Oh crap. I think DS might have a flu.

Was complaining in the morning that his head was hurting but didn't have a fever and was quite lively.

Then I find him in bed, sleeping, 39 degrees, nasty cough.

He's never ever ill, I mean not even a sniffle in the last 5 years. He's almost 9.

DD (23 mo) is always with him, cuddling etc, she'll probably will have caught off him.

It sounds like a (swine) flu, doesn't it?

Do I need to do anything? Gave him some paracetamol and left him in bed. Will be making chicken soup later.

What do I need to watch out for?

Keep him cool, paracetamol to ease discomfort and look at him to make sure he's responsive and himself if a little subdued and tired.

Any rashes, uncontrollable fevers, unresponsiveness, pain disproportionate to a virus, sudden worsening of symptoms etc then see somebody.

DD is properly ill for the first time atm after years of robust health. Has an ear infection, chest infection, cough and is vomitting. Has all happened at once. I didn't know if she was allergic to penicillin when they asked as she'd never had it. She is it turns out. Grin

Cristiane · 29/01/2011 15:29

winny I found my DD in bed this morning with a headache, she's up at 39 degrees too. During night she was crying saying her legs were sore. I feel so sorry for the poor thing, she is normally such a robust little thing.

I am worried too about swine flu.

Sorry to hear of other los being poorly.

Shall I get him some Tamiflu? But it's the weekend, I guess I could call ooh. Otoh heard Tamiflu can have really unpleasant side effects.

Guess I'll just watch him.

Arrgh.

Thanks, verity, no, I totally forgot what to do as he hasn't been ill in years Smile

Temp down a bit, just put a cool compress on his forehead, will check again in 20 minutes.

Hard to tell, really, he's obviously ill, but coherent iyswim. Coughing now. Arrgh.

Oh well, better start on the chicken soup. And lime tree tea for sweating it out (disclaimer: old Polish folk wisdom, seems to work Hmm)

DP on Eurostar, will be here in a couple of hours, but has to work tomorrow. Hope DD and I won't get ill, don't know how I would deal with it.

OP posts:
winnybella · 29/01/2011 16:51

Hmm. Fever's down, lovely cough developing, he's laying on his bed and fiddling with stuff- so maybe not a flu? Although I guess you can have a mild version, right?

winny my DD's fever is still high but she has occasionally been eating. Have been giving calpol and nurofen and finally seems to be working. She's coughing too.

Am thinking about school. She was off most of last week with low grade fever and now not sure what to do - even if fever stays low rest of today it won't be a clear 24 hours without fever by tomorrow morning, maybe will have to keep her home again

brimfull · 30/01/2011 13:11

ds has just had virus like this
was lethargic , no appetite , feverish ,sick a few times, cough, snot
lasted 4 days
he's fine now ,still has cough but fine

winnybella · 30/01/2011 14:35

Cristiane I would keep her in, I think. I wouldn't send her in with fever, if you can avoid it. She obviously hasn't got over the infection.

I'm not sure what to do with DS tomorrow.

Fever's down, but he has a nasty cough and is tired.

Normally I would send him to school, but one, I don't like the sound of this cough and am not sure him running around etc will not make the infection come back (maybe an old-fashioned thinking) and two, I don't want him to infect other kids.

I'm not working at the mo, so can keep him.

Cristiane · 30/01/2011 14:52

Yes I think I will. DH took her out for an hour just now for a change of scene and she fell asleep so obviously not better yet, I also don't want her to be picking up any other new bugs or infecting others. x

winnybella · 30/01/2011 15:11

Arrgh. Fever's not gone, it's rising back up (he woke up with no/low temp).

Horrid cough, dry, by deep and barking-like.

Staying in bed by choice- never heard of.

Cold it ain't.

Hope DD won't get it.

OP posts:
winnybella · 30/01/2011 15:11

Oh, and headache and pain behind eyes.

OP posts:
Cristiane · 30/01/2011 15:15

Barking cough here too

And headache and DD keeps blinking and looking up oddly, I checked she didn't have light sensitivity or a stiff neck, have you checked (I had viral meningitis a few years back and it was horrendous, I am paranoid about it)

And has gone to bed too now.

winnybella · 30/01/2011 15:44

No stiff neck or light sensitivity, although keeps on rubbing his eyes.

Temp rising, will give him some paracetamol.

God, this cough is horrid.

I think it must be flu, as sudden onset, dry cough, headache, fever with chills...no runny nose etc which would be a cold symptom.

Doesn't really matter whether cold or flu, but am a bit paranoid about DD (not yet 2) and God forbid DP should get it- he would be in bed for a month Hmm

My head's starting to ache, hopefully it's just psychosomatic.

We all have the same virus (me, dh, my parents, ILs, half the preschool, most of the town). Fever with chills, dry cough, headache, achy, lethargic.

I think it's just a virus. Having had flu, I know it's just a virus actually.

We're drinking plenty and lounging around.

Even if it is flu (swine or otherwise) you haven't mentioned anything that puts you in an at risk group. Even swine flu is mild for most people.

Try not to worry too much.

winnybella · 30/01/2011 16:01

Thanks, SOH, no,I'm not worrying that much.

Afaik, though, different people might be affected in a different way by flu- it's possible to have a relatively mild version.

I also had once what I think must have been a flu years ago- 2 weeks in bed, hallucinating with over 40 degrees fever etc- not fun at all.

Oh well, DS will be force fed some chicken soup in a sec and I made some lovely onion syrup for him to have later Grin He might be very happy to escape from me to school in a few days.

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 30/01/2011 18:10

Yes like I said, swine flu is mild for most people. Sorry, wasn't clear when I said the 'same virus' I meant we (my family/friends) all have the same one, not that it's the same as what you have but was just trying to reassure that everybody I know seems to be struggling atm. Tis the season for it.

I meant that I know I don't have flu. I have some non-specific virus. It's certainly doing the rounds.

Hope he's better soon. Smile

Cristiane · 30/01/2011 18:49

Winny after an afternoon asleep dd has fever of 38 but seems a bit better, no school tomorrow though. Am considering doc again tomorrow as it's beea week now

Showofhands how long did your virus last?

winnybella · 30/01/2011 19:06

DS in bed, fever gone, but very tired and coughing.

No school for him tomorrow.

38 degrees in the pm is not bad (as it usually rises in the evening). Hope she's on the mend.

OP posts:
winnybella · 31/01/2011 13:49

DS is very happy as no school for him today or tomorrow. Tired, in bed, but almost no temp, just awful cough.

DD seemed a bit hot just right now and I heard her coughing from her cot- I bet she caught it as well.

How's your DD today, Cristiane?

OP posts:
winnybella · 31/01/2011 19:40

39 degree underarm and refusing to take paracetamol Hmm

What do I do? He's asleep already.

OP posts:
winnybella · 31/01/2011 20:32

Bump.

Do I wake him up and give him some paracetamol?

A bit concerned as he had fever on Saturday, low temp yesterday and high again tonight.

He seems ok, just tired.
