2yo temp 40.3 - cause for concern?

PDR · 12/12/2010 23:55

DS has been poorly since Saturday morning with a very high temp - ranging from 38 - 40.3 when I just measured it. Average I'd say is 39 even though I have given him nurofen at 9am, 1pm and 11pm. He is absolutely boiling to touch - wearing only tshirt and nappy.

Have already given Nurofen and am pushing fluids. He is just lying in bed with me eyes open but very spaced out. Had had wet nappies but no poos.

He has a slight cough and runny nose but no other symptoms.

He does not talk yet so cannot communicate with him if he has a headache etc.

Is such a high temp cause for concern does anyone know?

pigindisguise I have just been phoning round today, the only place I have found where children not classified as 'at risk' can be vaccinated (flu vaccine which includes H1N1) is the Portland Hospital in London. All other places I rang were not willing to do it, I was really surprised because I though you could have it privately done through GPs, not surprisingly pharmacies/tesco etc only do over 16s, but they of course don't have the medical background so that is fair enough. I am still agonizing whether to get dd vaccinated given that she seems to pick up so many things since starting school.

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 14/12/2010 09:56

How are all the poorly children this morning?

I did think all the SF panic was mad last year, media hype etc, but this year everyone i know has come down with some type of flu like bug in the last week, even people who are not in day-to-day contact with us. It worries me tbh..

DS(4m) seems to have a sore throat as when he starts to babble and screech he then starts to cry, but is much better.

DD (3yrs) came down with a slight temp before bed, so gave her calprofen. She woke in the night due to a wet nappy that had leaked (first wet nappy at night in 2wks) and was shivering. Her temp was 40.5. Gave her some water and calpol and she was fine, still has a high temp this morning but is acting normal. She is obviously a lot tougher than me!

Supposed to be going to a christmas party 2 streets away this evening, but Confused about whether to go.

PDR · 14/12/2010 10:26

Morning!

DS's temp was back up to 40 in the night and had to go in to him 3 or 4 times but each time settled back off again after a cuddle and drink of water.

He's ok this morning again - seems to be much worse in the evening/night.

DH has come down with it as well so I am thinking it is seasonal flu? His temp is 38-39 and he is sweating buckets. He is in bed.

I still feel ok - am 30 weeks pg so really hope I don't get it! I have not been vaccinated either as my doctor actually advised against it.

sorry to hear about your DCs Alice, hope they're better soon.
I think the anti biotics must be working here because DD is so much better this morning and her temperature seems normal (haven't tested but she doesn't feel hot), so the last lot of meds I gave her for temp was at 2am. Fingers crossed it'll stay that way.
Am starting to wonder whether she had/has a urine infection now - her nappy this morning was very yellow, and shewas rubbing her tummy yesterday, although the anti bs are a bright orange Hmm

dikker you'd better start saving if you're going to the portland!

PDR · 14/12/2010 10:48

DS had grommets at the Portland - t'is lovely. We ordered "room service" lunch and our insurers still haven't sent us the bill Grin this was July!

Hello all, hope all th Dcs are starting to feel better. We ended up at OOH last night and Dd was dagnosed with a chest infection so we now have antibiotics. Hopfully on the mend. I think it is some sort of flu she has and apparently 10 children were off in her class yesterday.

pigindisguise · 14/12/2010 14:18

I spoke too soon. She was fine all morning but now temp was up again to 39.7, so back on the calpol.. She looked like she was about to pass out/fall asleep in the high chair but is ok now. Is that the temp do you think? Or is it just that she is knackered through being ill and having disturbed sleep

PolkaDotRudolf · 15/12/2010 12:32

How is everyone doing?

DS is still quite ill - awful cough which is causing him to vomit on occasions. He also has diarreah and although he'd drinking plenty he is dehydtared. Still going with Calpol when he needs it though high temp comes and goes (mainly in the evening/night). DH is currently lying in his bed with him trying to get him off to sleep. So hard with such a bad cough :(

PolkaDotRudolf · 15/12/2010 12:33

(I am PDR) Xmas Smile

pigindisguise · 15/12/2010 12:43

Hi PDR. DD still not herself but ate a big bowl of porridge this morning. She's asleep now but I am concerned about her poo now (I sound neurotic!!) - itwas a very dark brown earlier on, not the usual colour, and she woke up from her nap and sort of doubled up and cried as though she had tummy pain, then went back to sleep. I'm just worried it's a reaction to the anti biotics? Any ideas? (have posted a separate thread on this btw)

verytellytubby · 15/12/2010 13:08

I've just taken DD to the dr's (she's 8) as she's been ill since Sunday night and last night I couldn't get her temperature down with calpol and nurofen. Was starting to panic at 3am.

