My baby has blue feet and red, swollen, shiny toes.....

Well the title says it really.
My dd is 9 months and has always had cold hands and feet that are blue most of the time. Our house is quite cold so I thought this was the reason.
Tonight though after her bath I noticed that three of her toes on one foot were very swollen, red and shiny almost looking like blisters but without fluid iykwim. There were also 3 purple wheels (sp) on her foot sole.
I'm thinking maybe she has a circulatory problem like Raynaud's.
Has anyone any experience of these symptoms?

No clue, but take pictures anytime you see it to show to the doctor.

Tbh, I would be probably going to A&E, or at least calling GP first thing in the morning.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/01/2011 21:45

That does not sound good - give NHS 24 or your out of hours service a call. Swollen toes can indicate injury or a blockage.

thisisyesterday · 28/01/2011 21:45

i don't have experience of it but it would concern me. i'd keep an eye on it for the moment and get her to the GP as soon as you can.

have you checked her again recently?

truffleshuffle · 28/01/2011 21:52

I'll ring the doctors in the morning then.
Mmm feeling a bit guilty as she's always had bad ciculation but I just thought it was because of the weather etc.

DD2 had this at a similar age. After various tests they decided it was a juvenile type of Reynauds. Her feet and hands would go dark purple and then when they warmed would be bright red. The consultant described it a "unusual perfusion." It would often be worse just after she'd eaten -I guess becuase the blood was diverted to her stomach.

She is now 2.8 now and it rarely happens. I hoep this is some reassurance to you, but I would certainly see your GP about it. I second the photo idea. I initially snapped some pictures on my mobile which the GP said were very useful.

truffleshuffle · 28/01/2011 21:58

Oh thanks for that Nigglewiggle.
I will see my GP.
I'm glad your DD is ok now Smile

Smile Let us know how you get on. I'd be interested to know if you get the same explanation.

winnybella · 28/01/2011 22:04

Hmm, but did you check on her since? Did the swelling go down?

Niggle, did your DD also had the swelling and the purple bands that OP is talking about?

maltravers · 28/01/2011 22:08

Sorry to interfere, but I think you should get your dc down to a&e. Best of luck.

Nigglewiggle · 28/01/2011 22:10

When the extremities were red they were swollen and shiny. I'm not quite sure what was meant by "purple wheels", but she did sometimes have a patchwork on her feet with some parts a normal colour, some red and some purple. The purple areas were never raised.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/01/2011 22:15

There are some viruses which cause weals on the feet (some forms of meningitis for example) so it does need checking out, but it's possible she's got cellulitis from a splinter and that needs treating if the toes are swollen. In other words, take photos and seek help. Don't panic but you do need to get it checked :)

truffleshuffle · 28/01/2011 22:19

sorry what i meant by purple wheels/weals was circular purple marks about the size of a pea. they weren't raised.
i haven't checked since as she's asleep in bed.

winnybella · 28/01/2011 22:21

Uhmm. Please go and check.

winnybella · 28/01/2011 22:21

And do a glass test.

Nigglewiggle · 28/01/2011 22:24

Truffle I'll see if I can get a picture on here of DD's feet during an 'episode' so that you can compare. Does she seem otherwise well?

truffleshuffle · 28/01/2011 22:25

that would be really helpful nigglewiggle.
she's fine otherwise.

OP posts:
DirtyMartini · 28/01/2011 22:26

Please get it checked asap, you really cannot be too careful :(

babybear5 · 28/01/2011 22:30

no great advice im afraid truffle but i'm with everyone else..please get this checked asap. Keep us posted Smile

truffleshuffle · 28/01/2011 22:49

ive just got her up and her left foot is warm with shiny swollen toes and her right foot is freezing cold with blue/purple blanching marks on the sole.

She seems fine in herself.

Sirzy · 28/01/2011 22:52

Personally I think I would rather go to a and e to get check than spend time worrying and waiting to see the gp.

babybear5 · 28/01/2011 22:56

I agree sirzy..i would go to a&e to get it checked truffle

Nigglewiggle · 28/01/2011 22:57

Right *Truffle" I think you should be able to see the pictures now. I hope this helps. As you can see from the second picture she was not ill or upset in anyway when this was happening. I found it pretty frightening though, so I can understand why some are suggesting A&E.

truffleshuffle · 28/01/2011 23:05

Thanks Nigglewiggle for the pics

OP posts:
Nigglewiggle · 28/01/2011 23:08

Does it look similar? I won't leave them up there incase people think I've got some sort of purple foot obsession! But I hope it has reassured you. It can look really scary, but be totally benign. Still get it checked though. Smile

chixinthestix · 28/01/2011 23:28

My DS has chilblains on his feet that can look a bit like your DD's sound when they are bad - they start purplish then go red and blistery and eventally the skin peels. He's had them each winter since he was about a year old. He gets them on his toes and on the sides of his feet.
