HOW MUCH DOES YOUR TWO YEAR OLD BOY WEIGH?

Shocked to discover that ds weighs 36lbs. Is this too much? He has asthma and we were at his check up the other day wehn they mentioned that it's a lot for a boy of nearly two (turns two next week) Absolutely loves his food, very good eater (obviously!) but all healthy stuff eaten but now I'm thinking that I need to reduce what he eats, I don't think he look fat as such, definitely sturdy and not skinny. He's 86cm btw, just wondered really about other's boys?

So about 16kg? I would guess he's at the top of the centiles (DS is 15kg and almost 3, but he's about 92cm, so not much taller than your DS) but I wouldn't expect it to put him in the overweight range.

Someone will be along soon with the NHS BMI for children chart... have you had a look in his red book to see what centile his height and weight are on?

Jic · 17/10/2010 00:24

yes about 16kg

i think they told me he is on the 100th centile but im crap at all this chart stuff never understood it

hoping he evens out soon! he can't go on like this.... thanks for reply

If he's following the same line on his chart then I wouldn't worry tbh. DS has followed just above or just below the 50th centile since birth, one of his friends is on the 9th, another friend is on the 90th. They don't actually look much different tbh, and they're all normal.

What kind of food does your DS eat? if he loves his food and he's eating healthy stuff then I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.

winnybella · 17/10/2010 00:54

How tall is he?

Jic · 17/10/2010 00:55

well he has cereal for breakfast, a snack of fruit mid morning then for lunch it;s something like pasta or a sandwich and yoghurt then whtever we're having at dinner time which always includes veg which he loves thankfully i think it's the amounts actually not the food itself i must be giving him too much maybe and he's obviously used to that amount now. is that along the lines of what your ds eats?

OP posts:
Jic · 17/10/2010 00:56

he's 86 cm

winnybella · 17/10/2010 01:00

Hmm. DD is 20mo, 86 cm and 13.5 kg- slim, a bit podgy, but not fat iyswim, just roundish. Depends on the built I guess, but if she was 3 kg more, she would be v.round indeed.

If he's on a 100 centile for weight, but not for height, then he may weigh a bit too much.

IMoveTheStars · 17/10/2010 01:03

Seriously I wouldn't worry, he could be due an enormous growth spurt, he could just be loving his food.

If you are concerned then just make sure he doesn't have any processed crap or cakes/sweets (doesn't sound like he has that anyway) and I'm sure he'll be fine. Maybe ease up on things like cheese (as long as he's getting plenty of calcium elsewhere)

I wish my DS ate as well as yours... He never eats fruit or veg unless their disguised, and he won't eat pasta, cheese, eggs, pizza, anything in sauce... nightmare.

he'll have readybrek with homemade fruit puree, snack is a organix fruit bar thing, lunch is always peanut butter sandwiches, no snacks in the afternoon and dinner is meat, veg and mash with hidden veg.

Jic · 17/10/2010 01:04

yes that's the thing winnybella he is average for height which made me think that if he was above average for height then there wouldn't be a worry...

I wouldn't worry if he was always high on the growth centiles - how much did he weigh at birth?

DS was always on the 9th centile from birth - he still is. Nearly 3 and still only weighs 13kg (2 stone).

I have a boy who will be 2 on 3 Nov.

He weighs 41 lbs.

He is 3ft., 4.5 in.

He has a 7-year-old sister who only weighs 10lbs. more, but she is a foot taller.

He is solid and sturdy.

Jic · 17/10/2010 01:10

jareth
i had a bad eater first time around with dd so i think ds has been a complete pleasure to feed and i may have got carried away with that

saying that he was pretty big from birth, i remember he was 17lbs at three months excl bf until 7 months, ironically didn't have the slightest bit of interest in starting solids until around then

poor you it's a nightmare when they just won't eat- especially pasta! we have that a lot (maybe that's the problem?) they certainly won't starve themselves though

expat

My 7-year-old was such a bad eater she was referred to and saw a dietician.

Now, she eats for Scotland, but she is skinny as a rake.

Her father is, too, age 33.

Her paternal grandmother is 5ft., 11in. and thin as a rake, age 68. DH's brother is a rake, 6ft., 5in., age 34.

People on that side are tall, thin rakes.

I am not tall myself, but I've never had a weight problem.

My boy is very tall for his age. He wears clothes for a 3-year-old. He is happy and full of energy and his weight is not too much for his great height, although over the average (so is his height), so I don't worry, tbh.

winnybella · 17/10/2010 01:18

Expat- over 1m? 2 yo?

expatinscotland · 17/10/2010 01:20

He is 3ft., 4.5in., yes.

When both he and his elder sister were born they were 24 inches long, but he was 9lbs., 5oz. and she 7lbs., 1oz.

winnybella · 17/10/2010 01:22

Wow. That's off the charts.

DS is 8 and off the charts, but somehow at 2 it seems...well, more impressive. I think DS was around 100 % when little and now is way above that line.

expatinscotland · 17/10/2010 01:23

We ran into his old HV yesterday, and she was with her family. He ran to her for a cuddle and she said, 'Here is my boy! The size of a 3-year-old!'

And yet, this is one boy about 8 months older who dwarfs him.

Their father is a mamoth Scotsman, 6ft., 4in. and of big build, although a major athlete. Their mother herself is 5ft., 10in., but she is of much smaller frame so you forget how tall she is.

And both he and his brother are huge.

DD1, the tall 7-year-old, used to play with boy/girl twins a year younger than she, before they moved to London, who had a 6ft., 5in. German father and 5ft., 11in. English mother. And the girl was the size of DD1 and the boy even taller.

winnybella · 17/10/2010 01:24

OMG, 60 cm when born? I've never heard of any baby that long.

Jic · 17/10/2010 01:24

thanks for replies everyone, going to see how it goes, and hope he starts to get taller in the near future, otherwise if he keeps going like this he'll be v v rounded shall we say!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 17/10/2010 01:26

DD1 is 4ft and about 4.75 in., winny.

Her legs are like giraffes and my folks send all her clothes from the US, where people tend to be taller on average.

My sister's elder daughter was 6ft., 1in. by the age of 14, but she stopped growing then.

Her 13-year-old sister is 'only' 5ft., 9in. and 6ft., 5in. BIL kids her as 'the shrimp'.

winnybella · 17/10/2010 01:27

I wonder if they stay tall iyswim. For girls it seems the start of puberty might slow down/stop the growth, but for boys? I'm 5'8" and DS's father's 5'11", but DS (if to believe the charts) is predicted to be 6'5".

expatinscotland · 17/10/2010 01:28

You haven't? Winny, they're a dime a dozen in the US. My niece was, too. 8lbs., 2oz and 24 inches long.

She's 6ft., 1in. now and appears to have stopped growing.

But in hospital there were others like her.

She was born in the US. A lot of mixed-raced people there who are long.

Check the stats for the Oxford and Cambridge crew teams, they are full of giants from the US and E. Europe or Germany/Scandanavia.
