Can we start a new asthma support thread now dreaded winter season is looming?

Hi,
I can't seem to find the old support thread. I lurked on it during many long, lonely and frightening nights and admissions with ds over the past year and a half.
My ds is 21 months now, was hospitalized at 8 weeks severe bronchiolitis (really thought he would die) then every 3-4 weeks since whenever he gets a cold. No symptoms in between colds but a wet, crackly chest with some wheeze with every cold. Plus of course the dreaded tracheal tug and sternal recession that heralds an admission.
It is all so bloody draining and heartbreaking!
We are just starting with a new bout today after a whole 8 weeks of being well. I am debating whether to call in sick for my nightshift tonight or leave poor hubby with an inevitable hospital admission AND our 4 year old!
Anyway, would be good to hear from others going through similar so we can all support each other ( or direct me to the original support thread!)

Sirzy fingers crossed that helps x doctors have been round and ds has managed so far 3 hourly so as long as he lasts till 1 we can come home Smile

butterfingerz · 24/09/2012 11:19

We're home, he's on the usual stepdown with pred too. His X-ray was clear, still think its the virus his sister has got. He has a follow up with a consultant as he hasn't seen one regarding his asthma yet, only GP. He's very tired and all the meds (most of them had to be given by force) have made him very agitated and angry, poor mite.

And I feel like a bear with a sore head after little sleep. Both A+E and children's ward were very busy so think they were trying to get people shipped out... compared to when we've been in the summer... must be lots of illness going round.

Wishing everyone a peaceful, A+E free week! Xx

Sirzy · 24/09/2012 12:15

Glad your home. Hopefully being under consultat care will help, our GP is awful with DS but his consultant is fantastic!

alibobins · 24/09/2012 13:46

We're home too snuggly but much better x x shame I'm back at hospital later with dd oh well time for a cup of tea and shower before round 2 x x

cedmonds · 24/09/2012 14:34

Hi
Ds is doing ok on the 10 puffs four hourly. His peak flow is still low though so we are of to the GP later on. Hope we dont get sent to the hospital.
Glad everyone is back at home.
Sirzy hope that keep ds under control and you manage to stay at home now.

hellbell · 24/09/2012 18:27

Hello everyone. It has been busy here! Well, I hope that everyone who is home stays that way and those not get there soon. Ds has another hacking cough and we've been up in the night again. Peak flow reduced, but it isn't yet wheezy. Dreading tonight as we live an hour away from a and e and it is pelting down out there. Might see you later.Sad

Sirzy · 24/09/2012 19:05

Glad your home Ali, hope DD got on ok

Cedmonds, hope you got on ok at the drs.

Oh no hellbell hope you don't need to get to hospital. We only live 6 miles from our hospital and I am concerned enough as the roads to the hospital are flooded. Fingers crossed for a peaceful night all round!

alibobins · 24/09/2012 19:34

Ds2 has been fast asleep since 5 and seems really settled. Dd got on fine however she is back tomorrow for her chemo (she's got an autoimmune illness)

Hells hope u manage to stay away from the hospital that is quite a drive :(

Cedmonds hope the gp hasn't sent you back in :(

Sirzy how is ds coping x x

Sirzy · 25/09/2012 17:22

DS is still plodding on, as long as he has his ventolin he is fine which will do for me!

How is everyone today? Hope the damp weather isn't causing to many problems x

cedmonds · 25/09/2012 20:05

We are back inSad hopefully we can go home tomorrow. Ds stats are dropping at night and he is tugging and his lips went slightly blue.[blue]The ward is full of coughing children and lots of babies with bronchiolitis(Sp)Sad
Its strange how it has got bad all of the sudden.
Hope everyone else is ok and everyone stays out of hospital.

sittinginthesun · 25/09/2012 20:13

Sending you all warm and healing vibes.

DS has never been too poorly, but he was very tired, coughy and wheezy last week. Thankfully, I think we seem to have DS2 under control, doubling his preventers and using his reliever. His colour is back to normal now.

Think it must be the weather changing all of a sudden.

Sirzy · 25/09/2012 20:30

Oh no Cedmonds. Our kids ward is full of the same its Bronchi season now.

sittinginthesun - glad he is better now

alibobins · 26/09/2012 18:06

How's everyone doing? We've finished the pred and the wheeze has gone but ds is still left with a hacking cough Sad he looks terrible with pale skin and dark shadows round his eyes.
Cedmonds how's old is your ds? Ds1 is 7 and we don't monitor his peak flow just wondered if it's worth mentioning at our consultants appointment next week x x

Sirzy · 26/09/2012 18:09

Ds is better but also has a hacking cough which is unusual for him. Managed a morning at nursery today and other than being knackered seems ok.

lollipoppi · 26/09/2012 19:21

Hi all
DS is a little under the weather, he has been "off" for a few days now, hoping to keep it controlled at home as it's only been just over a week since his last admission.

I notice some of you mention your DC's O2 saturations, is there a little machine I can buy from a chemist or somewhere?
When he is really poorly his O2 sats are down to mid 80's by the time we take him into hosp so it would be good to have one at home x

cedmonds · 26/09/2012 19:53

Hi we are still in he id doing better but his stats keep dropping.
Ali he is just 6 but it took him awhile to get use to do it. .It does help a bit though. He alsohad the lung fuctiontests done for the first time last month aswell.
Lolli We got a stats montor from the hospital as he has home nebs and his can drop with out looking ill if that makessense wedidhaveonethat wegot online but it wasnt very good.

alibobins · 26/09/2012 20:32

Ds1 has managed to do the lung function test so will definately ask about peak flow as I think it would be really helpful. We have also got a home nebuliser and a supply of emergancy pred. He is complaining of feeling tight tonight it's like going round in circles between the two of them.

I have got a sats monitor for my own peace of mind but the consultant is not too happy with relying on it as some children are really sick before their sats drop.

butterfingerz · 26/09/2012 22:26

My DS is much better but still has a chesty cough and has had lots of green gunk coming out of his nose today! He wont take his pred, his gag reflex is so strong, it really is impossible.

Quite a few kids in my DDs reception class have been off with the same thing apparently. I even overheard another mum talking about her own O2 sats were low.

I bought some kids vitamins to try and boost them up again... not sure if it makes any difference but I'll try anything. It's so stressful when your kids are ill, my brain turns to mush, I can't focus on anything else.

Sirzy · 26/09/2012 22:29

Have you tried mixing the pred with a small amount of blackcurrant juice? It's the only way to get it into Ds

butterfingerz · 26/09/2012 22:56

I will try it, its hard as when he's ill he tends to point blank refuse anything other than breastmilk (he's 16 months)... not water, juice, food, nothing. And dont get me started on giving him his inhalers. Tis very stressful!

Sirzy · 26/09/2012 22:57

It's horrible isn't it? But he will get used to it. DS is nearly 3 and rarely fights his inhalers now and will tell me when he needs ventolin.

alibobins · 27/09/2012 07:41

Ds1 is really tight this morning Sad gave him 10 puffs and see how he goes x

cedmonds · 27/09/2012 18:35

we are homeSmile
Hope DS1 is ok alli and you have said at home.

Sirzy · 27/09/2012 19:39

Hope your DS is ok Ali.

Glad your home cedmonds

How is everyone else today?

alibobins · 27/09/2012 20:14

We are still home ds1 is older and seems to cope better than ds2. He is now on more pred and antibiotics. He usually has Azithromycin throughout winter until easter so the consultant will probably put him back on that.
Glad you are home cedmonds x