Dr was pretty flippant (and unpleasant). Not our usual one. Said it could possibly be swine flu as they are getting more and more cases. DD has a heart condition so I feel a bit panicked.

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 15/12/2010 14:33

Tellytubby - the OOH Dr was really not bothered by my 4m old with temp of 40.5 and hacking cough. I actually said to him "So, is that it then?" I always try to see the nurses at our surgery, as they are so much more sympathetic, and will listen to what the problem is and give practical advice. They should get paid so much more.

We seem to have turned a corner here, now feel that each day is a step towards DC being better. I feel so below par but not really ill iyswim? If i could just push christmas back another week...

PolkaDotRudolf · 15/12/2010 14:46

alice and tellytubby both the OOH doc and NHS direct were pretty flippant with me... I guess they must have had so many calls about the same thing but when children are invloved you're bound to worry.

DS is now back in bed which is the best place for him and sleeping seems to be the only time he gets a break from the cough!!!

DH (who is sick too) has now written on his facebook that he has Swine Flu Hmm He hasn't seen / spoken to a doctor. Men!

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 15/12/2010 14:51

man swineflu is very serious you know Xmas Wink

I am sure you are right, that they have had call after call from worried parents saying "My child has a nasty cough and high temp, bit conerned" bit like a production line i guess.

Strange how the cough is fine when you are resting, i could sleep for a week, but when i'm awake i am so wheezy. DS and DD are the same.

fothergill · 15/12/2010 18:30

Hopefully sounds like you are all checked over and on the mend. I am fairly certain there are swine flu cases on this thread. Not us luckily (dh still rankled a year later after I refused to accept he had swine flu)
I ended up taking dd to the gp and it was an ear infection that hadn't been tackled by the first lot of antibiotics. So she has had some rare breed of antibiotic and within 24hrs is back to her lovely self for the first time in weeks. Fingers crossed we can all stay well now, at least for Christmas.
Hope you all do too!

PolkaDotRudolf · 16/12/2010 02:19

Up with DS again :( temp is 38.6 so have given calpol...
5th night tonight - I'm bloody knackered!

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 16/12/2010 09:13

PDR Sad

Going to see the nurse today, DS has got bloody mucus, started yesterday and he has still got a dreadful cough and everytime he sneezes or i wipe his nose there is blood in it Sad

PolkaDotRudolf · 16/12/2010 10:02

Just woken up Blush calling the doctor (again)!

pigindisguise · 16/12/2010 10:36

oh dear Alice & PDR, poor things, hope they're ok.
DD is sleeping at the moment (very unlike her) but I think/hope it's because she's knackered after being in the hospital til midnight last night (she's ok though). PDR the sticky dark poo was worrying me and I spoke to chemist who told me to stop giving ABs. Spoke to out of hours GP who told me to bring her in last night. He said it looked and smelt like a bloody poo (I took the nappy in with me) and thought it was bec. of the nurofen. He referred us to the childrens hospital who were very busy but got to see somebody at midnight, who said 'I'm not worried at all about that poo'! She also developed a rash all over her body which might be a reaction to the ABs so I'm to keep an eye on that.

Am absolutely exhausted, have hardly eaten the last few days but don't really care, I just want her to be ok.

PolkaDotRudolf · 16/12/2010 10:44

pig sorry you had a trip to hosp! must have been scary! I am allergic to 2 different antibiotic families myself - penicillin and erythromycin (sp?) and I get a whole body rash...

Well doctor rang back and said that this flu like bug is lasting a long longer than normal. His children are also sick. He said he has had lots of calls this morning about the same thing. Hopefully DS will start to feel better in 3/4 days time.

He is currently eating toast and drinking orange juice so that's a good start!!!!

It was very scary although I was surprisingly calm! Probably because she was well in herself (and certainly a lot better than she has been the last few days).
My brother is allergic to penicillin too (which is what she's on) so I wonder if she is slightly. She's been on it for about 3 days though and the rash only appeared last night. They told me to carry on with the course and just keep an eye on the rash Confused

Good news that your DS is eating. DD had a big bowl of readybrek this morning, scoffed the lot.

verytellytubby · 16/12/2010 11:49

Just been confirmed that DD has Swine flu. Yikes. She has a heart condition so waiting for dr to ring me back. DS2 has a high temperature which I assume is the start so waiting for DS1 to come down with it too!

PolkaDotRudolf · 16/12/2010 12:11

tellytubby how do the confirm it?

pigindisguise · 16/12/2010 13:00

oh god tellytubby how stressful for you. hope she's ok (and your other DCs)
