Evening, My DD is 3 and is absolutely covered in cp! They started Wed's morning and are still coming out.
She developed a fever last night and didn't sleep very well.

She can't bear anyone to touch her or have clothes on. She won't let me anywhere near her with cream even with me bribing her with chocolate!!!

I'm a bit concerned as they are causing her so much pain tried calpol, ibprofen, camomile, andvirasoothe but nothing seems to help she is also asthmatic and has developed a bit of a cough when lying down.
She is also telling me she has a headache, pox in her mouth and the spots themselves look very angry the is the blister (some have popped) and a large red ring round most of them (about the size of a 50p)

Is this normal? Or should i call shropdoc? Not sure if i'm over-reacting?

Hi, I dont have any personal experience (yet!) of Chicken Pox but just looking on the NHS website (I'm slightly worried DS1 might be starting with it) and it says "Unusual symptoms
You should also contact your GP straight away if you or your child develop any abnormal symptoms, for example:

?if the blisters on the skin become infected

?if you or your child start to experience pain in the chest or difficulty breathing"

Do you think the large red ring around the spots could be an infection?

Al1son · 01/04/2011 23:19

I think I would get medical advice if she is in so much pain. I don't think it's that usual for the spots to hurt or for the child to have a headache.

You can get complications so best to get her checked out I think.

chocolatelover1234 · 01/04/2011 23:20

I'm not sure i looked at that earlier aswell didn't find it that helpful tbh as what do they look like when infected. I mean i know pus is a sign of infection but don't the blisters fill with pus anyway?
They just look so angry and she is so uncomfortable i feel so helpless.
Brathing is ok atm but if i'm up tonight with her i think i'll ring.

I hope ur DS1 doesn't get poorly with them. Lots of children seem to have cp atm.

FWIW I always feel I am over-reacting when I take my DC's to the Dr's!!! But It really is better to be safe than sorry and go with your instinct - my Doc told me the same last week and never to worry about wasting anyone's time!

Hope she feels better soon.

chocolatelover1234 · 01/04/2011 23:25

Thanku she is managing sleep now so i think i'm going to get some sleep too and if we're up in the night i'll call if not first thing in the morning.

Well DD woke at midnight screaming in pain so i rang shropdoc. They rang back and made me feel like i was completely over-reacting and said that she will be fine just put her in the bath and put up with it!!

DD wouldn't settle so we went for a drive which worked she slept managed to get her bk to bed for 1 hr! Then she woke again screaming in pain! saying she felt ill.
She's had a temp all night calpol helps a bit but by 6am it was 39.9.

am i wrong to be concerned and want to get a second opinion?

How is she now?
Ring out of hours if she is that distressed. I had the pox when I was 16 and was in agony, and I was old enough to communicate it.
It's probably just the pox symptoms but it won't hurt to have her looked at.
Hope she is better soon.

littlemisslozza · 02/04/2011 07:19

I'd ring Shropdoc again if she's distressed. I rang them last week when DS2 had chickenpox to check I was doing all I could be doing as he was upset and awake most of the night. They said I was, the only thing I did that you haven't mentioned is giving Piriton syrup for the itching.

Occasionally some children do get very poorly with it so if in doubt do ring them again. DS1 who is 3.6 was also reluctant to have virasoothe put on but it did help to cool the itching so I did it anyway. Both boys had about 3 dreadful nights with hardly any sleep then were so shattered once the itching stopped that they suddenly slept all night again.

Hope she is better soon.

Al1son · 02/04/2011 09:15

If she continues to be in such pain, especially if she still has a headache, and you can't get any joy from Shropdoc I would take her to A&E.

If you are overreacting they will send you home again. If you're not overreacting you could save her from getting very ill.

I've cared for a few children with CP and the main symptom was itching not pain. I don't recall the temp lasting this long either.

Your poor DD. She must feel awful!

chocolatelover1234 · 02/04/2011 16:46

We went to walk in today and saw a nurse who prescribed piriton which is making her so drowsy. Just done her temp and its still up at 39.7 even after calpol.

Think she is so exhausted now. Fingers crossed this will be the last day of bad discomfort but spots are still appearing on her!! A &E will be our next stop if i can't settle her tonight i think.

A friend mentioned medised could help, don't know much about it apart from it being banned here in under 6's as it makes them drowsy but so does priton. has anyone got any experience with it would it help her pain and let her sleep?

OP posts:
Al1son · 02/04/2011 18:36

It's just an antihistamine like Piriton with Paracetamol mixed in so If the Piriton is making her drowsy you probably wouldn't gain anything.

Al1son · 02/04/2011 18:36

Oh and of course she couldn't have the two together.

Al1son · 03/04/2011 16:41

How is she today?

chocolatelover1234 · 04/04/2011 21:00

We ended up in a & e her temp reached 40.3 and she wasn't weeing. But they didn't seem to bothered and just said keep a close eye.
But poor dd has them up her nose, in her ears, and down her throat. She's been a bit happier today still not eating and has a temp, she's exhausted now but think we're over the worst of it.

Al1son · 04/04/2011 22:08

Bless her! She must be sooo uncomfortable! I think you did the right thing by taking her - better safe than sorry with little ones.

I hope she manages to catch up with some sleep tonight and you too.
Fingers crossed for not too many scars.

Have you got bicarb for the bath? It seems to really help the itching.

BadRoly · 04/04/2011 22:12

My ds2 has just got over cp. Like you we were dosing him up with calpol and ibuprofen, also piriton. We used virasoothe on the spots which seemed brilliant. He had 2 or 3 baths a day with lavender, tea tree, tiny bit of milk to mix them and bicarb. His spots started last Saturday and his "poorly" day was Wedsnesday. He is still scabby but back to normal now. xx

HipHopopotomus · 04/04/2011 22:24

Poor thing she has got a nasty dose. She is probably over the worst of it now but my dd also 3 found porridge baths really soothing. I put a cup or so of porridge in a mesh bag, soaked in boiling water and added the lot to bath. Bath water goes really milky and it's very soothing and anti-itch. I also told dd if she itches she wld get more spots - yes it's a big fat lie but it stopped her itching!

chocolatelover1234 · 05/04/2011 10:27

We had a much better night almost feel human again! DD's temp is ok and she's had a bowl of weetabix so i think we're on the road to recovery now.

We've been doing bicarb in the bath but will give the other methods a go too.

Thanks to all for advice and support. :)

aww what a shame, your poor DD, my DS's first day back at nursery was today after a nasty ear infection/virus and as i walked in, there is a sign on the door that they've had a chicken pox outbreak Shock
Hence i came home worrying like an idiot about my DS and being Ill again and because i'm sure as a child i had it, but not bad enough, so im thinking i'm likely to get it again as well!

One stressed out mummy here!!

brookeslay · 05/04/2011 11:41

Poor little one my elder son got it when he was eight and I never had it was so ill as an adult. I saw this in boots http://www.boots.com/en/PoxClin-CoolMousse-100ml_120395/

brookeslay · 05/04/2011 11:42

sorry here

chocolatelover1234 · 05/04/2011 16:25

Oh No sorry to hear about your DS it's horrible when they are poorly. Cp certainly seems to be doing the rounds. I hope u will both be ok with any luck your DS won't catch it.

Think I'll try that brokeslay thanx, i've tried virasooth and wasn't that impressed so will give poxclin a go she seems to be more itchy today.

At least DD should never get it again now (I hope)!
