13 month old with temp of 39.4 but not looking poorly

Maybe a bit more cuddly than usual but she isn't snotty or coughing or crying or seemingly uncomfortable. Apart from the temperature there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with her. She had jabs last Monday which could be the cause?

Should I be dosing her with Calpol/Nurofen or should I let it run it's course?

I don't like giving medicine unnecessarily but 39.4 is quite high.

Confused Advice would be welcome

Hi
I would give some calpol to bring the temp down.
If it goes up again I'd go to docs just for peace of mind.
My DS always gets a temp just before he shows any symptoms of a cold.

Hopefully it will come to nothing though.

winnybella · 26/01/2011 17:01

I would give Calpol.
Could be from jabs.

HettyAmaretti · 26/01/2011 17:06

I'd temp hourly and give calpol if there's any further rise in temp (or if she seems unwell, in pain or anything like that). Fever has a function (destroying viruses) and if she's well and the temp is stable she'll probably get better more quickly without the calpol.

IME it's a bit late and a bit early for it to be from the jabs IYSWIM. Is usually same day, next day or after a week.

If you're worried at all contact your GP, OHO GP or NHS direct.

Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 17:06

Thanks. Have given Nurofen as it seems to work better/faster than Calpol on my children.

Jabs were 9 days ago but I think it's 2 weeks for a reaction so could be. She's also teething I think.

Poor thing just looks a bit fed up. DS (3.9) is giving her a cuddle and they're watching Octonauts

That is a high temperature and in a baby could lead to febrile convulsions, so I would definitely dose with Calpol. If it doesn't go down I would see the GP and try and take a urine sample with you. DD had three UTIs within four months at that age and they must be treated.

Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 17:08

X-posted with Hetty. That was my dilemma. She seems fine so the temp can't be bothering her that much so I was thinking I'd just let it get on with it.

Will see how she goes after this one dose...

Had wondered about Febrile Convulsions Bunbaker. Both DC's got 40+ temps with the flu before xmas and the doctor warned me about those.

She's had Nurofen now, hopefully it'll bring things down.

If not, any tips on getting a urine sample?

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 26/01/2011 17:16

At 13 months I would give her loads to drink and then sit her on a potty until she finally wees. It might take a long time, but I can't think of a better way. BTW you will need to rinse out the potty with boiling water beforehand.

Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 17:49

She's gone downhill since the Nurofen. Properly clingy now and refused to eat anything at dinner but Yogurt. She had 2 'Little Star's and then sicked some back up.

Looks like I posted too soon Sad

Will keep an eye on her tonight and get her to the doctors first thing.

Had to do a Urine Sample when DS was small but the doctor gave me a little bag which went over his willy and stuck to his skin - much easier. Will go and dig out the potty....

We have to test DS's urine quite often due to a kidney problem. I put some cotton wool in his nappy then squeeze the pee from the cotton wool into the container!
Goodluck, hope it all settles soon.

Bunbaker · 26/01/2011 17:59

I recall the hospital putting something in DD's nappy to catch the wee. (She was hospitalised with her UTIs). If you can't get the temp down with drugs ring NHS direct and go to A & E if you have to. Please let us know how your daughter is. I will be thinking of you.

HettyAmaretti · 26/01/2011 18:03

Oh, poor little mite. Good job you got the nurofen in before she started feeling too awful.

Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 18:20

Temp has gone down a little to 39.1. Will give her Calpol at 7.50 if she's not asleep.

Not sure we've got any cotton wool. DH has just gotten home. Might send him out to get some...

my daughter had almost the same temperature when she was 18 months old and no other symptoms whatsoever!, it wasn't going down after i've given her calpol so i went to see GP and guess what the doc said she had a swine flu and gave her tamiflu!!!(it was 1.6 year ago when swine flu was "affecting" everyone,) 2 days later i saw that 2 of her teeth were out. so till now i'm not sure, was it swine flu or was she simply teething?

Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 18:34

She's definitely teething. There are at least 4 big bumps on her gums waiting to erupt. She's had 2 come through recently. She's a little bahind the amount the red book says she should be and they seem to be coming through thick and fast to make up :)

Whether it's just teething or something else, I don't know. Will be keeping a very close on on her.

She had a low tempterature yesterday evening but nothing this worrying and never looked poorly. It didn't affect her sleeping and she was fine this morning. Something is going on that's for sure!

OP posts:
winnybella · 26/01/2011 18:39

So you gave Nurofen at 5 and one and a half hour later it's gone down only by 0.3 degrees?

Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 18:43

Yes. Not a lot is it.

OP posts:
Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 18:44

It's now 39.0. Still heading down but slowly. Very slowly

OP posts:
winnybella · 26/01/2011 18:45

No. Maybe it depends on the child/infection, but when DD had a bad cold few weeks ago, her temp went down from over 39 to normal within an hour.

Is it hot in your house? Is she dressed warmly?

If not, I would call nhs direct or ooh, I think.

Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 19:47

I checked again when she was in the bath and di both ears this time. 39 still in the left ear and 38.4 in the right so now I'm wondering if it's an ear infection.

We've given her some Calpol and have dressed her in just a long sleeved vest and a 1 tog sleeping bag. I'll go up and check her temperature again in an hour.

OP posts:
chocolategal · 26/01/2011 20:13

Hopefully the calpol will kick in & you will have an ok night.
Sounds like she might have something brewing like a uti or ear infection combined with the teething :(

Blatherskite · 26/01/2011 22:19

She's sleeping so far. Not deeply enough that I can use the thermometer, she's a very light sleeper at the best of times, but she does feel a bit cooler to the touch.

Hoping she sleeps through and I'll take her to the docs if necessary in the morning.

OP posts:
dikkertjedap · 26/01/2011 22:34

TBH in future if she has a high temperature I would not put her in the bath as it can increase temperature even more. Hope she gets better soon.

Blatherskite · 27/01/2011 10:12

DD slept through last night but her temperature was still 38.3 (in both ears) when she woke up so we're going to the doctors today. The only appointment I can get is 5.40 but at least that gives me all day to try and get a urine sample!

She seems happy in herself, not so clingy or fed up today. Don't think it's anything serious but will get her checked out anyway

chocolategal · 27/01/2011 13:58

Aww glad you had a good night.
Fingers crossed she is on the mend now
