Is this asthma??

DS is almost 3, always been v. healthy apart from the usual colds, etc.

Nine weeks ago today he started coughing in the night, a bit wet sounding. He had a cold at the time so we weren't too worried.

Cold cleared up, cough didn't, and the coughing fits got worse. For the last 8 weeks he's up at least twice a night, for about half an hour, coughing. Not much wheezing really, but sounds like he can't catch his breath. Sometimes sounds like he is gasping for air. His language is fairly good and he says he is not "sick" or in pain anywhere, "just choking."

He has little coughs during the day, but no half-hour bouts like he does at night.

We have had four GP visits, two trips to the emergency room, x-rays (for pneumonia) and bloodwork. He was given antibiotics for a chest infection at the emergency room but our GP followed up and did not agree with this, so ABs halted after three days.

He is otherwise his typical self in every way (ie. eating, drinking, behaviour, etc.). No fever, vomiting, or any other symptoms of illness.

Most recent GP visit, GP said he'd now be trying a "working diagnosis" of asthma. Gave us two inhalers - one to be used twice a day every day, and one for the "attacks."

DH and I are concerned. We don't know much about asthma (no history in either of our families so not been exposed to it on a personal level), but we hate the idea of giving our toddler steroids if it's not the problem.

GP says if the inhalers help, it is how they will determine that it is asthma, as he is too young for the actual test.

SO, if you've made it this far and have any knowledge of or experience with asthma, does this sound like it? Is there any way to tell other than giving him medication he may or may not need? Any advice appreciated.

Yup, it could be viral asthma so may go. If he improves after using the blue inhaler then he obviously needs them.

shesparkles · 01/03/2011 23:18

My ds has mild asthma, and it's my understanding that the blue inhaler will help an asthmatic cough, but won't make any difference to a non asthmatic cough

*disclaimer-not medically qualified in any way!

imnotsureonthisone · 01/03/2011 23:21

Belle, I know nothing about this yet, what is "viral asthma"? I thought asthma was something that you always had if you had it, iykwim?

She, does that mean that if the blue inhaler works in the night to stop the coughing, it's likely that it is asthma? (And therefore if it doesn't, that it's likely to be something else they just haven't figured out yet?)

So much to learn...

yup sounds like asthma

don't be scared of the steroid inhaler
it is better for his lungs to prevent the constant coughing than allow his lungs to be constantly battered by the cough
ds' asthma nurse likened it to a balloon being blown up constantly , it looks all floppy and not as bouncy after

my ds has asthma , now well controlled on steroid inhalers and singulair

your ds may be reacting to house dust mite in his bedroom.
You could try giving the room a thorough dusting with damp cloth and washing his bedding at hot temp. Putting soft toys in freezer for a day. See if that reduces his cough at night

A viral wheeze is caused by a virus and will go on it's own accord in a month or so. Asthma's different, it can vary in severity. There's a child's asthma thread on here somewhere.

Thanks ggirl, I had just read that elsewhere and spent yesterday doing a thorough dusting and washing everything possible in hot water. Then he had a terrible night last night, so I guess no success there. :( Anything else I can do?

Curious as to what singulair is?

We had similar with DD when she was 18m and didn't believe the diagnosis at first. She only needed the blue inhaler at home (although she's had oral steroids for very bad attacks).

TBH she shows barely any signs now (at 4) and doesn't use the inhalers regularly - we just know that if she has a cold/flu/virus/chest infection she may develop asthmatic symptoms and become quite ill. I'm glad our GP spotted it now, although I didn't believe it at the time.

I hope your DS gets better soon.

belledechocchipcookie · 01/03/2011 23:28

Do you have a dog/cat?

Hi birthday girl Pixie.

Sorry I didn't write that very well, we are giving him the inhalers that the GP prescribed, we are just worried about it, and also a bit concerned about the "well, if this works, that must be it" approach - hence my OP. GP said the preventer would take some time to take effect, but didn't really say how long? It's not preventing anything yet, but it's only been a few days.

Is it typical for this to just show up out of the blue when he's almost 3?

Ds was diagnosed at 4. Asthma can start at any age.

imnotsureonthisone · 01/03/2011 23:37

Belle - yes we have a cat. Does the cat affect it? She does not ever go onto the floor of the house where his bedroom is though.

Thanks Pixie. Have raised the head of the bed. Removed the humidifier he always had for previous colds as apparently it's not helpful if it is asthma?

Belle, do you mind if I ask how he was diagnosed?

Pixie I can't really tell with the blue inhaler yet. When he's in the coughing fit at 2:30am, he's not at all receptive to the device ("spacer"?) that we have to put on him, so I don't think our attempts to actually give it to him have been successful yet (3x, all unpleasant). Today we've had a discussion, involving bribery, which I think will make a difference tonight. Will it help right away if he takes it?

OP posts:
imnotsureonthisone · 01/03/2011 23:47

Didn't know that Pixie. Our environment is very dry, would that matter? Humidifying has always helped his colds.

You are so right Pixie, he loves it when DH or I use it. Has agreed today however that he will sing into it Hmm tonight in exchange for his favourite cheese tomorrow.

Will give humidifier another go tonight.

So if it is asthma, does that mean these inhalers we are giving him are 2x/day for the rest of his life?

I will search for the thread.

And thank you again. This is unknown territory for us and it appears we have a lot to learn. The info is very appreciated.
