Recommendations for comic-style books for a reluctant reader

My 8 year old is a very capable but reluctant reader. Schools expectation is that they read every night and it is painful, we spend way more time arguing about it than he ever does actually reading....

He completed all the reading stages in year 1 so has been able to read books of his choice for a while now, but finding something hes actually interested in has been a challenge.

However...! He has just sat and read the entire of Dogman to me in a single sitting and has asked if I can buy the next book because he wants to read that too. My mind is blown 🤯

He said he prefers the comic book type lay out, which makes sense because he gets easily overwhelmed when there's a lot of text on a page.

I can't say from what we've read so far that I'm the biggest fan of Dogman, but I am willing to look past that if its going to encourage him to get reading.

So I'm wondering what books in a similar format your children have enjoyed, and you'd recommend please?

My DS enjoyed the Big Nate comic books by Lincoln Pearce at that age.

DS(7) is similar, he didn't love Dogman, but got on quite well with Pablo and Splash. He's also very into football and likes the "Rules" series (e.g. Haaland Rules, Bellingham Rules). We also had some luck with 5 minute stories, which are complete stories but very short - 3-6 pages of text but that's the whole story, done.

Has he read the 13 Storey Treehouse and its many sequels? My ds 7.5 loves them.

You can spend ages just looking at the detail of the pictures on a single page and they are very witty.

My son especially loves the fact that some pages don’t have many words on (eg one notable chapter is narrated by a dog and the only word to read is “bark bark bark bark bark”)

You can get the first one in colour - it’s really brilliant in colour.

I have a 7yo fan of Dogman. He also likes Bunny Vs Monkey and Supertato for shorter reads

My son loves Dogman. There are loads of Dogman books in the series so get him to work through those? There’s also the Investigsators series and Max Meow that’s comic style that my son likes that’s worth a try.

Dog Man is amazing. It has such sweet messages underneath the crazy. My son loves Donut Squad and Bunny vs Monkey.

My ds is 8, and he started on dogman and captain underpants, and now he reads loads and loads. His other faves are - Bunny v monkey. The investigators. Cat kid comic club. Pablo and splash. Detective beans. The first cat in space ate pizza. Megalomaniacs. Donut squad. Asterix. We also signed him up to the phoenix comic, which he reads cover to cover every week.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I will investigate these further and see what might appeal to him and then try and balance out my love of buying crisp new books vs using the local library 😆
