DD is 2.7 and I would like to get her some more books with fiesty/non-stereotypical female central characters in. She has one which she adores called "Stella from Earth" about a little girl who blasts off into space and finds some aliens, so I'd like some in a similar vein. Any suggestions please?

www.amazon.co.uk/Olivia-Ian-Falconer/dp/0689834950/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233783932&sr=1-1

More attitude than I would care to face on a daily basis...

Thank you for all the suggestions, I am having trouble choosing which ones to get now.

Vonsudenfed, I forgot that DD had Olivia as her Christmas present from nursery, I couldn't decide if I liked it or hated it!

Another vote for Katie Morag. Plus her Grannie Island is cool and fixes her own tractor. And her mum runs the Post Office (and her dad decorates cakes) 'tis fab.

MilaMae · 05/02/2009 13:28

Madeline is quite fiesty. We have Eloise, I adore Fancy Nancy(she is my dd) but be warned your dd will start calling her dressing gown a peignoir!!!!

We love Katy Morag,Blue Kangaroo and Paperbag Princess too. Just about to dig out my old Amelia Jane Stiggens books.

Habbibu · 05/02/2009 13:48

I find Katie Morag a bit twee, tbh. Love Lila Pirate.

Milly Molly Mandy is not feisty as such but incredibly practical and self-reliant in today's eyes.

Arabel of Arabel's Raven etc. by Joan Aitken has a calm implacability. But pretty much all the adults are barking mad, especially the women.

Both possibly a little long for your DD just yet, but soon.

doggiesayswoof · 06/02/2009 15:26

Katie Morag very popular with dd (she's 4 but we've been reading them for ages)

I hated KM at first but have come round - Grannie Island is a fab character. Plus they are the only children's books I've seen with pictures of someone bfing.

V good old thread on this here

Well I wrote down all the suggestions and decided to be sensible and take the list to the library. The lovely librarian found quite a few for me bless her so we are going to start on those tonight. I even managed to get the Night Pirates.

doggiesayswoof, thank you for the link. The Baby's Catalogue by the Ahlbergs has bfing in, although it has bottles too.

Thanks mimia. I like the Ahlbergs but I've not seen the Baby's Catalogue - will look out for it
