have I given my baby too much paracetamol?

My DD has been teething for the past couple of days and had a high temperature with snotty cold like symptoms, ive been dosing her up every now and then with calpol and sometimes some ibuprofen.

Today she has no temperature but keeps going through bouts of screaming and is being really clingy. She sort of shudders every now and then and her stomach seems rumbly. She alsolooks paler than normal, not deathly pale but sort of unwell pale.

I'm not sure if im just being paranoid...

You've double dosed her.

You've given her the maximum dosage possible (and 5-10 ml for 1-6 year olds means, preferably, try 5 ml for a 1 year old, 10 ml for a 6 year old).

Then she's had a second dose TWO hours after this, not four hours, which is the minimum interval to leave.

Ring NHS Direct, if they're still going?

Forget it. Just noticed this was last night. If she's fine now, she's fine.

She is clearly ill, ie. not just teething, and she's had too much paracetamol, she definitely get her to the doctor as soon as possible.

Well in the ten minutes since I wrote my last post, she has ate half a cookie let out several large violent farts and is now chasing her cars up and down the hallway! Blush Still taking her the Dr's though!

Missed off my last sentence.

...still taking her the Dr's though. She had two doses in too short a time so I think that was what is playing on my mind so I clearly need it putting to rest.

Yes take her to the GP. I'm sure there are plenty of parents who have done this.

welshdeb · 21/02/2011 16:30

When my ds was approx her age he had a nasty chest infection due to teething. Doctor said it was ok as a one off to give a double dose of calpol to bring down temperature. I havent made a habit if this but i have done it once or twice since ( on separate ocasions) with no I'll effect.

I would think you would be ok as long as she didn't have any more before 4 hours after the second dose.

Obviously take medical advise if you feel any concerns.

belgo · 21/02/2011 16:38

Calpol has a maximum working effect. Giving a double dose will not make it work any better. Calpol is paracetamol and very damaging to the liver even when just a small overdose.

Welshdeb - I would strongly advise to never double the dose of paracetamol, I find that dangerous advice.

And I don't know what you mean about teething causing a chest infection? Teething does not cause a chest infection, but it is possible for them both to occur at the same time.

Just thought I'd let you all know that I took DD to the Dr's and she is fine. Infact just the mere sight of the waiting room perked her up and when we got home she tucked into a large plateful of cottage pie! So she seems to be on the mend. Thank you for the advice.

That's great. Glad you got her checked out.

CharlieBoo · 21/02/2011 20:21

10 mil is fine for that age, it says between 1-2 spoons. Did your mum also give 10 mil? Get her checked out.

CharlieBoo · 21/02/2011 20:23

Just saw your post doh! Glad she is ok
