QUICK-would you give Calpol?

DD woke up from nap with over 40 degrees fever. I gave her paracetamol, she's fine now, good mood and no or v.low fever.

Her bedtime is in 30 minutes and it would also be the time for next dose of Calpol.

Do I give it to her even though she's got no fever at the moment, just so she doesn't wake up with 41 degrees in the middle of the night?

Or do I leave it and hope she'll be alright?

I would give it.

oldenoughtowearpurple · 18/10/2010 20:11

If she is otherwise well I personally wouldnt, if she is under the weather I would. Personally.

TeaCrawledOutFromUnderRocks · 18/10/2010 20:11

I'd wait - Calpol won't last all night anyway, so if she's going to be up, she's going to be up!

How old?

ThatDamnDog · 18/10/2010 20:12

I'd give it to be honest, rather than have the struggle in the night if she feels unwell again.

thisisyesterday · 18/10/2010 20:13

i would give it

TrinityRhino · 18/10/2010 20:14

I would give it

greensnail · 18/10/2010 20:15

I would give it

nickytwotimes · 18/10/2010 20:17

Yep

colditz · 18/10/2010 20:17

Give it.

IMoveTheStars · 18/10/2010 20:17

Yes, I would give it, if anything to help her get some decent sleep if she is a little under the weather (which she obviously is if her temp is 40C)

goodmanners · 18/10/2010 20:19

i would.

winnybella · 18/10/2010 20:21

Thank you all Smile

Jareth- no, now she's cool tp tpuch, she had an over 40 degrees fever about 4 hours ago, gave her calpol, it came down reasonably quickly.

She seems totally fine at the moment, but I would like her (and me) to get some sleep- don't want her waking up in 3 hrs with high fever.

She's 20 mo.

So it's ok to give calpol even when there's no fever? I mean, duh, I guess, it's a pain reliever as well, isn't it.

Just posted on your other thread.

Yes, I would give it too. Since her temp was so high, it could go up again in the night.

IMoveTheStars · 18/10/2010 20:25

Sorry, I meant if her temp was 40C.

How has she been in herself? One dose of calpol isn't going to do any harm and will most likely make her feel better and help her get a decent sleep. Might just be teeth, migth be something else brewing... there's a lot of weird bugs around at the moment (DS had a virus recently and was not himself, but other than a temp he had no other symptoms)

DanceOnTheDarkSide · 18/10/2010 20:27

I personally wouldn't. I would save the dose (IYSWIM) until she woke in the night.

winnybella · 18/10/2010 20:28

Ok, will give her calpol.

Thanks all.

if it's been 4 hours, then yes definitely.

heymango · 18/10/2010 20:29

I would give it and have some Ibruprofen ready for the middle of the night.

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 18/10/2010 20:30

Give it.

And you can alternate with ibuprofen if the fever persists tomorrow.

My DS drank a third of a bottle of calpol (on DH's watch I hasten to add). We rang NHS direct in a panic, and spoke to our GP out of hours and although NHS direct dithered around, the GP told us straight that it would do him no harm at all. He was under 2 at the time.

She will sleep better and the rest will then help fever keep at bay. Better that than waking in a frenzy and high fever middle of the night - no good for her or you.

goodmanners · 18/10/2010 20:33

I was told not to give ibuprofen in middle of night as on empty tummy it would irritate so i generally give ibuprofen before bed then calpol in middle of night if it wears off .

winnybella · 18/10/2010 20:33

Haven't got any ibuprofen- calpol was fine in bringing the fever down, so hopefully it'll work in the night.

LauraNorder · 18/10/2010 20:36

Do you have any ibruprofen? I would give that, it's better for relieving fever, if not then stick to the calpol but remember although it's 4 hourly it can only be given 4 times in 24 hrs.

Hope she feels better soon, there are some horrible bugs going around at the moment. Sad

goodmanners · 18/10/2010 20:42

i only mentioned ibuprofen as it lasts upto 8 hrs so more sleep for you. Hope she is well and you both get some good kip Smile

Conundrumish · 18/10/2010 23:16

We also only give Ibuprofen on a full or slightly full stomach (have been known to give them milk and a biscuit in the night for that purpose).

winnybella · 18/10/2010 23:26

I'll go and get some ibuprofen tomorrow, just in case.

Shall I see the doctor tomorrow if she wakes up with fever? Even if she's coping well with it? Could be just a random viral thing, but could be ear infection maybe? Although I didn't see her pulling on her ears.

DP is leaving for 3 days very early tomorrow and I have no family around- I could do with my mother now!
