My personal favourite in the "loveliest" stakes is Lulie the Iceberg. Every time I read it with my dcs we are captivated by the beautiful art work and vibrant colours and the depth and breadth of description of Lulie the Iceberg's journey from the Artic to Antartica as well as the sheer variety of wildlife all beatifully illustrated.

It is a real feel good book and not only entertains and marvels but also sparks questions and discussions with dcs about geography and animals.

Quite the loveliest book I have seen and shared with my dcs......

What is yours?

Kitkatqueen - do you mean by Margaret Mahy?
www.amazon.com/Changeover-Supernatural-Romance-Margaret-Mahy/dp/0140365990/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=book s&qid=1239842199&sr=1-4

If so yes, and one of my first crushes too I really like Margaret Mahy, she's written some excellent picture books too - especially The Lion in the Meadow (all about the power of imagination)

Hi Nooka, yes thats the one - and guess what just had a rummage and its still on my bookshelf somehow its managed to escape a lot of turn outs - guess i'll just put it back on the shelf for a bit longer....

Why it's a good book - been on my bookshelf for 25 odd years, along with many other fine children's books. I probably have at least as many children's books as adult, and that's not counting the books that actually belong to the children I tis particularly nice reading books to them now that I read when I was there age, and it being the actual copy that I read. I remember enjoying reading my parents books in the same way.

Can't you Sleep Little Bear - Martin Waddell. I love the comfort of that book. The first time DH read it to DD I waited for and heard his voice catch at the end.

Never Too Little To Tove, with its cross-species yet dedicated amour, is lovely and entertaining at the same time.

My all time unexpected lump-in-the-throat book is The Dancing Tiger. Gets me every time.

maggiethecat · 04/05/2009 22:50

Grill Pan Eddy by Jeanne Willis/Tony Ross. My toddler loves it - story of a mouse who endears himself to the family whose home he shares. Witty and well illustrated.

I have just fallen in love with "Owen and the Mountain". A little boy goes to stay with his grandad in Wales, in his house overlooking the mountain. Boy asks Grandad if they can go up the mountain, but Granddad says that he is too old and Owen is too little. Next day is all lovely and sunny and Owen persists, so Grandad relents and off they go. Owen inspires Grandad, Grandad helps Owen. They sist and eat their lunch by the stream etc, Granddad carries Owen home when he falls asleep. Lovely strory, lovley illustrations and inspiring to a former mountaineer who can't wait to take her DS hill walking!

I think the Box books are the most amazing kids books - there is currently an offer on the range (StoryBox, AdventureBox and DiscoveryBox) which are great children's books! They are aimed at 3-12 year olds and a they are in line with the national curriculum, they make great learning support tools as well as kids loving them. The current offer is at www.subscription.co.uk/store/displayitem.asp?sid=3340&id=22973&custid=20@05@200851269@8110874 57&setext=magazine

hester · 09/06/2009 21:32

'I love you forever' is the creepiest, wierdest book I have ever read - those scenes when the mother crawls on hands and knees across her grown son's bedroom floor....

Sorry, but it gives me the screaming abdabs.

hester · 09/06/2009 21:34

Now I've skimmed the entire thread - so pleased to see I'm not alone!
