Signs in for Molesworth! Hem Hem.

There has to be a use for the Glurk Trolling, there really has.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/10/2008 08:27

My brother, who was at a slightly Custardy prep school with several teachers who looked exactly like the pics in Molesworth, did not find it funny. Whereas I, at my state primary, loved it. Work that one out.

pointygravedogger · 28/10/2008 19:56

that's interesting, kathy. I did wonder whether, for some reason, state educatied find it funnier.

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 28/10/2008 20:46

mmm, my dad was public school educated and absolutely loves Molesworth

EffiePerine · 29/10/2008 07:36

well DH was also at a public school and loves Molesworth, partly for its unswerving accuracy ('you may think I'm soft, but I'm hard. Damned hard').

I love the headmaster cariacatures: 'The crested grebes are mating!'

Bink · 29/10/2008 09:03

"Of course, the fellow doesn't realise he's a typical schoolmaster"

Kathyis6incheshigh · 29/10/2008 09:04

The parent ones are good too. 'No darling, Schopenhauer did not quite mean that.'

Bink · 29/10/2008 09:06

Kathy - did you see below? Ds chose that one to be ME.

Preen preen

filthymindedSixSixSixen · 29/10/2008 09:08

love molesworth et al. Chiz chiz and uter swot and girl have been catchphrases in our family forever.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 29/10/2008 09:09

LOL Bink, is that what you look like?

Bink · 29/10/2008 09:09

Possibly my fave character though is the granny (with the super-charged sports car too): "It is a grandmother's privilege to spoil her grandchildren GET OFF THAT SOFA NIGEL YOU WILL BRAKE IT"

Bink · 29/10/2008 09:11

hair is curlier
spex not always in place
otherwise - mm ...

Kathyis6incheshigh · 29/10/2008 09:12

Yes the granny is a fave of mine too.

'I don't care if Mrs Brodsworthy did run for Britain, I'm still going to have a cocktail.'

Bink · 29/10/2008 09:17

Oh indeed.
The "when I am old I will wear purple" thingy comes up perennially on here as your ageing role model ideal: but really, Nigel's granny is far better, no?

thumblesswitch · 29/10/2008 10:17

i was at private school and my best mate at the time was the one who introduced me to Molesworth et al - we both loved them (and St. Trinian's - we wished we had gone there instead )

Kathyis6incheshigh · 30/10/2008 10:33

Did you see the new St Trinian's film Thumbless?

thumblesswitch · 30/10/2008 10:59

not yet - I have to get it on DVD when DH isn't looking - I have all the old ones on DVD already so really it's only right I should have the full set, hmm?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 30/10/2008 11:01

Yes, you need to get the new one

It's different from the earlier ones - but there are some good performances and it's very warm-hearted and girl-power-ish.

thumblesswitch · 30/10/2008 11:18

I am definitely looking forward to seeing Rupert Everett in drag in it, that's for sure! Maybe I'll put it on my Christmas wish list...

I was surprsed by all teh drugs references in the new one. I felt rather prudish

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 05/11/2008 22:51

Noticed yesterday that Woolworths are selling the St Trinian's DVD (Rupert Everett version) v cheap. Think I might buy it.

My skool thort it was Cheltenham Ladees Colledge but relly it was St Trinian's, chiz chiz.

patriciawentworthheroine · 09/11/2008 21:20

Love molesworth's country dancing efforts(with a rilly dilly raspberry oh) - that one used to make me laugh so much I would think of it in class and let out embarrassing laughs during quiet moments.

(So clearly, I must have read molesworth while still at school - evidently my school self was more sophisticated than I imagine now, hem hem.)

fotherington tomas almost certainly went on to fame and fortune. he was good at everything (except football, hello sky, hello clouds) - even tennis, chiz chiz.

now that DD1 has started school, cannot wait to embody the school mum image. (I am still going to have a cocktail.)

I salute these books. As mothers of a certain age, we are clearly not the target demographic, yet we LOVE them.

BoccaDellaVerita · 09/11/2008 21:22

Greetings, patricia. Always good to find another kindred spirit.

Jux · 09/11/2008 21:27

I always say "hullo birds hullo sky" when I go down the garden to feed the guinea pigs. Lurve these books.
