My DS will be 8 in March and now has the cpomplete Horrid Henry set. I want to buy him some more books for his birthday as he loves to read, but dont really know what to buy. Can someone help me?

Also, can anyone recommend a good Childrens Science Encyclopedia?

DS2 was a Horrid Henry fan. He loves Roald Dahl and Horrible Histories.

Saltire · 04/02/2009 15:36

DS2 is a Horrid Hnery fan and also like Horrible Histories, captain underpants, Roald Dahl

claricebean · 04/02/2009 15:38

Mr Gum? DD1, who is 8, loves them. I'd say they have as much, if not more, appeal to boys.

SoMuchToBits · 04/02/2009 15:38

Ds enjoyed the Jeremy James books by David Henry Wilson. They are all available in paperback from Amazon.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/02/2009 15:38

Where to begin - there's so many when they hit this age!

Does he have any Roald Dahls yet (can often get boxed sets cheap from The Book People). If you go to their website you can look at what's recommended by age.

morethanjustadad · 04/02/2009 15:42

Captain Underpants and his crew.

My DS has them all and even though there is some dodgy English in it (dodgy as in don't let the pedants near them) he devours them. Teachers have commented that "anything that gets an 8 year old boy reading" is a boon. And just in case you worry that they will distract him, my DS reads his Saturday and Sunday newspapers, books on chess, cooking, anything on football, so Capt Underpants doesn't "damage" his reading in anyway.

Subscription to the Beano is surely a good 8th birthday present?

Look out for books by Jeremy Strong, they seem to go down well IIRC

dietstartstomorrow · 04/02/2009 15:47

Another vote for Mr Gum - they are fun books.

morethanjustadad · 04/02/2009 16:28

Actually, the comment re the Beano is a good one...DS insists on spending half of the pcoket money his granny gives him on this and again races through it from cover to cover in an instant!

DaphneMoon · 04/02/2009 16:39

How about the Dirty Bertie books by Alan MacDonald, along the same lines as Horrid Henry.

ilovepeppapig · 05/02/2009 08:26

I had the same problem. first it was horrid henry then he read the roald dahl now my son likes michael morpurgo. Morpurgo does a range of books (some about animals) He does "thin" read yourself stories and thicker books which i read to my son - the same about roald dahl there are thinner books like the enormous crocodile, or the twits or georges marvellos medicine to start with which he could read himself. also we buy "first News" which is a children's magazine.Just got him Flaminals which he loved.

admylin · 05/02/2009 08:52

My dd is 9 and has just read 2 of the Diary of a wimpy kid books. Very funny.

EffiePerine · 05/02/2009 09:22

What about the William books?

bestfriendswithbenefits · 05/02/2009 09:25

Astrosaurs - there's a whole set. Cows in Action, Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, Beast Quest.

Chamomile · 05/02/2009 09:47

I've found at that age they really like series of books because they know what to expect.
I've just bought my 8yr old a set of Jack Stalwart ( the first 8 books are on offer at The Book People just now). He's a 9yr old secret agent who travels the world and Ds2 loves them.
Another favourite is the Beast Quest Series. If he likes them there are 20 of these so that's birthdays sorted for a while!

WealdMa · 05/02/2009 16:51

My eight year old is really enjoying the Vampirates books at the moment. Also loves any of the Horrible Histories/Horrible Science and raced through the Terry Pratchett "Johnny" series (didn't get on with Diggers, Truckers or Wings though).

We have the Dorling Kindersley Science Encyclopedia which is good. Have you got him the Guinness Book Of Records? That has gone down a storm...

ChippyMinton · 05/02/2009 16:53

Jake Cake
Just William
Famous Five/Secret Seven
The Beano (annuals are better value than comics)
Roald Dahl

piximon · 05/02/2009 19:50

I'm loving these suggestions for chapter books to read to ds1 (6 next week). Not sure if these deals are of use:

Captain Underpants books are on special on Red House, free delivery and 10% off if quote PRH10 before midnight fri 6th.
Just William and Beast Quest collections available from schoollink site. HTH someone.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2009 19:53

DSs have both enjoyed Jack Stalwart.

hewlettsdaughter · 05/02/2009 19:58

Another vote for books by Jeremey Strong.

hewlettsdaughter · 05/02/2009 19:59

Sorry, Jeremy Strong.

Milliways · 05/02/2009 20:00

DS loved Jacqueline Wilson's "Cliffhanger" and the sequel.

At 8 he also liked the first Harry Potter.

Takver · 06/02/2009 08:38

Has he tried the How to Train Your Dragon books by Cressida Cowell. DD loves them & they were recommended to her by two 8 year old boys we know . . .

mrsflowerpot · 06/02/2009 08:54

Agree Mr Gum is brilliant. Captain Underpants is in the same vein as Horrid Henry and ds loved them. Roald Dahl is good for this age too I think and you can normally get them as a set from somewhere like the Book People.

Sir Gadabout books - about a useless knight of the Round Table.

DS also really loves the Grk books by Joshua Doder and was recently found reading one under the duvet at 11pm.

AussieLou · 06/02/2009 09:16

Mz favourite book aimed at boys is The Day My Bum Went Psycho. I was reading this on the train about 4 years ago and had to get off as I was laughing so much. There is a sequel called Zombie Bums from Uranus. But the first is so much more funny.
