Thanks for the bumps, I have always believd that you may be able to take you kids to swimming lessons, it doesn't make them drown proof, this article then made me realise how little I know as a parent and adult about drowning.

so chilling. I remember watching a lifeguard spring around the pool I was in and jump in behind me to fish out my little girl who had sunk under the water maybe two metres behind me. I'd only had my eye off her for few seconds. she didn't make a sound until she was brought up.

Swimming lessons may not make children drown-proof, but competent swimmers are far less likely to drown in the scenario described than weak or non-swimmers, IMO

Interesting article and really worth reading. But for me the moral of the story is to get your children taught to swim and swim properly.

Quattro, I totally agree, but was surprised that I was so busy teaching them to swim, I never educated myself about drowning.

Thanks this is very alarming but so informative, i certainly wasnt aware of this response.

It does explain how children can drown in a swimming pool with people all around and lifeguards all around - they are just very quiet!
