Pale poo and strong-smelling wee - worried!

I'm not sure if there is an issue, but DD (2.5 years) lately has very pale coloured poo and her wee seems to smell strongly.

She seems to be drinking normally, so I don't think she's deyhdrated.

I've read a couple of threads about pale poo which may be linked to cows' milk, but DD doesn't consume any dairy products.

I don't think she has coeliac disease, and has in fact had a blood test for it in the past, which was negative.

She's not putting much weight on at the moment, but seems to be growing normally otherwise. She's on the tall side.

I don't know if it's related, but her complection is pale at the moment. She's also a bit behind on hair growth. It's short still and is still sprouting around the hairline. She's also very irritable lately, but I think that's because she needs an afternoon nap still, but refuses to take one.

I'd be grateful if anyone could offer any advice.

Not really, but I know that pale poo and strong wee can be a sign of something serious.

I recall DD1 having this for about 2 weeks at a similar age, after a tummy bug. I mentioned it to the GP and she said it is quite normal as the body re-adjusts.

Has she had a bug recently?

I agree though, you need to discuss your concerns with a GP.

Your DD will be fine tonight! It's not an emergency and it's probably nothing important, and I am sure your GP will take your concerns seriously and investigate fully.

Please don't worry too much - get a good night's sleep and tackle first thing.

Silly thing but is your child taking any vitamin supplements ? I know one brand of vit tonic can in some children turn their poo pale.

Strong wee? Could be a urine infection. Might be worth a sample to the Dr.

About a two weeks' ago, she had a night of vomiting, followed by loss of appetite until this week. These symptoms, along with pale poo and strong wee, seem to be typical of hepatitis A, from what I've seen online. She is also very pale at the moment - almost ghostly.

Yes, Pancakeflipper, she takes the Animal Parade multi-vitamins. I wonder if it's linked. As there's iron in that I thought the poo would be dark though.

ds1 used to get pale poo with certain tummy upsets. It smelt foul and used to give him awful nappy rash (which only metanium would help). It cleared eventually after two or three days, each time and hasn't recurred/led to anything awful.

I also remember asking the gp about strong smelling wee. Her answer was that wee is designed to remove excess materials from the body, so smells stronger if it is removing something unpleasant. However that is a sign that it is doing its job, so no need to worry.

Hope our experience, and the GP tomorrow, put your mind at rest. It really is probably nothing major.

I would think it's linked to the tummy upset if it's started just around that time.

I also expected poo's to be darker durle to iron but some kids seem to have poo that sniggers at this theory.

But I think for your sanity I would have a chat with the Dr. Let us know how you get on.

We have an appointment at 4.40 today. I thought I'd be less concerned in the daytime (I'm one for night-time worries), but DD's been so listless today, so I'm still worried!

Well, the GP saw DD and will call the Paediatric dept at the hospital on Monday to have her blood tested.

I need to get a urine sample and drop it in on Monday.

Fingers crossed it will be nothing. The GP said we need to get it looked into asap though.

Don't worry all weekend. It could be something like a urine infection. It makes some people utterly grotty and have symtoms you'd never associate with wee infections.

Hope she's a little perkier today.

Today DD wet herself three times, which is odd as she's been using the toilet properly for weeks now, with no accidents.

She's showing no signs of jaundice.

Really worried though!
