My personal favourite in the "loveliest" stakes is Lulie the Iceberg. Every time I read it with my dcs we are captivated by the beautiful art work and vibrant colours and the depth and breadth of description of Lulie the Iceberg's journey from the Artic to Antartica as well as the sheer variety of wildlife all beatifully illustrated.

It is a real feel good book and not only entertains and marvels but also sparks questions and discussions with dcs about geography and animals.

Quite the loveliest book I have seen and shared with my dcs......

What is yours?

Once there Were Giants by Penny Dale. All about a daughter growing up. I love hearing DH trying to read it to DD - he cries every time

mooseloose · 01/02/2009 21:17

I was going to say my naughty little sister too - i have three boys but they have all adored these stories!

Little Beaver and the Echo

Frasersmum123 · 01/02/2009 21:22

I love 'The Velveteen Rabbit', its the loveliest book ever. I had it as a child and will pass my copy onto my DD.

I also like 'Guess how much I love you' but not in the same way.

AtheneNoctua · 01/02/2009 21:25

Paperbag Princess (American version)

lisalisa · 01/02/2009 21:29

Ooh - the velveteen rabbit is a lovely book - all my kids have really adored it and I have the unabridged version that my mum used to read to me in the 1970@s.

In the Middle of the Night. Always very moving when "someone very old breathes their very last breath", while on another ward in the hospital a baby is born.

princessmel · 01/02/2009 21:35

Peepo - I love the drawings.
Dogger - Reminds ds of his favourite bedtime snuggle
Fox makes friends
Brian and Bob www.amazon.com/Brian-Bob-Tale-Guinea-Pigs/dp/0786819251 - Adorable

bumsqueak · 01/02/2009 21:37

Best one IMHO is "Some dogs do" by Jez Alborough. Just lovely!

Megglevache · 01/02/2009 21:37

"There's a house inside my mummy".

I can't read it as it makes me cry. It's ds's fave book of all time

No Matter What and Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go To Sleep were firm favourites when dd was younger.

We recently read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. It's a beautiful book that had me in tears at times and I would thoroughly recommend it.

redpyjamas · 01/02/2009 21:59

Sorry, but that 'love you forever' just made me crack up laughing. Really loudly. My dd just shouted from the bedroom, "what's so funny mummy?"
Even if I didn't imagine Joey in Friends reading it out at Emma';s first birthday party, it would still have made me laugh. I'm not very sentimental - sorry.
Trying to think of my fav children's picture books....too many possibilities, but we really enjoyed Milly Molly Mandy, Teddy Robinson and Paddington were always hits, as were (and still are) Shirley Hughes books. We also loved the Medici society books, in partlicular for the illustrations.
Agree about 'The Christmas Miracle of Jonathon Toomey' and 'When Jessie came across the sea'. But they don't make me weep.

eekamoose · 01/02/2009 22:12

Sophie And The New Baby - a friend of mine bought it for DD when she was 2.8 years and DS was newborn. It was perfect for DD at that time (especially as in the book the first child is a girl and the second is a boy) and tis all about how mums and dads don't stop loving the first baby when a new baby comes along, even if they seem very busy with the new baby and don't have as much time to play anymore. DD loved that book to bits and still asked for it to be read to her years later when she was well capable of reading it herself.

Thanks for Love you Forever - that's definitely off my list... yuk!

The Elves and the Shoemaker - but only the original Ladybird version, I just love the little shoe shapes that the elves cut out of the leather.

The Flying Postman - num num, what elegant pink ice cream. Unfortunately it's some enormous price on ebay now.

Uncle by J P Martin. This set me up for a lifetime's profligate spending, but at least it's honest in that Uncle has a great time because he's RICH. Unlike many children's books in which people are happy because they are poor.

Megglevache · 03/02/2009 21:43

This is brilliant I'm going to buy some new books this weekend.

oysterpots · 04/02/2009 19:32

I'm not that keen on Peepo - don't you think it's a bit, well, smug? But I love love LOVE Each Peach Pear Plum.

The loveliest of all though is the Moomin book - Who Will Comfort Toffle?

I made the mistake of not reading it first myself before I read it to DS and ended up a blubbering mess. It's just so lovely and sweet and romantic. The last page of The Snail and The Whale always makes my voice go wobbly too

lottiejenkins · 04/02/2009 19:36

Owl Babies..........

muffle · 04/02/2009 19:45

Have we had Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig? I loved it as a child and recently got it again and it's tearjerker central and so lovely. It's about a donkey who finds a magic pebble that can grant wishes, but he foolishly turns himself into a rock and then can't speak and can't turn himself back. His parents miss him so much and are distraught, then one day they go for a picnic and end up sitting on the rock and saying "I wish Sylvester was back with us" and the magic pebble is of course nearby and he reappears

OK it sounds mostly sad but it's funny too and has lovely pics. I think it's my all-time fave.

wideratthehips · 04/02/2009 19:55

i always get the sniffles when i read peepo.....i love the little world that the baby is in and the simplicity of the important things, even though obviously there is a war going on in the back ground and daddy has a military uniform.....was unaware of a smug angle....do tell?!

muffle · 04/02/2009 19:59

I always burst into tears at peepo when it gets to the "landing mirror, with its rainbow rim" and the daddy is going away to war but has done the baby's bathtime before he sets off... I don't think it's smug either.

SheherazadetheGoat · 04/02/2009 20:01

Barbie Fairytopia The Magic of the Rainbow is a beautiful book that works on so many levels i will be reading it to dd every day until she leaves home.
