There's this one chapter which I can barely read out lot to my dc's because I'm trying so much. Do you have any of those?

It's a book by Astrid Lindgren (I think it's called Emil in English) and this little boy through some superhuman efforts manages to save his parents' servant's life. I read it to my dd1 a few months ago and was sobbing all the way through it, tonight I read it to dd2 and did it again.

Don't know the book, but I am the same when reading a book called 'Let's get a Pup' to the dds

I get v v teary, it's very embarassing

They laugh at me

Shaz10 · 30/03/2010 20:25

I've never read it out loud but cried my eyes out at Watership Down.

emkana · 30/03/2010 21:30

My voice also cracks when I read the one about the mole and the bird - do you know which one I mean?

Don't remember that particular bit - are you sure it's Emil? He only gave me tears of laughter - Emil and his piglet getting drunk on the fermented cherries from the cherry wine; Emil hoisting his little sister up the flagpole so she could have a good view around; stuck with his head in the soup terrine

I would cry if I tried reading the last page of the Brothers Lionheart out loud.. still a few years until DDs are grown up enough

Anything by Martin Waddell had me in floods!

emkana · 30/03/2010 21:40

Yes it's definitely Emil - I agree it's very funny, but the last chapter of the whole series is about Emil saving Alfred (that's what he's called in the German version anyway) - Alfred cuts his finger and it develops into an infection, but the farm is snowed in and they can't get him to a doctor, Emil/Michel very upset so in the early hours gets horse and sledge out and manages to get Alfred to the doctor just in time.

I remember now - I can see the pictures in my mind.. definitely crying material. Poor Alfred and very brave Emil/Michiel (his Dutch name).. I used to watch the TV series when I was little, fabulous stuff

Love you forever. Damn that book

We like to booby-trap visiting family by letting them read this to the boys at bedtime [cruel]

Never fails!!

(I love you forever, I like you always, as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be...aaaahhhhh)

dearprudence · 30/03/2010 21:54

Guess How Much I Love You.
Have literally never been able to read this aloud without crying. I think it's the fact it's a daddy, and he's so tender with the little hare at the end.

hellymelly · 30/03/2010 22:00

Oh I can't read the one that goes "I'll love you forever,I'll like you for always,as long as I'm living my baby you'll be..."my dds say "why are you crying Mummy?"

seeker · 30/03/2010 22:03

And that one about Giants in Our House!

DinahRod · 30/03/2010 22:04

The Sunshine Cat - about a much treasured cat, knocked down and killed and the children's coping for the first time with death. Can't read it for crying, dd loves it. The gps let the children choose any book from a library book sale and this was dd's choice.

seeker · 30/03/2010 22:07

Oh, God. Forgot about "Goodbye Mog"

JustKeepSwimming · 30/03/2010 22:09

There's a silly bit in Dogger that give me a catch in my throat every time

MoominmammasHandbag · 30/03/2010 22:09

Very wet I know, but "Dogger", when Bella does the "very kind thing".

castille · 30/03/2010 22:09

The last chapter of Winnie the Pooh always does it for me, when Christopher Robin and Pooh go to a Special Place and CR tells Pooh he's leaving to go off to school and it's all so damn poignant.

MoominmammasHandbag · 30/03/2010 22:10

Oooh JustKeepSwimming we are having a bit of a telepathic momment

treacletart · 30/03/2010 22:11

Once There Were Giants gets me every time

hellymelly · 30/03/2010 22:14

Oh yes,a friend has once there were giants and handed it to me and I howled!DH cried too,he can't read "I'll love you forever"either.

DramaInPyjamas · 30/03/2010 22:15

'No Matter What' by Debi Gliori.

Daughter has brought it home twice from nursery as her library book.
There's a line that goes something like - "Will you still love me when I'm dead and gone?"

Couldn't stop hugging her and had to stop myself crying while reading it. It's a really lovely story though.

Sazisi · 30/03/2010 22:15

Oh god, yes, Dogger - it's Bella who gets me every time too!

I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird with DD1 (she is nearly 11 but still likes the one-to-one time at bedtime) and sobbed through the bit where the jury come back with the verdict DD was all "it's okay mum, it's only a story"

JustKeepSwimming · 30/03/2010 22:16

LOL Moomin - that's the bit

SleepingLion · 30/03/2010 22:17

Much more embarrassing, I nearly cried when reading the end of Brother in the Land to a Yr 7 class I was teaching. Similarly have had tears in my eyes when watching the end of Gallipoli with a class.

taffetacat · 30/03/2010 22:23

Guess How Much I Love You
Owl Babies

and............this is sooo embarrassing.....his flipping ORT Biff Chip etc book he brought home today "Pocket Money".

I used to be a successful hard nosed professional. I am now a blubbering wreck. I am an embarrassment.
