Baltic Amber Teething necklace - any good?

Does anyone have experience with baltic amber teething necklace/anklets? Do you rate them and where is the best place to buy them?

Also, fancy the anklet as would prefer it not to be so visible. Are they are good as the necklaces?

I recommend them 100%! my DS has worn his since 5mo when he struggled cutting his first tooth. He's now 14mo, has 13 teeth and has never struggled since, including cutting all 4 molars together. Some people like the anklets to put on at night rather than the baby sleeping in a necklace, but I just wrap his necklace round his ankle. I've recommended them to about 6 friends now who also report much more settled babies!
Tip: if the child starts to struggle with teething, warm the necklace up on a radiator.

No I think they're supposed to give off some magic energy field or something aren't they?

they are anaelsagic (sorry, hopeless speller). ie they have healing properties within that are absorbed by the skin. Hence you have to wear them next to skin to get any effect from them.

i have friends who swear by them. have a cute necklace for dd which she wears when i remember!

So how does that work then? What analgesic properties does amber have and why doesn't everyone with chronic pain condition wear amber bracelets?

Mmm. Now I've read a bit about them and am even more sceptical. Firstly, since succinic acid (the so-called active ingredient in amber) has a melting point of 185 degrees C I can't see how a baby's body heat or a radiator could possibly release any of it. Secondly, even if it did, why is it a good idea to have uncontrolled amounts of any drug entering your baby's bloodstream? Apparently the acid is corrosive and combustible, so would probably cause quite a lot of damage to the skin. Why not go for a known dosage of paracetamol? Thirdly, if succinic acid is such a good analgesic, why aren't there lots of pain relievers on the market containing it?

Well skeptics, say what you want, but my DS doesn't know about the placebo effect and is a happy, toothy toddler. Sure he might not have suffered with his teeth anyway, but for £14 isn't it worth a try?
That whole copper bracelet thing seems like bunkum to some, but people swear by them too...

Just don't like the idea of a necklace on a baby more than anything. Also don't see how it can possibly work.

All my three have amber necklaces. All three of them have cut teeth fairly painlessly.

Sceptics will say that it's nowt but woo, but i think they work, and really for only a few quid each theres no real harm if they are woo.

I used one for ds1 as he started to become symptomatic of teething- red cheeks, dribbly and grizzly and I was recomended the amber by a french friend and he never again had problems with his teeth! Honestly!!

Dh was very sceptical but having seen the results he now is convinced too.

My 12 week old ds2 is wearing necklace now. So I think it is worth trying

No, but you know he has a necklace on, so you are more likely to dismiss possible teething symptoms as something else - or perhaps when children don't have a necklace on, people are more likely to interpret normal baby whinging as teething.. Neither of my children ever suffered noticeably from teething and neither of them every wore an amber necklace. So I could argue that not wearing an amber necklace stops teething pain .

Sorry, so these things are supposed to release oil/acid into your baby's bloodstream? Are they safe? Have they been properly tested for use in babies?

Analgesic means pain relieving not that 'they have healing properties that pass through skin'.

Actually its scientifically proven. :) Amber contain succinic acid. I reccomend that you do try it if you have chronic pain and it also has a calming effect so is very helpful for children with ASD and ADHD.

Maybe reading this will help ease any worrys you may have about using it with babies or children.

The biggest problem that you can have is people selling fake amber or reconstituted amber.

This lady on ebay has genuine ones, I have one from her and I checked it.

If they had been wearing a necklace, I would have had to invent a new reason.

LOL!!! You might have found the solution to the real problem then!!! Amber does help with more than just teething :)

KickArseQueen, those links take us to sites selling amber products. Funnily enough, they all promote amber.

The scientific studies they link too are not investigating the analgesic effects of succinic acid nor suggesting that it can be extracted by body heat from solid amber. There is no peer reviewed double-blind large scale study available on the benefits of amber teething necklaces nor the mechanism by which they work.

"Nobody ever agrees"...There is no argument to do to death. There is no argument. It's clearly rubbish and it's just annoying to me that people give these charlatans money.

Even if amber does contain a substance that, when extracted, has some pharmaceutical applications (and they mostly seem to be about heart disease, though I'm not going to waste any more time on it), it's not going to be transmitted from a lump of rock into a baby's bloodstream. And if it were, it would be potentially very dangerous. And it could also be used for all pain relief in hospitals for example.

Also, ShrinkingNora, what other mechanism for the pain relieving qualities of amber do you believe in, then, if not in the succinic acid theory which is the one touted by the numerous amber selling websites? They also make it sound as if pure Baltic amber is something special when in fact it's just cheaply and widely available there. Grr.
