The DFC

It's being promoted by the Story Museum in Oxford (which isn't an actual museum yet)

If you subscribe you can try 4 issues free first. (It's over £2 a copy though, is that a lot?)

Roisin, I missed this thread when wendy started it but have now signed up thanks to your bump
It looks superb, Aquila-type ethos and production values...but slightly more fun
I know ds will love this

NQC would love this too - she is a graphic art connoisseur (am reading Persepolis at the moment)

MrsWeasley · 23/07/2008 20:11

I looked into this when it was first being issued and my initial thoughts were £49 for 6 months was a lot, weekly is too frequent for us (if you have a busy week or busy 2 weeks you end up with a backlog and it becomes a chore!) also and most importantly for me was that my children dont like comic style books.

roisin · 23/07/2008 20:33

MrsWeasley · 23/07/2008 20:42

I should say that £49 isnt a lot if your children would read it.

I'm quite bemused that the boys like comics tbh. I'm not a visual person at all, and with comics I tend to just read the speech bubbles and barely glance at the pictures, and that just doesn't work. You need to look at the pictures quite closely to be able to understand what's going on.

They're obviously more multi-talented than me

pointydog · 23/07/2008 20:57

I think this is aimed very well at girls as well as boys. Female characters in some stories, animals. It looks good.

However, I think all comics and mags are over-riced. Can't help it.

roisin · 01/08/2008 12:06

Has anyone started getting this recently? What do you think of it?
Today ds2 asked, "What day is it?"
When I told him he said: "Yippee, it's DFC day today!" Then, as usual, they started discussing/negotiating over who would get to read it first

mymblemummy · 16/08/2008 00:48

We subscribed to this after seeing the thread, and it is a massive hit with our 10-year-old bookworm daughter.

The Pullman story is her favourite, but she enjoys all of it and is very pleased at not having space wasted on "boring ads".

We are now contemplating getting it as a present for our book-hating nephew.

sinkingfast · 31/08/2008 12:28

This looks great, will give it a go.

Thanks for that - and it's really like a Blue Peter annual?

thanks#

just ordered one for ds1 though may be too old for him

roisin · 29/11/2008 10:08

You're welcome! I hope he enjoys it.

clare21 · 01/12/2008 20:06

I bought one for my 9 year old nephew when it first come out, and his parents have renewed the subscription. He's not at all into books, much more into computer & TV stuff, and yet there's something about the DFC that has captured him. He's even made a rota amongst his friends to read it after him. He loves the fact it's weekly so he doesn't have to wait long for the next installment. I always liked stuff that came through the letter box 'just for me' and I suppose that's what this is doing.

FestiveGardenia · 08/12/2008 16:39

I am thinking of getting this for my ds, he's 10. Can anyone tell me if it will matter if he's missed the first 6 months? I mean, are they continuing instalments which will make no sense if someone comes to them for the first time?

I presume the extra expense is because there is no advertising.

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/12/2008 01:54

No, I don't think missing the first six months will make any difference. They do a 'story so far' bit for long-running serials and they seem to start new serials very frequently.

My daughter was very peeved when the last issue arrived on Saturday instead of finding it waiting for her when she got home from school on Friday.
