There's this one chapter which I can barely read out lot to my dc's because I'm trying so much. Do you have any of those?

It's a book by Astrid Lindgren (I think it's called Emil in English) and this little boy through some superhuman efforts manages to save his parents' servant's life. I read it to my dd1 a few months ago and was sobbing all the way through it, tonight I read it to dd2 and did it again.

Oh I'm the same Ingles2! I remember Kylie reading it on Radio 1 a few years back. I was in the car. I had to pull over...

cornsilk · 01/04/2010 09:41

The bit at the end of Kensuke's kingdom where he says goodbye to Kensuke.

cornsilk · 01/04/2010 09:42

The velveteen rabbit where he gets put out for the fire. Had to change it when I read it to ds1 as he'd have been devastated.

I read Dogger to dd (2.7) for the first time a couple of months ago and she was awestruck by the very kind thing

it was one of those moments I'll remmeber long after she';s forgotten

Horton · 01/04/2010 14:28

Oh yes, The Snail and the Whale is terribly terribly weepy in a happy kind of way.

RedTartanLass · 01/04/2010 14:49

wrinklyraisin aww yes the Tin Soldier makes me sob, but not as much as the Little Match Girl Ahhhhh

LittlePushka · 01/04/2010 20:58

read Dogger tonight! must say that i agree that the big bear really does have inordinately stary eyes....I'd say Bella & Dave are very well rid!!!

Horton? S & W weepy? Nah! Surely not!

HerBeatitude · 01/04/2010 21:00

Oscar Wilde's children's stories. The selfish giant and the happy prince particularly.

When DD was a few months away from starting school my lovely friend bought her Charlie & Lola "I am absolutely too small for school" and the bit where Charlie can't find Lola on her first day still chokes me up

Horton · 01/04/2010 21:45

S & W weepy? Nah! Surely not!

Oh yes, really weepy, because of the tininess of the snail and how brave it is and all of that. I think I am permanently in pregnancy hormone land as far as crying goes!

poorbuthappy · 01/04/2010 21:52

whispers so glad someone else feels the same about GHMILY. I only bought it last year after hearing so much about it, and I feel awful that it doesn't touch me...but slightly better about that now!

Princess Poppy and the Twins upsets me...when she sits in her room on her own with her ear muffs on so she can't hear the twins crying...I just think of DD1 posibly doing this when the twins were teeny tiny...

AngryPixie · 01/04/2010 22:08

Worse than not loving GHMILY is loathing the ghastly 'love you forever'

And the world's creepiest MIL award goes to......FFS she breaks into her adult sons house to cradle and sing to him whilst he is sleeping beside his wife! Just imagine the AIBU thread the poor DIL could start!

hazeyjane · 01/04/2010 22:14

The thing that chokes me up about that quote from 'the snail and the whale', is that when I first read that line, I just thought, that is exactly how I feel about the world.

It is such a beautifully written book.

zippy539 · 01/04/2010 22:16

Love You Forever - it's a killer. We only get it out about once a year because I weep like a baby.

zippy539 · 01/04/2010 22:17

Yes - is WEIRD when she breaks into her sons house. But we'll let that lie...

zippy539 · 01/04/2010 22:18

Only letting it lie because I can imagine breaking into my son's house when he is 35 and shoving his wife out of the bed onto the stone cold floor so I can give my bubbah a cuddle.

Nightmare MIL? Moi?

sundew · 01/04/2010 22:21

My weepy is 'what colour is love' although I agree 'No matter what' also chokes me up.

A more serious kids book that makes me sad is 'for every child' which is the unicef rights of the child in words and pictures.

Botbot · 01/04/2010 22:27

We currently have Goodbye Mog from the library. I haven't dared read it to dd yet, after leafing through it on my own with tears running down my face.

DebiNewberry · 01/04/2010 22:29

The Dear Grandma miffy book makes me sob, the bit where Miffy sees her grandpa crying.

CoupleofKooks · 01/04/2010 22:33

the big big sea

TabithaTwitchet · 01/04/2010 22:46

I totally agree about GHMILY, really dislike it, what a relief to be able to come out.

The snail and the whale on the other hand always has me slightly choked up.

Hoping that DD will read her own bedtime story before she moves on to really weepy stuff - there were loads of books that I used to read as a child with silent tears running down my face (Black Beauty, The Railway Children, and I particularly recall a book called Just Nuffin, about a boy and a dog that had me sobbing inconsolably) and that was back when I was a flinty hearted child, rather than a complete wuss of an overemotional parent who tears up at anything

TigerFeet · 01/04/2010 22:48

oh dear i am very very tired and i have had vodka

better hide the thread before dh thinks i've gone completely insane

edam · 01/04/2010 22:59

I can't help gulping when I read the Thomas story 'The Little Lost Engine'. It's about an old steam engine who is left behind when his railway closes down. Not even worth anything for scrap. His driver and fireman have to go away and find other work, so they leave him in his shed, and the the rains wash soil down over the top and everyone forgets there ever was an engine there...

It's especially poignant for me as I know it's true. The real engine is called Prince and he was found by Revd. Awdry, the author of the original Thomas stories.

QQQ · 01/04/2010 22:59

Love You Forever makes me sob so hardly gets read. DH thinks its tosh and refuses to read it so ds doesn't get to hear it much. Owl Babies is lovely but have read it so many times it doesn't move me to tears. There's another that has me choked but dammit can't remember the title must have hidden it at the back of the bookshelf... must investigate.

Clary · 01/04/2010 23:11

Actually Dogger doesn't make me cry because I agree the bear with the blue ribbon is a bit much anyway frankly. I love the book tho.

Cannot believe no-one has mentioned the last but one page of Peepo "and a mother with a baby just like him" can't even type it without crying.
