is the temp coming down with calpol?

chibi · 01/11/2010 16:39

Neurofen better for fevers

It can be given with calpol

Are there any other symptoms? Can you call your gp? They will mostly call you back to tell you to come in or not.

Does your child have any other health probs?

scaleymcnamechange · 01/11/2010 16:40

He started off at 38.2 this morning. Since then has had a dose of nurofen, a dose of medised, temp of 39.2 just given another dose of nurofen about 10 mins ago. I don't have any calpol in the house and he's not really well enough to go out although I have to take him out later because I have to pick dd up from somewhere else.

Am flapping.

I think you should phone your local surgery for advice if you are unable to get him there during surgery hours. Have you given him Calpol and plenty to drink?

Blu · 01/11/2010 16:40

What are the other symptoms? i.e what sort of infection is causing the fever?

scaleymcnamechange · 01/11/2010 16:42

Think its his ears. He's complained of headache and his ears feeling bunged up since this morning. But also says he feels sick and has no appetite. He is very sad and miserable.

I disagree. Calpol is much better for temperatures.

You dont say at 39.2c whow long before had you given him meds?
If his temp doesnt come down at all after meds, call someone.
But kids always spike at teatime.

You need to start writing it down when and what dose he has had so you dont give him too much.
Get Dh to bring Calpol home.
Give him a little bit of toast if he can manage it so there is something at least in his tum.

Put him in a bath, not too hot. That will help.

Acanthus · 01/11/2010 16:47

Don't flap, put him in one layer of loose clothing, give him drinks and wait. Yes it will wait 2 hrs .

notanidiotnomore · 01/11/2010 16:48

Sorry you said 10 mins ago. I would see how he is after 30 mins.

"Calpol is much better for temperatures.

Nope. Nurofen medically proven to be more effective in bringing atemperature down, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7592585.stm here and despite almost every parent (inc me) being sure that temperatures, fevers and illnesses are always worse at night, that isn't medically supported either.

CommanderGhoul · 01/11/2010 19:36

Yes was going to say watch the medised/calpol thing - thru both contain paracetamol. Write down times and rises so you and you husband can see - that way you won't overdose him.

Good luck

But it isn't factually correct! Confused

Hope your Ds is recovering, scaleyMc.

naughtymummy · 02/11/2010 18:49

Hi , im a paediatric doctor 39 is no cause for concern on its own especially if its coming down, with ibroprofen. Agree with poster who said recheck in 30 mins. Also if he is 7 he can have 200mg neurofen ( i think thats 10mls) and 500mg paracatamol. To bring the fever down. I would worry if he developed vomiting or a rash. Good luck, hope he feels better soon

Mamalade · 02/11/2010 19:56

Don't you mean Ibuprofen?

MarniesMummy · 02/11/2010 19:57

Strip them naked, cold baths if temperature keeps rising.

naughtymummy · 02/11/2010 20:02

Yes sorry typo. Be careful with cold baths bringing temp down too quickly can be dangerous and unkind .

MarniesMummy · 02/11/2010 20:04

Yes.
Also i meant strip them naked.

Cold bath if temp keeps rising.

I think you could probably sponge with cool water before a cold bath.

bubbleymummy · 02/11/2010 20:46

Not cool water! Use tepid water - cold water is too much of a shock and can cause shivering which warms the body up - not what you are trying to achieve! Keep him lightly covered (cotton blanket?)so he is warm and comfortable but not overheated.

Bobbiesmum · 03/11/2010 22:05

Marmalade, ibuprofen is the same thing as neurofen, just in case anyone is confused.

MmeLindt · 03/11/2010 22:12

I often post a link to this blog and can only advise you to print it out, stick it in the medicine cabinet and glance at it occasionally. It gives advice on when to seek medical treatment when your DC have a fever.

please NO COLD BATHS. This is dangerous advice.

If in doubt call your GP.

How is your DS now, Scaley? My pediatrician advised that if temp goes over 40 degrees and / or does not respond to meds, to seek medical advice.
