DD's painful vulva - please help!

DD is now nearly 14 and has always had delicate 'bits'. When she was a toddler she sufferred terribly with nappy rash - even when she was out of nappies - and we thought maybe she was dehydrated and her wee was too acidic, or that she may be allergic to the school loo roll etc etc.

She never uses bath products and I buy her special washing solution instead of soap. She never washes her hair in the bath in case it irritates. We struggle with school uniform as she finds tights itchy so doesn't wear a skirt (all the girls wear trousers from the same shop and they are synthetic)

When she was a baby she occasionally got thrush, so we have tried canasten but it doesn't help. Sudocrem is the only thing that vaguely makes a slight difference.
The thing is, she has never grown out of it and often complains. It seems to have got worse over the past year - not helped by her developing extremely large inner labia - we're talking 10-12 cm here and when you stretch them out they are like pancakes... We have tried every sort of knickers on the planet but she still gets her 'lips in a twist' and this added to the general soreness is a real problem.

I took her to the docs a few weeks ago to have a look , there is no nasty smells, odd discharge or any other sign of infection, and actually no real redness. She (the doc) thought her raging teenage hormones may not be helping (she only just had her first period last month)and that it may settle down. She did mention (in a roundabout way) labioplasty but she certainly wasn't recommending it! That's not the whole issue though.

I am really worried about her pain (ahe takes painkillers nearly every day as it hurts to walk to school) and her future sex life. At least I don;t need to worry about teenage pregnancy - I can;t see her wanting anyone getting anywhere near her......

Anyone had similar problems with a dd or themselves that can offer any advice?

Confused This is a website for parents to get advice and support and is completely anonymous it is not a site for shildren to read. Are you new here or wot???!!!!

controlfreakyhappyandnew · 04/02/2011 18:19

no. not new here and aware this is a website for parents thanks. that doesn't mean your computer savvy teenager mightn't see your post on here. your description was way too graphic ??? Shock for me... and maybe for some other posters too as i don't see you overrun with replies so far...

froot · 04/02/2011 18:24

Thought from your name you were new and how would my dd know my screen name?!! She doesn't use my computer so she wouldn't come across it. I don't mean to offend anyone but when you are looking for a solution to a problem there's no point mincing your words.....

I am thinking that your dd has lichen sclerosis - often mis-diagnosed as thrush or an allergy. Have the inner lips shrunk, by the way?

Please google, don't panic, and arm yourself with some printouts if you think I'm right, then take them to show your GP. INSIST on an appointment with a dermatologist.

It is shameful that GPs do not recognise this disease. It is very debilitating and can lead to worse.

Shame on you, Control Freaky.

Thanks mumsnut my faith in the lovely mumsnet gang is restored. I will certainly google that - funnily enough I have lichen planus in my mouth. No, her labia have not shrunk yet but the GP said they might once her hormones have settled down.

OMG just googled it. We are a bit of an auto-immune family (sarcoidosis and crohns in my close rellys) so that would fit. I don't think she has white spots - do you think it could be this but in the really early stages.

err, i'm not ashamed thanks very much. quite happy to stand by what i wrote. clearly if there is a medical problem then op's dd should get appropriate help. that doesn't make the graphic description any more appropriate.
why shouldn't i be on this thread? what are your special qualifications for being allowed to post on it?

unfitmother · 04/02/2011 18:55

Being supportive, being helpful? Hmm

tempNameChg · 04/02/2011 18:58

Froot
Please don't panic - I had lichen planus, flared up regularly, undiagnosed for ayears till the GP I booked an appt with had to cancel at the last minute and I was sent to the other GP who happens to specialise in dermatology... Previous GP just kept treating thrush, which it wasn't so no wonder did not work. The derm doc gave me some cream call dermovate which fixed it that same day, tho I had to apply it for two weeks. Since then, has recurred once, nine month later - go some more dermovate and was fixed.
Please insist on getting a dermatologist to look at it.
I know how painful it is, but it can be treated. The skin that was previously got hard and itchy softened raidly- I had got used to the pain and itching and should have been more insiten on proper treatment. I can now wear tights an tight trousers - unthinkable before.

ooooh! [don't want to get too invloved]

Just to say that lichen sclerosus and lichen planus are quite different diseases.

Most gynaecology departments, especially in larger cities, will have a specialist vulva clinic, or else you may find a local dermatologist with a special interest in gynae...may be worth seeing one of these just for more advice/peace of mind.

I'm assuming you've thought of the non-bio wash/cotton undies suggestions?

froot · 04/02/2011 19:40

Ok I have written a letter to gp who is very amenable usually - am sure she will arrange referral asap and have health cover for dd through my work so should be able to get her checked pronto . It will be so fab if after years of discomfort this sorts her out . Wish I had posted earlier ..... Thanks for your help guys will post again once seen derm x

hi - vulvodynia ( used to be called vulval vestibulitis) could be another possibility. There will be info about it on the vulval pain soc web site. Poor girl - I hope that you get a diagnosis and some help soon.

froot · 04/02/2011 20:13

It is the inner labia which shrink with LS Froot; the outer labia are the 'pancake' ones - looking bigger because the inner have shrunk / disappeared.

Let us know how it goes, and Good Luck.

froot · 04/02/2011 23:20

No allergies but funny rash on her hands bit eczema -y every winter . Outer labia usual size inners are larger/longer . Have read on net now 15 percent of ls sufferers are kids and can clear up at puberty which we are only just at .
