Was complaining in the morning that his head was hurting but didn't have a fever and was quite lively.

Then I find him in bed, sleeping, 39 degrees, nasty cough.

He's never ever ill, I mean not even a sniffle in the last 5 years. He's almost 9.

DD (23 mo) is always with him, cuddling etc, she'll probably will have caught off him.

It sounds like a (swine) flu, doesn't it?

Do I need to do anything? Gave him some paracetamol and left him in bed. Will be making chicken soup later.

What do I need to watch out for?

If he's sleeping just let him be. The fever won't do him any harm - it will help him fight off whatever it is. If he's uncomfortable he'll wake up. Just keep an eye on him. Hope he feels better soon.

Thanks. Yes, I agree in principle, just worried a bit that he had fever on Sat, almost none yesterday and has one again tonight. Not sure, think I've read that it's not very good if the fever returns after abating Hmm

Or could it be sort of normal with the flu?

Hi winny how is he now?

DD had fever for lot of weekend, yesterday morning, then it disappeared all day, in middle of night it was 39 again. I have more luck keeping the fever down with nurofen than calpol atm.

I am concerned that it might be glandular fever?

DD made a big recovery this morning and so she went late into school

We will see how she is at 3 and ready to keep her home again if she is ill at pick up. Teachers were aware to call us moment she complained.

winnybella · 01/02/2011 14:09

Yes, DS same- fever on Saturday, low fevr on Sunday, high fever yesterday, low fever today (for now). Still coughing, but relatively chirpy. It's his birthday today.

Now DD's hot and starts to cough.

How long did your DD have a fever for? I think you said she had a low-grade temp for a week or so?

Perhaps you could call a GP and ask whether it could be a symptom of grandular fever.

Yes she did, I will take her back to doctor if it carries on with the swollen glands

Poor DS having his birthday today when not feeling well, will he manage some cake?

winnybella · 01/02/2011 15:25

I hope so! I'm making Victoria sponge with strawberries and cream-first time ever. It's in the oven now and rising at an alarming rate Hmm

Hope DD feels better tonight.

We just picked her up from school and she threw up on the way home... Poor thing... Sad

winnybella · 01/02/2011 16:41

Hmm. If it has been going on for a while, I would take her to a doctor, I think. Poor mite.

this is typical symptoms of what we had before xmas, confirmed as influenza b. It took the kids over two weeks to drop the fever, One Ds developed pneumonia (but he is suseptable). Hope your children are better soon.

Cristiane · 03/02/2011 20:19

Oh dear lucy how is DS now?

DD2 who gets a wheeze had flu jab (including swine flu) early January thank goodness. However DD1 still bad after two weeks since fever first appeared. 39 overnight and unusually it stayed during the day today.

Went back to doc and if she's not better by MOnday they will run some blood tests to check not glandular fever (which I had when I was 5) and other illnesses.

Going through Calpol at a terrible rate of knots.

winnybella · 04/02/2011 16:49

Your poor ds, lucy.

How's your DD, Cristiane?

Mine had a fever on Tuesday, no fever on Wednesday and over 40 yesterday. Today around 38 in the morning, she's still having her nap.

Called the doctor and she said it's the flu. DS is fine, though, coughing, but no fever and not really tired.
