DD is 2.7 and I would like to get her some more books with fiesty/non-stereotypical female central characters in. She has one which she adores called "Stella from Earth" about a little girl who blasts off into space and finds some aliens, so I'd like some in a similar vein. Any suggestions please?

Emily Brown books by Cressida Cowell. She's very straight talking.

ramonaquimby · 04/02/2009 17:12

Paperbag Princess is a good one (Robert Munsch)

Habbibu · 04/02/2009 17:13

And the Night Pirates has a ship crewed and captained by rough, tough, little girl pirates.

compo · 04/02/2009 17:15

Charlie and Lola books

Lizzylou · 04/02/2009 17:15

Just came on to say Night Pirates, my two boys love this.

Lizzylou · 04/02/2009 17:15

Snap Habbibu, posted before I could put that

Habbibu · 04/02/2009 17:17

Oh Lord, compo - I'd rather dd didn't have Lola as a role model! Very harsh, I know - the tv programme just really really bugs me.

Mimia · 04/02/2009 17:19

Thank you for all the suggestions, will be filling a basket on amazon tonight! Although, no offence, but not Lola, I said feisty not annoying

compo · 04/02/2009 17:20

oh sorry, I'll get my coat

Habbibu · 04/02/2009 17:21

I think Lola rather polarises people...

ramonaquimby · 04/02/2009 17:59

I used to really loathe Charlie and Lola, but they've kinda grown on me. Didn't like the look of the books to be honest - it was the TV shows and their voices that won me over

MitchyInge · 04/02/2009 18:01

the naughtiest girl series by enid blyton?

there are at least 3 of those

ramonaquimby · 04/02/2009 18:05

you mean 'Amelia Jane' books I think Mitchy - they are chapter books and I recently bought them for my 4 year old (to read to her, not a child genious!) My 2 year old listens but I think they're a bit beyond her at the moment, think OP is looking for picture books for a 2.7 yr old?

MitchyInge · 04/02/2009 18:07

no but Amelia Jane is fun too!

I mean these ones which are more bedtime chapter books to be fair

ramonaquimby · 04/02/2009 18:08

ohhh - didn't know about those ones. dh will die if I bring anymore books onto our heaving bookcases.....

dizietsma · 04/02/2009 18:15

These are originally American, but my dual nationality feisty 3yo daughter loves 'em-

Fancy Nancy

Ladybug Girl

dizietsma · 04/02/2009 18:17

Ah, these are somewhat stereotypical, though...

ohdearwhatamess · 04/02/2009 19:41

James Mayhew's Katie series?

Very cheap with Red House books atm too.

onehitwonder · 04/02/2009 19:44

What about Pippi Longstocking.

ramonaquimby · 04/02/2009 21:13

keep comign back to this, some great books. The Katie books are fab - we have a few, but not the set. must look

hazeyjane · 04/02/2009 21:29

My 2.11 yr old dd loves anything witchy (fiesty, female and non stereotypical I guess!), The Witches Children and Winnie the Witch books are favourites.

Also Monkey and Me by Emily Gravett

dooit · 04/02/2009 21:38

Reckless Ruby is brilliant. DD1 (Ruby) loved it. The Ruby in the book is the polar opposite of all the usual little girl stereotypes.

Twims · 04/02/2009 21:39

Lila Pirate

AnarchyHeart · 04/02/2009 21:42

Katie Morag is feisty and likes mud and tractors. And sings Ye Cannae Shover Yer Granny Off A Bus

Pippi Longstocking is fabulous.

Paperbag Princess

Princess Smartypants
