Isn't "Peepo" by the Ahlbergs just the loveliest book?

DD3 (20 months) absolutely loves this at the moment and has it as her bedtime story every night.

I don't mind because I adore it too

Just found this thread after reading Peepo to DD tonight. She loves it, leaves it for ages then suddenly asks for it out of the blue. Some of her first words were 'She wants him on her knee'. I always get a lump in my throat with the dad in uniform as well. I met Alan Ahlberg a long time ago soon after his wife (Janet) had died, and he was the loveliest, gentlest kindest man. I felt honoured being in the same room as him.
