should i go to A+E with DD?

Couple of friends have suggested i go as we have given it long enough and it is not getting better. I am very worried about DD but not sure if i should take her to A+E...

She has been very chesty for a few weeks now, had a course of antibiotics and now today got another course as she is still very chesty.

She started having very loose nappies last tuesday. This has made her bum so so sore, really severe :( It is agony for her, ive been using tepid water and cotton wool, and bepanthen or sudocrem. I have given her lots of time without nappy but it is not helping at all. Every nappy i change is loose. Since yesterday it is just water. She screams and screams, shakes and sweats when i have to clean her, or when she wees/poos.

She is eating and drinking as normal but seems quiet today. She has had 5 watery nappies since 6am.

Today the doctor said she didn't know what was wrong and i should bring her back on wednesday Hmm im in tears here now, i don't know what to do to help DD. The cream doctor gave made it worse, DD screamed, rolled round and round legs shaking in pain, bloody hell it was horrendous. I had to quickly wash it off which was agony for her.

This morning there was blood in her poo too.

Would you take her to A+E? It has been going on since tuesday last week.

yes

i would

Sidge · 21/03/2011 11:50

The antibiotics can cause diarrhoea.

How old is she?

You don't need A&E, but you do need to see a doctor and if the one you saw today was no help then ask to see another one.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/03/2011 11:51

How old is she?

Does she seem dehydrated?

orangehead · 21/03/2011 11:51

Yes I would too

sowhatis · 21/03/2011 11:51

I would. Babies can dehydrate v v quickly.

25goingon95 · 21/03/2011 11:53

she is 14 months old. she had the first lot of antibiotics weeks ago so i dont think its that.

A&E, yes. Pref a paediatric one if there is one near to you.
Or you could phone NHS direct and ask them what they think first - but don't wait until Weds to see the GP again, especially as she has already said she doesn't know what's wrong (and yes, it could be the antiobiotics).

tigana · 21/03/2011 11:54

Poor you.
Have you tried nhs direct? THey have an online symptom checker too, whichcan be helpful Unlike your gp by the sound of things Angry)

GlynisIsFixed · 21/03/2011 11:54

how far is the hospital?

give them a ring, see what they say?

tigana · 21/03/2011 11:54

Def don't wait until wednesday.

25goingon95 · 21/03/2011 11:57

Im worried sick. Thanks guys im taking her as soon as i can get something sorted for DD1 who is at school.

DD is asleep right now, i keep checking on her and she seems ok. Won't disturb her yet as she was in so much pain earlier and we may have a long wait in A+E :(

Will try NHS symptom checker while i wait, thanks.

I went to this same doctor a couple of weeks ago saying DD was still chesty but she had a listen and said "nothing wrong" Hmm

She was the only doctor available this morning so had to take it.

Hospital is 5 mins away.

She has only had 2 sips of water this morning and 5oz milk. She ate her weetabix too.

Let us know how you get on. Hope everything ok

EsioTrot · 21/03/2011 12:00

You can't leave her like that until Wed. I agree that she must be seen by a doctor today. If you can't get an emergency appointment with your own GP then do take her to a & e. In the mean time can you give her some pain relief? Poor little mite and poor you, it must be awful seeing her so sore.

I really hope she's better very quickly.

LessNarkyPuffin · 21/03/2011 12:04

You need a second opinion, and as you can't get another GP it's your only option.

GlynisIsFixed · 21/03/2011 12:08

Hope she gets better soon, good luck OP

25goingon95 · 21/03/2011 12:10

Thanks everyone, will update later.

Im giving her calpol esio.

She has just woken up, am off to pack a bag for her.

am thinking of you - hope you get the answers you need - am pleased you are going to A & E

Theantsgomarching · 21/03/2011 12:17

Awful when baby is sick and doctors aren'thelpful, it is such a worrying time. Hope all goes well

RancerDoo · 21/03/2011 12:20

Hope she's ok and that A&E can reassure you.
For her bottom, I'd strongly recommend metanium. DD had terrible nappies when ill in hospital and the nurses handed me a tube which really helped. In her case it was caused by antibiotics.

Chundle · 21/03/2011 14:07

def get metanium for her bottom - we were given it in Neonatal and it works wonders

EsioTrot · 21/03/2011 19:36

Hope all went well at the hospital today and your DD is feeling much better.

Hulababy · 21/03/2011 19:47

How is she now?

Am36butfeel66 · 21/03/2011 19:50

Hi just read your thread and wanted to write. My dd used to get awful diarrhoea which would burn her bum causing her terrible pain.

What i did for her which always worked was cold egg White. Separate and egg and put the white in the fridge. When changing dd take a clean cotton pad and wipe a layer of egg white on her bum. Do not put the pad back in the egg always use a clean pad so that you keep egg as clean as possible and poo free. Let the egg dry a bit before you put her nappy back on. The coldness of the egg will snooze her fiery bum, and I used to blow on the eggie bum to make my dd laugh to get it to dry quicker.

Egg White is a really old fashioned treatment for sore skin and it works. I work in a hospital and we have used it on my ward too when other creams don't help. Each time you change her just clean her with tepid water, And reapply egg White each time until skin better. The egg puts a layer back to her skin which the diarrhoea has removed.

Antibiotics are renowned for causing diarrhoea, and especially if you need more than one. Try and get her to eat yogurt with the friendly bugs in it as it wil help put good bugs back in her bowel. Antibiotics kill off these good bugs and cause the diarrhoea. Limit fruit and not too much fibre until tummy settles.

Hope hospital went ok

25goingon95 · 22/03/2011 12:36

Hi, thanks for thinking of my DD :)

Well, we were in the hospital from 1pm until 7.30pm. When we got there the traige nurse made me feel stupid. She said "well its just a tummy bug isn't it" and about the cream that made DD's skin worse, "well it will sting, you can't expect it to clear up instantly" Hmm I told her im not using it, that it did more than just sting. The doctors were very understanding and helpful though. They all wanted to see the cream the GP gave us and all said they they wouldn't recommend using a steroid cream on a delicate part of the body especially on babies and children!! Oh but the triage nurse said it is supposed to sting and i shouldn't have washed it off! She obviously didn't know what the cream was even though i gave her the tube and leaflet..

Anyway, i saved a nappy while we were there and they took a swab of her skin and a sample from her nappy. We have to wait for those. They said the diaorreah (sp?) should clear up now as it seems to be viral? Or gastroenteritis. The nappy rash is candidiasis. They agreed it was very bad and not a normal kind of rash, it is ulcerated in places. She has a cream without steroid and some oral drops.

We have used the cream twice up to now and what a difference it has made already!!! Grin

She has also not had a loose nappy for a good few hours now. Im so relieved!

I will get some metanium thanks! And for the egg white tip, never heard of that but will keep it in mind!
