Does anyone else get a lump in their throat (and at one reading tears in their eyes) when they get to the page 'AND SHE CAME'? It gets me every time.

I love the illustrations in Owl Babies, a pleasant change from the pastel shades in other children's books eg the barfsome Guess How Much I Love You.

Peepo is the one that has me welling up though.

halogen · 09/07/2008 22:33

'Are you my mother?' is another that always makes me well up.

CatIsSleepy · 09/07/2008 22:36

oh yes that line gives me goosebumps despite the fact that I am not that keen on the book

Peepo is lovely
Am sure dd has no idea what a hairnet is or indeed what a bucket of coal is for but she seems to like it anyway

ja9 · 09/07/2008 22:38

ok i know you've all gone off on tangents but i had to reply to op

yes yes YES - I LOVE THAT PAGE!!

seeker · 09/07/2008 22:38

If you think Owl Babies is bad, I suggest you avoid Once There were Giants and The Big Big Sea and In the Middle of the Night. That man should be arrested!

And how about that poor sad bear on the last page of Going on a Bear Hunt - he only wanted to play! I skipped that page for ages, until my foul sadistic children discovered it made me cry and made me look at it - peering into my face for tears as they did it!

halogen · 09/07/2008 22:40

Oh yes, the poor poor bear! He only wanted some friends...

I really don't like Going on a Bear Hunt. What on earth is that father playing at - totally ill-prepared, endangering the lives of his small children, no idea what to do when he actually finds the bear.

OverMyDeadBody · 09/07/2008 22:58

seeker I lurve the big big sea, but it doesn't make me well up! MW has got to be my favourite picture book author.

Now, the Runaway Bunny really is a proper tearjerker!

OverMyDeadBody · 09/07/2008 23:00

lol Birdy! I like it because he perseveres through tough times and overcomes the obstacles in his way. And he's got about four kids running around with him so it can't be easy lol

Flum · 09/07/2008 23:04

Owl babies is alright and I like the message that Mummy could be with you always but it would mean that everyone would be very hungry if she doesn't go off to get food.

My friends actually have an owl baby in their barn and it is mostly alone, the parents are so beautiful when they come back.

Who has read 'Love you forever' by Robert Munsch. Perfect give for a new Mum. about the Mom (stet) rocking her baby, toddler, child, full grown son in the night and singing the little song. When the Mom is old the full grown son picks her up, rocks her and sings to her ' I'll love you forever., I'll like you for always as long as I'm living my Mommy you'll be'

Made me blub when pregnant and soon after but once hormones settled down just thought it a bit creepy she drove across town, snuck in his house and picked up and rocked a full grown man. DDs lurve it though!

Rachmumoftwo · 09/07/2008 23:11

Has anyone read Stellaluna? It is about a baby bat that gets separated from her mother and is adopted by birds. It is a lovely book about being true to yourself, and made me sniff a bit the first few times I read it.

TheRealPhartiphukborlz · 09/07/2008 23:24

ineresting fact about male birds.
i know male blackbirds do but hadnt realised this about other birds, owls included.

TheRealPhartiphukborlz · 09/07/2008 23:26

but owls babies upset dd(2) now aged 11 - so no tears now, dont read it in fact -

TheRealPhartiphukborlz · 09/07/2008 23:29

did nto like guess how much i love you, yawn.

did love peepo though, and we're going on a bear hunt, which scared my dd3, i love the illustrations

Joolyjoolyjoo · 09/07/2008 23:31

I like the Owl babies, but I AM a sap! I also get a tear at "Oh the Places You'll Go" (kid, you'll move mountains!) My blummin father got "Goodbye Mog" ( and Mog is a favourite in our house!) out of the library for dd1 while I was pregnant- I was more upset than the kids! I've just re-read "the Velveteen Rabbit" to dd1, and that gives me a real lump in my throat.

NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2008 06:39

Baby birds are a complete PITA, they really need two parents. (Sometimes male birds do have two nests on the go, but they do their best to help with both - fewer of their chicks live, though.)

MadamAnt · 10/07/2008 08:29

The first time I read Guess How Much I Love you I was at a toddler group and had to hide the tears coursing down my face. The fact that my voice went like Beaker from the Muppets might have given me away though.

halogen · 10/07/2008 09:29

The Velveteen Rabbit makes me sob.

MissM · 10/07/2008 12:43

I didn't realise that I would end up laughing so much at this thread.

Big Nutbrown Hare's superiority complex will all come out in Little Nutbrown Hare's therapy sessions so it'll be ok in the end.

And DD always kisses the bear at the end of Bear Hunt. We told her that he was going back to his mummy.

Dogger makes me cry and Owl babies. Guess how much I love you makes me want to vomit frankly

I don't think you can object to the owls mummy going away. They don't do mouse home delivery service for owls.

hattyyellow · 10/07/2008 12:50

One of my DD's loves this book. We have it every single night - so am past the tears and onto the trying to hide it!

Is very sweet though. We are expecting DC3, so Sarah and Percy have been changed by DC1&2 to their names and they have named my bump Billy in honour of the youngest owl-to-be. Was quite tearful when they did that.

Is a great book for working mothers I agree!

hattyyellow · 10/07/2008 12:52

Guess how much I love you irritates me too. It's like the parent rabbit just can't let the baby have the last word and has to come up with something bigger and better. I want the parent to just say "wow, that much? Thank you!" rather than going for a spot of one-up-manship.

I appreciate this is probably just me. My mum and MIL both love it and actively pick it out to read to DC when they do storytime, I hide it.
