DS is a slow/ poor weight gainer (75th to 2nd centile over 5 months)

diarrhea every day ranging from pale putty to green froth to green/ black to mucus

ongoing cough

ongoing runny nose (clear)

said to allergic to milk

Does anyone have any thoughts? He's happy, pale but so am I.

Am I being a nervous mother or would you think something of this?

Hi, somewhere in your thread you asked about private paed, with our dd we see Dr Hay in Portland Hospital, initially for a number of issues to do with not gaining weight and diarrhoea (she was b/f) and we then just kept using him as we have often problems with GPs not getting it right (on occasions seriously wrong ...). He is expensive, last time I paid £175 for consultation, but he always puts my mind at rest and so far his treatments (or in some instances no treatment) have always worked. Also when dd had a bad rash, GP kept saying oh it is some sort of virus, don't worry, well Dr Hay looked at her, he knew straight away what it was, showed me pictures in one of his medical books (indeed exactly like dd) and prescribed treatment, 3 days later it started fading ... Hence we keep using him, because he seems immensely knowledgeable.

Got an appointment next Thursday at the hospital, I'll be mentioned the fact he poos more than he eats.

Good luck strawberry. Hope you get somewhere with it.

Write down your questions and don't be afraid to take the time to ask them (even if you think they are busy or the question seems daft) Make the most of the appointment and come away happy with the next step.

Let us know how you get on.

crispface · 17/11/2010 20:49

really sorry your son is going through this strawberrycake

the only thing I can say though is that Nutramigen causes green poos. Green poos are totally normal with this formula - they are even listed as a side effect on the tin. Am not minimising your concerns, I just don't wat people thinking that the green poo could be an issue when there is another explanation for it.

I only know this becaus I rushed dd to the doctors with her first green nutramigen poo Blush

but agree that you perhaps need to push to see a paediatrician.

strawberrycake · 18/11/2010 20:12

lol crispface, I expect green and saw the tin, he's always been green. It's the whitey ones and the ones that foam up like green mousse that surprise me!

Well a new story to add to our fucking unbelievable experiences with the NHS.

Appointment at 11 o'clock today, always lots of waiting so didn't worry for the first 45 min or so. Then I asked the guy on the desk how much longer: 'Don't know'. After an hour asked again, a bit patronising this time 'Each child needs as long as they need, it'll be your turn when it's your turn. After an hour and twenty mins waiting I asked him if I had time to walk hysterical ds outside to get him to sleep in the buggy as the wating room was very noisy and he was sleep deprived. HE just witered on about the weather. After an HOUR AND FORTY FIVE min I'm the only person left (it's a morning clinic!) and the nurse is bloody packing up things. Ask her how long. Minutes later the dietician rushes in. She hadn't been told we were there and had been writing a letter to me about non-attendance while I was bloody sat in the waiting room. She said normally she'd gone by this time, was about to go but had stayed for some emails.

Can you fucking believe it. The guy on the desk was a temp and hadn't attempted to check up any of the times I'd asked or relayed the fact I'd arrived. When she quiered him he just sat they saying 'I was only told to check people in, I don't check up'.

I was torn between tears/ rage. I actually sat in the waiting room for over 2 hours with a ratty 5 m/o who wanted a nap as the buses are only every half an hour and we have to be a bit early.

I was so all over the place I barely remebered half the stuff I wanted to say until I was halfway home so not a very productive appointment. Didn't get much out of it bar a few recipes It would have been able to be done on the phone/ by email frankly as ds slept in the buggy throughout. A proper waste of a day off work when I don't need another bloody day off on top of all the others I've had off for him.

REALLY pissed off.

Blimey strawberry. I'm not surprised you're exasperated. Speak to PALS at the hospital (patient liasion). They need to know about the issues.

How is ds?

starfishmummy · 26/11/2010 09:21

That is appalling. Can you ring the dietician's secretary and get another appointment? i don't know where you are located but when my Ds was pre-school the dietician used to vsit us at home - could you ask if that is an option? In my experience of hospitals they advise people with diarrhoea to stay away so maybe you could use that as a reaspn to get a home visit.

strawberrycake · 26/11/2010 10:35

He's not had diarrhoea for the last week, since stopping the anti-biotics (though he had it before).

There's a 4 month waiting list for appointments so no to the extra one.

Just frustrating as I was too stressed to remember things like the fact he's had nappy rash since starting on the new milk. the weight he was at the doctors most recently (not in red book) or much about the cough. Just lemon-like after hours in that waiting room and a screaming child.

On a plus point I finally got him to eat something last night, always refused and screamed if he saw food/ a spoon. Weirdly it was a jar of baby food, stuff the home cooking!

I've booked a gp appointment for monday about the cough.

Just thought I'd update.

Got anti-histamine for the cough, though they've had no impact tbh.

Given up with the hospital (they accidently discharged us too!) but luckily by chance ran into this borough's dietician at the local children's centre. She has immeadiatly recommended Neocate. She reckons 4 weeks on Neocate then a review, if still the same issues reckons we should be referred to pead again. Tried it for a few days and it seems to be going well, if anything he prefers the taste going from 10 to 15 oz a day of milk. Going to GP on Monday to ask for them to prescribe it and dietician has written a letter asking for it so hopefully no issues.

He's lost 2 oz over the last 3 weeks but I think this is teething issues/ starting solids. He does look rather mini now compared to babies of his age. My friends 3 month old is 5lb heavier! Ds is 7 months.

I'm not too worried now though, he's happy and very alert and active. Nearly crawling and sitting without using his hands for support now.

Had a pretty cringe-worty reply phonecall from the dietician. Seemed very annoyed from her tone about my letter, like it was about her, rather than the hospital. Really felt stupid/ embarrassed throughout. Did though help.
