Ds coughing himself sick, what can I give him?

for the third time this week ds has just coughed himself sick, he coughs all night too, I've been giving him honey, lemon and glycerine then buttercup, am I missing something or doing something wrong, when he is sick it's mostly the mucus from his throat and the coughing all but stops for a while!

He is 6 btw, dd also has a similar cough but she doesn't do the sick bit!

Thanks.

DD does this, we have tried everything but nothing has seemed to work, we do prop her up a bit higher at night. I have taken he to the Dr's about it as this happens whenever she has a bad cough (not often) but they said there is nothing they can do.

Hope he feels better soon.

amyamyamy · 06/04/2011 18:18

Could it be asthma? Might be worth a GP visit if that bad Poor little mite Sad that must be miserable for him. I also wish him better soon.

clayre · 06/04/2011 18:25

Thanks, I don't think it's asthma as we've had him at the dr about it when he was much younger and they said just to let it run it course.

I have gave him extras pillows for night time to keep him propped up but he just slides down on to the sheet!

My ds had this on and off for months until a doc diagnosed croup, gave him an instant dose of medicine there and then (not sure what) and it has never happened since.

you could try an anti-histamine e.g. piriton and see if that helps dry him up a bit to cut down the coughing. Other than that there isnt much else you can do. My 2 also have a tendency to cough till they puke so I do sympathise!

clayre · 06/04/2011 19:59

Never thought about the piriton, wonder if my bottle is still in date!

Thanks for the sympathy, I'm going to give him till Friday then take him to the Dr!

He is currently jumping about the living room and has hardly coughed since he coughed himself sick at tea time but tomorrow the whole cycle will begin again!

DD is like this at mo with cold. She always gets this with every cold. Luckily she is getting less colds these days. Was at drs yesterday. Nothing they can do :(

tink123 · 06/04/2011 20:17

do you keep ds off school when he has this. DD had four days off last week...

fivegomadinthelambingshed · 06/04/2011 20:23

Tink only of DD has had a really disturbed night. She tends not ot throw up during the day.

clayre · 06/04/2011 20:34

That's why im reluctant to take him to the docs! He is always like this after a cold too but never been this bad, normally when he has sicked up the mucus he's back to normal and that's the end of it.

I don't know if I would keep him off school, it's our school holidays just now!

as other posters have suggested: in small children coughing is the #1 symptom of asthma ..

clayre · 07/04/2011 09:44

I an going to take him to the dr tomorrow to get him checked out, what else should I look out for regarding asthma?

Thanks pixie, you sound like you've been there before!!

The one from that list is the coughing in the night and I think it bothers me more than him!

He's just helped himself to a packet of cookies, he better not cough them back at me, what a waste!

He's never missed any school, he was off the last 3 days of last week as he had sickness and diarrhea that's the first time he's been off unwell since he started!

Dps Dad has asthma but he smokes cigars like there's no tomorrow and also has copd!

Ds had excema as a baby but it went when he was 2 and has never returned, I'm not sure if he has allergies he's had reactions to some fruits where his face goes red and blotchy but that's the only symptom.

Thank you for your advice xx

try vicks vapour rub on the soles of his feet over night.

clayre · 07/04/2011 11:51

My friend does that and she insists you have to put socks on too, Ive always laughed at her but am now seriously considering it!

would second the suggestions to get checked out again for asthma given that there are hints that he might be a bit allergic (infantile eczema, possible reactions to fruit).

Re propping up, many people find it better to actually raise the head of the bed (using e.g. bricks) than adding pillows, which as you've found doesn't work very well as children just tend to slide down.
Good luck
Claire

clayre · 07/04/2011 16:53

Thanks Claire, before starting this thread it hadn't occurred to me that he could have asthma, if he does it will be another thing to add to his list of ailments, yipee!
