Trying to steer 8-year-old son away from Bunny vs Monkey which makes him HOWL with laughter. Would like that in a novel. He loves them but needs to work on his fiction prose, apparently.

Tried wimpy kid, treehouse stories, Ronald Dahl....

Any recommendations?

What about the Fudge series of book a by Judy Bloom? My son loved it at that age. I loved it at school when our class teacher read it to us. So funny, even now

Just be aware Superfudge totally mashes the concept of Santa!

The Just William books are funny but hard to read as they have his dialect, if that's the word I mean - lots of ''bout' rather than 'about' ect. The audiobooks read by Martin Jarvis are fantastic though!

Not exactly 'laugh out loud' but the Jeremy James books are humorous! I loved them at that age.

My dad read Just William by Richmal Crompton to me at that age. I adored it. My dd loved it too. If you find it in a library worth a try!

Came her to suggest this. If he doesn't mind older books, these are sure to be a winner!

David Baddiels books, they are all stand alone but great.

Clearly someone promoting their own self-published book!

ThornyThing · 15/11/2024 12:04

Hope it's better than their promotion!

It is not. very basic spelling errors on the first page of the sample. Looks like it was written by the same age-group it's targeting!

Oh my goodness. I remember my dad reading this to us. It made a long train journey from Scotland to the south of England in the 80s great! Happy memories. Thank you.
