Good books for a 3 year old boy?

2pt4kids · 06/02/2009 14:28

DS1 loves books, but has become rather attached to the ones he has had a long time and we often find ourselves reading things like 'Thats not my puppy' at bed time as thats what he picks out!

Am thinking I will have a clear out of his book shelf soon, put the baby board books in Ds2's bedroom for him and others downstairs for us to look at in the day and just keep the slightly longer, more bedtime reading ones upstairs in DS1's room.

Any recommendations for ones I can get him to add to his bedtime stories?

I have recently got him 'The tiger who came to tea' and have just ordered the Dr Seuss collection from the Book People (I loved those books when I was younger!)

I'm looking for books that have a paragraph or two of writing on each page rather than just a short sentence iyswim.

Thank you!

2pt4kids · 06/02/2009 14:31

Iklboo · 06/02/2009 14:33

DS likes Harry and His Bucket of Dinosaurs
We've also just started reading classic fairy tales
He also likes lift the flap/pop up/interactive books too

BaDaBing · 06/02/2009 14:34

Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson is fab. The Large Family series are a big hit with my ds and he is also mad on Nick Sharrat books like Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose and Pants.

fishie · 06/02/2009 14:36

night pirates
mog (mog on fox night, mog and bunny, mog and vet, mog's bad thing are all fab, some of them are a bit odd)
i like lauren child but ds doesn't.
chris wormell, george and the dragon and the sea monster. his new frog one is not good.

i get a lot from the library, there are some utterly dreadful books for this age group and it's easy to make a mistake. i think puffin books are usually safe bet, walkers publish some right crap.

bodiddly · 06/02/2009 15:09

nearly forgot ... the Marks and Spencer First Readers range of fairy tales ... ds loves them and they are simple enough that I will use them when he eventually learns to read for himself! They often have them on 3 for 2 offers. He gets something like that for Easter rather than an egg for a couple of pounds. I have found quite a few of them in charity shops as well!

peachface · 06/02/2009 15:26

Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffries is a lovely book
Also the Julia Donaldson/Axel Schaeffer ones - Smartest Giant in Town, Room on the Broom,Monkey Puzzle, Charlie Cook's favourite book

we have the catch a star book by oliver jeffries, i'm going to get the other one mentioned here.

debbi gliori books are lovely. We has one from the library about a little fox and his mummy discussing the nature of love, can't remember the title but twas lovely. we have a nursery rhyme book by her, which is v.popular here.

You Choose is a good book.

in the night kitchen is a firm favourite at bedtime.

sorry for typing, bfeeding baby so typing w/ one hand!

SoMuchToBits · 06/02/2009 17:20

Little Red Train books by Benedict Blathwayt. They have lovely illustrations.

peachface · 06/02/2009 17:39

Oh yes! Benedict Blathwayt's train books are lovely! So much to talk about in the illustrations! Thanks - I'll read one of those stories tonight to my ds!

Stinkyfeet · 06/02/2009 17:42

Firm fave with my almost 3 yr old (and my nearly 6 yr old) is Dig Dig Digging.

Pinky - You Choose is great when they choose different things, but when it's the same night after night after night ..... my, it gets dull!!

curlygal · 06/02/2009 17:53

My DS chooses the same things EVERY time we read you choose too!

DS is three and he loves most of the books mentioned here, esp Little Red train, and Julia Donaldson. He also loves Thomas the tank engine...

We have a lot of books as I get them in charity shops - he still loves "that's not my (fill in the blanks and laugh all the way to the bank) and apparently they are really good for promoting literacy due to the repetition.

I love Helen Cooper Books and Jan Fearnley. Also Shirley Hughes, esp Alfie stories as reckon Alfie is three or four so up to similar stuff to DS!

DS LOVES QPootle% in Space (even though we only recently got the first page - thanks Mn for that!)

NotSoRampantRabbit · 06/02/2009 17:54

DS loves "Stomp Chomp Big Roars, Here Come the Dinosaurs" - lovely and funny poems on each page and plenty of scope for stomping around, baring teeth and being scary. Sorry can't remember who by...

We also got a good book called "Tyrannosaurus Drip" which is by Julia Donaldson and a different illustrator (not Axel Scheffler), which is top of the reading list at the mo.

Second all other suggestions, although Mr Men is dire! (IMO)

Stinkyfeet · 06/02/2009 17:56

curlygal - the worst thing is that ds2 actually ponders over it for ages, before choosing the same things!! Aaaaaargh - it makes me want to tear my hair out!
