I can remember over 30 years ago a teenager drowned in our local outdoor swimming pool. He drowned in the 2ft part of the pool. At the time I found it very hard to believe - I could swim quite well, and couldn't understand how anyone could drown, and not be seen getting into difficulties.

Thank you for this. Read, marked, learned and inwardly digested.

Bumping this up again.I am a qualified life saver and I assist as a voluntary parent helper in school swimming lessons, and my prime job is to ensure that no child goes unnoticed and starts to get in trouble whilst the rest of the class are doing their lesson. We were also taught about the "silent sink" as it was called.

I thought it would be a good ides to bring this to peoples attention with the spell of hot weather.....

I witnessed an adult get into difficulty today and dh was ready to jump in but he was ok.

Things like this really scare me. I'm ignorant when it comes to swimming because I can barely swim myself. When a child is in a pool and they can swim why would they get into difficulty? What causes this to happen?

I had a near miss when I was young, I was ok , but so, so scary.

Well done for reminding people.

This reminds me of our first holiday with my 3 year old. His dad & brother were in the pool, & he went running into the pool, and literally started doing all the things they have explained in the article. His dad didn't even notice he was drowning, luckily I spotted him, and wasn't far from the pool. We were also lucky we were in the quieter end of the pool. Scary though.

SilkySmith · 28/07/2012 22:27

i've seen it before, but it's worth a bump!

BonnieBumble my friend almost drowned as a ten year old. He could swim, but was paddling about at the edge of a millpond (I know, couldn't be more dangerous water than a millpond!) with his friends and he said he just lost his footing as he stepped off the underwater ledge and went down so quickly that water filled his lungs he was in disbelief, but then felt calm and gave into it, didn't fight it, didn't struggle physically, just kept sinking down. His friend pulled him and he was ok.
