DS is almost 3, always been v. healthy apart from the usual colds, etc.

Nine weeks ago today he started coughing in the night, a bit wet sounding. He had a cold at the time so we weren't too worried.

Cold cleared up, cough didn't, and the coughing fits got worse. For the last 8 weeks he's up at least twice a night, for about half an hour, coughing. Not much wheezing really, but sounds like he can't catch his breath. Sometimes sounds like he is gasping for air. His language is fairly good and he says he is not "sick" or in pain anywhere, "just choking."

He has little coughs during the day, but no half-hour bouts like he does at night.

We have had four GP visits, two trips to the emergency room, x-rays (for pneumonia) and bloodwork. He was given antibiotics for a chest infection at the emergency room but our GP followed up and did not agree with this, so ABs halted after three days.

He is otherwise his typical self in every way (ie. eating, drinking, behaviour, etc.). No fever, vomiting, or any other symptoms of illness.

Most recent GP visit, GP said he'd now be trying a "working diagnosis" of asthma. Gave us two inhalers - one to be used twice a day every day, and one for the "attacks."

DH and I are concerned. We don't know much about asthma (no history in either of our families so not been exposed to it on a personal level), but we hate the idea of giving our toddler steroids if it's not the problem.

GP says if the inhalers help, it is how they will determine that it is asthma, as he is too young for the actual test.

SO, if you've made it this far and have any knowledge of or experience with asthma, does this sound like it? Is there any way to tell other than giving him medication he may or may not need? Any advice appreciated.

I would try not to worry about the inhalers to much, my sister has been on brown inhalers daily for 20 years now with no ill effect, as long as she takes them her asthma is brilliantly controlled.

Ds was diagnosed as asthmatic at 12 months old, but he has quite an extreme history of chest problems and has been in and out of hospital since he was 8 weeks. Since he was started on the brown inhaler the difference was very noticeable, in his case still not perfect but enough for him to go about day to day life without it causing problems. His consultant is still jiggling his doses to get it just right for him. I would rather him need steroid inhaler which is such a low dose than end up in hospital on oral steroids!

I hope your Ds is better soon. I would try to make an appointment with the asthma nurse at your practice to discuss your concerns to put your mind at ease.
