleep or semiawake, so it's no problem. After all, they'd be taking the history mostly from you. She might not be clinically dehydrated but they might want to rehydrate her with a drip as the hydrocephalus and shunt do not take well to being seriously dehydrated - a child without both would cope better healthwise with dehydration. Also, if there's any chance that this could be due to infection, they would want to treat it sooner rather than later.

It's your call, but my vote is to get her assessed in hospital, sometime in the next 6 or 7 hours. Also, you wouldn't want to be spending the following morning wondering how much worse she's going to get, considering you've already had one night of disturbed sleep.

mrsred · 31/10/2011 02:34

Agree entirely, take her to hospital, I waited for doctors to incorrectly diagnose my little boy at midnight and went off to a&e next morning, wish I'd trusted my instincts and taken him straight there in the first place.

sallysparrow157 · 31/10/2011 03:25

if she is vomiting green stuff she needs to go to hospital straight away, this can be a sign of bowel obstruction so she really does need to be seen to rule out that as well as dehydration. Kids can get very sick very quickly in this kind of situation, I am a paediatric doctor and from what you are telling me, if you were on the phone to me right now asking for advice I would tell you to come straight to hospital.

GothAnneGeddes · 31/10/2011 10:28

Sallysparrow is exactly right. Take her to A&E asap.

swampster · 31/10/2011 12:00

How is she today, anniebear?

kipperandtiger · 31/10/2011 13:07

Hope she is ok, anniebear. Maybe anniebear's absence means they're in hospital.
