Do you cry whilst reading to the children?

I just read The Story of Holly and Ivy (Rummer Godden) to my children (5 and 3) and burst into tears. I do get very into the reading and I loved it when I was a child. Maybe due to recent bereavements (parents) or just being older and a parent myself - or being a sentimental nutter - but have you sobbed openly due to being moved by a story you are reading to your children? How did they react? What did you say?

My daughter was concerned and sweet, my son thought it was hilarious but was also very sweet and tried to get me to read the same bit over and over to see if it kept happening. All in all I think it added something!

I did the same thing reading The Diddakoi (when the Does were going to send Joe to the knackers). Must stop with Rummer Godden!

Bless you!
ds is only 2, but I do well up at Lost and Found at certain times of the month.

Fubsy · 20/11/2008 20:54

All the time - especially as we are now sharing books that really meant something to me when I was younger!

I do when I read Monkey Puzzle when the little monkey finds his Mum

I also sing to them and have got most of my tearful songs well in hand due to repetition now. But just started with Christmas carols and one line of 'the hopes and fears of all the years are me in thee tonight' or similar and...here I go again! God forbid I remember all the words to Puff the Magic Dragon or Sunrise Sunset. They'll think I've gone mad!

or even 'are met in thee'. Sheesh.

I once cried reading a book o twins I used to nanny for, it was an Alfie and Annie Rose one I think, their neighbours cat dies and he is really depressed about it, its so sad!

Bink · 20/11/2008 20:58

I told (not read - did a summary out of my head) ds & dd (9 and just 8) the story of A Christmas Carol over a few school runs (we walk) and we'd got near the end. Then while we were queueing with the whole of the local known world to drop dd off at her ballet school performance they insisted on hearing how it finished.

I wept. In front of, oh, 200 people. Ds and dd said it was all right and had I a hankie.

Owl Babies, Guess How Much I Love You, How To Catch A Star, Small.... I spend my evenings in a snotty, teary mess while my dd pats me soothingly and asks, "Are you better now, Mummy?"

JackieNo · 20/11/2008 21:00

Oh yes - the bit in the sophie books where her great aunt dies . And lots of others.

StopSittingOnTheBabyPlease · 20/11/2008 21:00

I read "There's a house inside my mummy" over and over to DD1 whilst pregnant with DS. It's recently been rediscovered and there's definitely a quiver in my voice.

Also agree with Monkey Puzzle "...Mum!" sniff sniff

Pawslikepaddington · 20/11/2008 21:00

I cried at Dogger and had to stop reading. Cry at all her films too, and had such a sudden loud outburst of crying at Wall-E the whole cinema laughed.

Pawslikepaddington · 20/11/2008 21:01

Also cried at lunchtime hearing KS1 rehearsing for the christmas concert-what is it about children's singing?

MrsMattie · 20/11/2008 21:02

I cried too when Sophie's aunt died, dd thought I was mad! Always and Forever, and love you forever finish me off every time . Was thinking about reading HOlly and Ivy to dd(5) in the run up to chritmas. Did your two enjoy it?

GaspodTheWonderDog · 20/11/2008 21:11

I was reading Dogger to a year one class a while ago, I got all choked up. One of the children said 'Mrs Gaspod are you (insert suitably scathing amount of 6yr old disbelief)crying?'
Me:'Ahem...no'
Scathing child:'so what's wrong with your voice'
Me 'Nothing, now sit still and listen'

Pawslikepaddington · 20/11/2008 21:13

He he, at least dd was 4 so was worried! . I bet he would have comforted his mum though in that scenario! Gosh that is a chokey book!

Gaspod - I used to do that too, with certain stories, reading to my class. Pathetic, isn't it

mabanana · 20/11/2008 21:27

"And a mother with a baby, just like him" (SOBE!)

mabanana · 20/11/2008 21:27

er, sob...

mankyscotslass · 20/11/2008 21:31

"I love you forever" always gets me crying, and DD loves it....

BibiThree · 20/11/2008 21:35

"No Matter What" - simply cannot read it. DD now knows tis a Daddy book and doesn't ask for it when I put her to bed.
