2yo temp 40.3 - cause for concern?

PDR · 12/12/2010 23:55

DS has been poorly since Saturday morning with a very high temp - ranging from 38 - 40.3 when I just measured it. Average I'd say is 39 even though I have given him nurofen at 9am, 1pm and 11pm. He is absolutely boiling to touch - wearing only tshirt and nappy.

Have already given Nurofen and am pushing fluids. He is just lying in bed with me eyes open but very spaced out. Had had wet nappies but no poos.

He has a slight cough and runny nose but no other symptoms.

He does not talk yet so cannot communicate with him if he has a headache etc.

Is such a high temp cause for concern does anyone know?

Hi Riven, would the GP give you paracetamol suppositories instead? Am sure they have low levels of carbs.

Yes 24 hours to speak to a nurse is quite bad - she did say they were very very busy though. But the OOO doctors made it a priority call and a doctor called within 20 mins so that was very good I thought. Although he only gave me the same advice I was given on here Grin it's good to have reassurance!

I called NHS direct over the weekend and was told that there was an 8 hour wait for a nurse to call back. It was actually less than that, but they are either very busy or the numbers working have been cut?

It doesn't work as a service though if the wait is that long as I would just go to A and E as that would be quicker.

I def think there is something doing the rounds at the moment as my DD has had something very similar, high temp that has been hard to keep down, snotty nose, viral rash etc. Took her to OOH GP yesterday who said it's viral tonsillitis but that she had seen about 20odd patients with same thing just yesterday!

Hope everyone makes a swift recovery :)

DS still sleeping..... don't think I'll be sending him to nursery tomo or Wed as he has diareah as well. Sods law he was booked in for 3 days this week as I have SPD and find it difficult to look after him alone - they will still charge us the £40/day fees!
Our GP should ring later as he usually rings when he's notified one of his patients has spoken to OOH service so will ask his advice.

These poor babies Sad

Riven - is this your disabled DD? I expect it is especially worrying.

DS is cooler now 38.6, but so unhappy when he wakes up that i have made an appointment to see the nurse, just for reassurance. Calprofen truly does work wonders though.

DD now down to 39.1 after nurofen (she went to 40.3 again Sad. Have given 1st dose of ABs too so hopefully that will help.
PDR from your list of swine flu symptoms DD has runny nose, sore throat and tiredness but they could be symptoms of a cold or flu couldn't they?
Having said that swine flu is back - my sister's in hospital with pneumonia and swine flu - she's much better though and hopes to come home today (and before you ask she lives far away from us so DD hasn't caught it off her)

PDR · 13/12/2010 15:24

Riven is the suppository an option? Can you call back and get them to leave a srcipt at reception for you.

Our GP just rang and didn't mention SF and said just a nasty bug - keep going with the calpol and/or nurofen depending on how high temp is and keep pushing the fluids. He will call tomo to see how we are going. I guess they don't want you to come in if they can help it as it will spread the germs.

DS still sleeping! Might wake him up if he's not up by 4pm for a drink! Keep checking on him and have got monitor on (can hear him snoring as he's v bunged up!).

Yes agree pig that symptoms on the SF list are quite comprehensive so pretty much anyone with a high temp would most likely have 2 or 3 off the list.

Hope your sister is ok though - sounds awful!

My DD is sleeping, wish I could after the last two nights but DS awake and lively despite his temperature. I'm not going to wake her as I presume her body is recovering. I'm worried about her fluid intake but she doesn't drink much fluids at the best of times.

pigindisguise · 13/12/2010 15:28

I know, scary stuff. She's much better now thanks. Her DD(7) got it too (swine flu not pneumonia thank god) but is better now, her DS (5) didn't, and he had the jab last year. I didn't get mine jabbed, now I'm humming and haing again (not sure if it's on offer anymore anyway)

mumbar · 13/12/2010 15:51

Oh PDR and RIVEN hope your DC's are feeling better soon.

PDR must be a worry as your DS too young to talk to you.

RIVEN, I am thinking of you and know how worried you must be. Have to confess at PMSL at "Quite liking the sleepy version"
Has your DD had the swine flu vaccine? (sorry do not know your views on vacs). My school (special ed) gave it t all staff and pupils last year and would think you and DD would be entitled and your family as carers. .

PDR · 13/12/2010 16:48

temp now back to 39.5 :(

Sorry to hear about everyones poor children. I'm having the same problem with my DD (8yrs old)too. She is in day 4 of a horrible high temperature, cough, and has been sick a couple of times. Have been to the docs and she said if she has not had a wee by 8pm she may have to be admitted. I am now trying to encourage her to drink tiny sips of water which she is struggling with despite the threats of hospital Sad

Hope your dc all get better soon - really difficult when they are so ill.

MegGriffin - doctors should be able to see whether your dd is dehydrated or not and hence whether she needs to be admitted (if that is the reason they are considering admission), when my dd was a baby and had high fever and did not wee, the doctor said that she didn't wee because of the high fever (and lost all fluids through sweating, hence nothing left to wee) however she was not dehydrated at any stage (there are skin checks you can do, google how to check for dehydration, I believe they are also somewhere on the NHS website). Also, if she feels sick, the key is to have little sips often and not too much at once as it may make her throw up. I just picked up my dd and was told how many children and teachers are ill and that swine flu is rife at the moment ... I really dread it as it made DH very ill.

dikkertjedap · 13/12/2010 18:25

You probably already know this but when they are sick/feel like vomiting they should NOT be given any form of lemonade (this used to be the advice but it has now been found to make it worse rather than better). If you are concerned about dehydration you can also try to give sips of an oral rehydration fluid (Boots, Tesco, etc.)

fothergill · 13/12/2010 18:55

I did wonder about swine flu with dd1 but she just didn't seem floored enough by it to me. The rest of us all got tonsillitus so maybe it was that.

Riven, sorry you must be going through the mill. You did make me laugh at the high temps always being in the night just when you can't get any perspective. The other night I got up at 3 to get warm cloth for dd2 forehead (I know I know but she likes it and I swear it works)to find the central heating had frozen. There were dry little tears wept that night I can tell you. She's up at 38 again like clockwork after tea. Thing is, because I think this is a cold following on the back of the chesty cough I can't tell when it started and how long it has been going on for.

I was a bit snappy and intolerant this weekend and dh told me to lighten up - I pointed out that in a lighthouse they have to employ three people because if they go crazy trapped inside for so many weeks there will be one to stop them killing each other.

PDR · 13/12/2010 19:31

Sympathy to everyone with suffering DC tonight.

DS asked to go to bed at 6.30 so I obliged and he seems to have gone off no problem. Can't help thinking all this sleeping might mean I am up half the night with him!

I am home alone tonight as DH is working late and it was a bugger to get the calpol inside him as I only have a small syringe so have to give 2 lots to make up the correct dose. By the time I have given the first one he is wise to it and I have to almost pin him down to get the second one anywhere near his mouth Blush Dam the sugar free calpol! When I was a child it was full of sugar and I actuallly used to ask for it Hmm!!!!!
