We have a set of Roald Dahl, or maybe Harry Potter?

Takver · 09/07/2010 17:34

Do you have an MP3 player? We've got the Little Princess, Wizard of Oz and Marvellous Land of Oz all downloaded from Librivox (free out of print books read by volunteers). DD (now 8) liked all of them age 5 (she still likes them now, too).

If you look at children's audio books on Amazon there are some good ones - the Roald Dahl sets are great and there is a nice Puffin CD - Stories for Five-Year Olds. It is worth checking the Book People/Red House/Banana Books websites regularly - sometimes they have bargain CDs but do sell out quickly! Collections of Roald Dahl, Just William, and Puffin Classics have all been offered cheaply. Libraries usually have very good audio books for children - including BBC dramatisations, which are great for long journeys.

Paddington bear - read by Stephen Fry, they are truly fabulous.

teamcullenIsaGleek · 10/07/2010 14:00

The book people have great deals on audio books. DS got 10 Roald Dahl stories for £18.

DD loved listening to The early Harry Potter's at this age and is still listening to them now. Stephen Fry reads great

Winnie the Pooh goes down well here - DS enjoys them on CD even though he will not listen to the books at home. And DD (10) still loves them.

CindyHamilton · 19/07/2010 17:06

Enid Blyton's 'The Magic Faraway Tree' series is brilliant, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere I've looked
X Cindy

The Diary of The Killer Cat, by Anne Fine, read by Jack Dee. Its very funny, and a good one for a long car journey [we did 5 hours to C'wall and it was such a favourite that we HAD to listen to it several times over!]. We all enjoyed it as Jack Dees dry humour fits wonderfully. 10 out of 10 for this one.

I second The Diary of a Killer Cat, and DS also loves You're a Bad Man, Mr Gum. This BBC recording of fairy stories also kept him fairly quiet. There are four more stories on this, also by the BBC. On both CDs half the stories are read by Lenny Henry and the other half by Sheridan Smith, and I found her voice a bit annoying by the fourth time through.

taffetacatski · 28/07/2010 15:07

yy to Roald Dahl

DC's (4,6) fave ones BFG and the Twits. The Twits, read by Simon Callow, is amazing. He narrates in his luvverly darling voice and then switches to both Mr and Mrs Twit effortlessly. DS had difficulty believing it was the same person.....

They also really like the Lion King, Cat in the Hat series.

We are driving to France on Friday and have splashed out on Just So Stories read by Johnny Morris, some French learning stuff and this Fairy Tales one

FreddoBaggyMac · 29/07/2010 09:31

Diva has your DD listened to 'The naughtiest girl in school' audio books? My two DDs (4 and 6) are mad about them and virtually know all four CDs off by heart! This is the first one. When I first bought it for DD1 a couple of years ago she wandered around everywhere with her little ELC MP3 player listening to it over and over again for about a week... My older DD also likes the dramatised Secret Seven CDs http://www.amazon.co.uk/Well-Done-Secret-Seven-Trail/dp/1844562727/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=12 80392133&sr=1-1 but the younger one finds them a bit scary.
This is also a very nice one with stories that are a bit different.

FreddoBaggyMac · 29/07/2010 09:38

Sorry this is the secret seven link done properly! Also just remembered that DD1 likes the Worst Witch ones too, here

mankyscotslass · 29/07/2010 09:46

We have Harry Potter. I love it too, we usually listen on the trip to Scotland.

Stephen Fry brings it to life.

BooKangaWonders · 29/07/2010 09:52

yy to all Roald Dahl - the book people often have the set. And second Harry Potter, but not for op's 5 yr old.

We borrow loads from the library - sometimes just picking one at random has been a great way of getting into a new author.

(have only ever left 1 cd in the rental car! but we got it back!)

SatinandTat · 29/07/2010 23:16

We used to love the Sophie series by Dick King Smith read by Bernard Cribbens. I loved them because I thought Sophie was such a strong and determined girl.

jennifersofia · 29/07/2010 23:24

My dd used to love the Doctor Doolittle books read by Alan Bennett (several tapes), and The Secret Garden read by Helena Bonham Carter.

shockers · 29/07/2010 23:38

We have a tin of Roald Dahl CDs from the book people... I think it was about £20. We've had it for about 4 years and they're the only story CDs that my children ask for on a regular basis in the car.

DH loves "Danny Champion of the World" the best too .

dearprudence · 29/07/2010 23:44

Winnie the Pooh - there are loads of lovely versions. The Alan Bennett one is abridged, or there's an unabridged version read by Bernard Cribbins, and another that's part-narrated and part-acted with really top actors. Harry Potter is great, but better for slightly older children.

bran · 30/07/2010 16:38

We have the Bernard Cribbins version of Winnie the Pooh and it went down like a lead balloon. He has quite a dreary voice.

MissM · 01/08/2010 21:10

Winnie the Pooh read by Alan Bennett and Paddington. They keep my kids quiet for hours (and Alan Bennett is so fantastic I don't mind hearing the same stories over and over again). Mine also enjoy general fairy tale collections.
