Has anyone had a baby with these symptoms (for want of a better word)

DS is a slow/ poor weight gainer (75th to 2nd centile over 5 months)

diarrhea every day ranging from pale putty to green froth to green/ black to mucus

ongoing cough

ongoing runny nose (clear)

said to allergic to milk

Does anyone have any thoughts? He's happy, pale but so am I.

Am I being a nervous mother or would you think something of this?

how bad is the cough?

tbh i would worry about green -black- mucussy poo and the weight loss

TheUnmentioned · 14/11/2010 19:26

i would consider coeliac disease but im no expert

strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:27

HE hasn't lost weight, well no more than 1-2 oz in a week. Just very slow gain. Green/ black is fairly rare. HE does about 5-6 nappies a day which cover the range.

Cough very wet. On antibiotics. A few times coughing fits have let to vomit, about one a day this week. Interferes with sleep.

What has your GP or HV suggested? Never worry about being a nervous mum, just ask questions... GPs are very used to seeing babies in their first years, so go as often as you feel necessary.

Good luck.

strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:28

Theunmentioned, he's 5 months and not weaned so would anything like this factor in yet?

OP posts:
strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:31

GP sort of goes wide-eyed when he sees him and refers him. Hospital appointments take 3 months to get. Had one at 3 months, referred to dietician for allergy and reflux mentioned. HV beyond useless, suggested butter to fatten him, despite him not being on solids and allergic to dairy (no tests though to confirm). She's awful generally.

OP posts:

is he breast or bottle fed?

if the former have you cut dairy out of your diet?
if the latter have you been prescribed a hypoallergenic formula?

is he due to have allergy tests done?

notapizzaeater · 14/11/2010 19:33

BF or bottle fed - if BF it coould be the gluten/milk you are eating ?

strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:35

bottle, sorry should have said, hypoallergenic formula (nutramigen)

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 14/11/2010 19:36

so have you seen a difference since he has been on the nutramigen or not?

grapeandlemon · 14/11/2010 19:37

He is so young for all the symptoms together - what is his feeding like? How is he being fed?

I would take him to see a paediatrician do you have private healthcare?

Bobbiesmum · 14/11/2010 19:38

See a different gp and demand they get him seen sooner, they can write directly to consultant or speak to on call paeds for advice. A baby dropping down the centiles and who is pale needs investigating. Has he had his urine dipped?
My son had this and was found to have a uti but only because I pushed and pushed.
I am a doctor and struggled to get health professionals to listen.
Trust your instinct as a mother and 'do' not stop until you are happy with the answers you are given.
Good luck

strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:38

No big difference from normal formula, though less frequent poos (could do 14 a day) otherwise samey. He was constiapated on Soya.

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 14/11/2010 19:41

ok well if no different then it is either still affecting him (nutramigen simply has more altered cow's milk proteins in it) and he needs something synthetic such as neocate.

or, it isn't a milk issue

i would be banging on the GP's door and demanding another paed appt and really stressing the poor weight gain etc. it isn't fair to make you wait

i would also request an appointment with the paediatric allergy specialist to get him tested.

don't rest until you ahve an answer

strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:42

Bobbiesmum, he was referred to A&E for dehydration/ diarhhea whilst on SMA. They gave me a pot to collect his urine. This was impossible as he was not only not doing any but also was only 7 weeks! How do you get a 7 week old to pee in a pot?? He was discharged after a few hours and I was told he had a virus. He only improved on starting Soya, but soon became very constipated on that. He was in A&E with rash/ diarhhea at 4 months, also quickly sent out with a virus again (after being moaned at by nurses for wasting time with something the GP could deal with). Now he has a virus again with the cough (one month) so in another words since he was 6/7 weeks he's apparently had a virus. No one has investigated further beyond a quick look over.

Dietician in 2 weeks (12 weeks after last appt) despite her saying he must be reviewed in 4 weeks! Receptions said diary was full and couldn't book earlier. No reply to a message left. He saw the pead, but then weight a 25th. She glanced quickly, said he was fine, refered to dietician.

Bang and bang again !! Trust your instinct - my DS is coeliac he finally got diag. age 7 and had been showing the signs since weaning - doctors kept fobbing me off and its only when I lost it they actually did something !

If they need a urine sample again they can give you a special nappy it drains into - we managed to ctach one but was offered this Smile

thisisyesterday · 14/11/2010 19:48

when ds1 needed a sample taking they had a little bag with a sticky top that they tape over the penis and it catches the next wee they do.

i think you need to start kicking up a stink!

strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:48

Ok, I need reassurance as they clearly have me down has a fussy mum (they shouted at dh in A&E, long story).

What questions would you ask?
My GP seems happy to refer/ do but only if told/ asked to do specific things. Nice but a tad useless. VERY nice in fact, just a little blank.

OP posts:
strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:49

Well at the time he had a constant trickle of yellow water coming out of his bum so a wee was unlikely anyway, but good to know special nappies exist.

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 14/11/2010 19:51

you definitely aren't just a fussy mum. i had similar reactions with my first baby and in the end I took my partner with me and we both backed each other up and demanded to be seen asap

so, I would go in and say that something needs to give.
it is NOT normal for a baby to be so ill for so long.
the nappies and weight are a big worry and you want it sorted.

you need a referral to:
Paediatrician
Allergy specialist for testing

ask whether GP thinks a prescription for neocate would be helpful, if that doesn't change anything then you will know it is not milk related at all

Bobbiesmum · 14/11/2010 19:53

You can get a stick on bag to catch urine which isn't ideal but better than no sample. I'm not in the slightest saying this is a uti but it absolutely needs to be ruled out.
As a mother I would be telling you to demand an earlier referral and if you can afford it get a private consultation with a paediatrician.
It may be worth booking a double appointment with your so you have time to go through all your concerns.
Find out first which one had an interest in paeds, they all have different areas they specialise/are interested in. Don't leave till you have a referral.

strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:53

Thanks. I'm at a brick wall with GP as he's now under hospital dietician and they do what she says/ don't want to get involved. But her appts are so far apart.

Sorry forgot one other thing, he naps LOTS. More than an average newborn. Around 18 hours or more sleep a day.

OP posts:
strawberrycake · 14/11/2010 19:55

I need questions to ask/ what to say.

Anyone know of A private and affordable place in London?

OP posts:
notapizzaeater · 14/11/2010 19:55

I was at my local hospital and when I got annoyed they boounced me to the nearest Gastro Paed. Can your HV not suggest anything ?
