OMG what the hell do I do with this announcement from ds?

DS1 has just announced he has had a shower because he was smelly. I was thinking it may be time for deodorant. He then says "I think I might have cancer."

He has a pain in his tummy, just above his penis, and for a while now can't always get to the loo in time to do a poo.

Is this saying GP GP GP to you?

He is 9.

Try not to worry, but do book an appointment with the GP just to be on safe side

MathsMadMummy · 26/07/2010 17:45

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. could just be a bug? Won't hurt to get him to the doctor though.

coventgarden · 26/07/2010 17:47

He would be mortified if I took him to the doctor because he is pooing in his pants. But I will if he is ill obviously. DH thinks he is just lazy. What would the doctor do?

ds1 is 9 and has had major pooing issues for a year or so... we've not had pooing in pants but apparently that is very common if they've suffered from chronic constipation, ie very large hard infrequent poos..., basically the anal sphincter can become very loose so they can't hold it in (sorry TMI).

gp told me this is a very common problem with boys of this age. so yes i'd get him to gp if any of this is along right lines. apologies if not!

TheCrackFox · 26/07/2010 17:52

I would take him to the GP.

IMO ( I have no medical qualifications so feel free to ignore) it sounds like he is chronically constipated which is leading to leakage.

Stool Soiling and Constipation in Children

This can be treated.

But regardless a child that has been reliably toilet trained for some time and is now having accidents should see a GP.

I just spoke to him. He said yesterday it was in bits and today was runny. He also said sometimes he was just too busy to go.

OP posts:
TheCrackFox · 26/07/2010 17:57

If it is constipation it there can be impacted faeces and the poo can leak past it. Often without warning.

He needs to go to the GP.

MathsMadMummy · 26/07/2010 17:59

I still think it's worth seeing a dr, no matter what the problem is. men especially have trouble seeing a dr about embarrassing problems so the sooner he gets over this the better IMO! anyway, surely if he's that worried, just ignoring it and not seeing a dr will make it worse.

coventgarden · 26/07/2010 18:01

Just rung but can't see a doctor until the 13th or a nurse until the 5th.

Going to try and ring in the morning and get an appointment tomorrow.

OP posts:
coventgarden · 26/07/2010 18:02

If he is constipated does that mean he can't poo? And what am I doing wrong with his food that has caused this?

Thank you, I will take a look now.

Is there a walk in centre at your local hospital you could get him to sooner ?

coventgarden · 26/07/2010 19:28

No, there isn't but I will take him to the pharmacist tomorrow as they are usually pretty good with children's health concerns.

OP posts:
SingleMumAndProud · 26/07/2010 19:51

I think that you need to take him to a proper doctor. He must be really concerned himself and if you take him to a doctor and they say he is fine, then he wil probably at least stop worrying.

If he thinks he has cancer, he must be very stressed about it.

thisisyesterday · 26/07/2010 19:55

yes i would absolutely take him to a doctor!!!

he has come to you and said that he is in pain, is soiling himself and he thinks he has cancer

and your dh accuses him of being lazy? nice

you need to go to the doctors to check out what is causing the pain, if there is a physical reaason for him not managing to get to the toilet and to reassure him!

colditz · 26/07/2010 19:57

I would take him to a walk in centre or, if you don't have one, an A & E. Idealy you owuld see a octor tomorrow but this is not an ideal world and you MUST get him some proper medical treatment.

It sounds like he is HORRIBLY constipated and must be very uncomfortable, poor child.

colditz · 26/07/2010 20:00

he doesn't need to see a pharmacist, he probably needs a suppository. he DEFINITELY needs to see a doctor.

If you don't get this looked at by a medical professional, it could damage his lower intestine - in fact, it sound like some damage has already been done if he can't hold himself long enough to get to the toilet. If it carries on he may need a colostomy bag to give his lower colon chance to heal itself.

he must have medical attention.

coventgarden · 26/07/2010 20:00

No need for the [hm]] thisisyesterday. DH thought he was being lazy before he knew how upset ds was.

I am sure you are not meaning to make me feel a crap mother but he hasn't complained of pain more than once and only had 2 days of dirty pants after a long while without them.

I will be ringing the doctors at 8 tomorrow.

OP posts:
wb · 26/07/2010 20:04

Well, I may be a crap mother but I wouldn't dream of A&E for something like this, I'd go to the GP. Which is what you are doing.

As she cannot see the GP until the 5th, the GP is not an appropriate solution for the problem.

I can't see a gp until the 5th for a pre-booked appointment but as I have said I will ring tomorrow at 8 for an appointment tomorrow.

He is fine, he hasn't mentioned any pain today and only told me about his accident because I asked him why he had showered at 6pm.
